I am getting unplayable network lag in all my games despite a good ping

This is strange but in only Natural selection 2, I am having massive problems. It is impossible for me to join a game without network related stuttering. I can have a great ping of 45, but once I'm in the game, every 7-10 seconds the action stutters and rewinds a bit (network lag, not frames per second lag).

When I first bought it during Winter sale it worked perfectly and was really fun. I haven't touched it in a month or more (was busy, not the game's fault), but now it doesn't work.

I have a Thomson router and am using a wifi stick.

Chivalry works fantastically online, and borderlands 2 works ok as well. I must admit that when trying Black Ops 2 this previous weekend, I had massive ping and it was stuttering terribly (unplayable).

Help?

Check to make sure vsync is turned off, and refer to http://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/127592/good-fps-but-micro-freezing-sometimes/p1 and see if there is anything there that may be able to help you out.

Thanks so much for the swift reply! Vsync is off sadly. I just noticed it patched just now. I guess it would be prudent to try it with the new patch before I seek any other resolutions.

    Help?

    Have you tried it hard-wired?

Wifi always produced stuttering for me. You should try it with lan first.

Most 20+ player servers will lag by default. Try on 16 player servers or smaller to test it out.

    Hey guys,

I'm not sure what "hard-wired" means when referring to the router.

I would love to try a direct connection with a cable, but that is only possible when I bring my PC out to the living room and plug it into the TV, since that is where the router actually is. It would be an interesting test to see how it responds though. I do have to say that other Unreal Engine games (well they kinda of all are nowadays haha) work great on my wifi stick, especialy Chivalry. It used to have massive problems as well, but with recent patches somewhere down the line (I only play games about 6 hours a week at most so I may not touch a game for months) it became completely perfect in that regard.

    Stardog,
But my ping is great and nobody else is lagging.

Most important point: I tried it with the new patch yesterday for 15 minutes. First of all every time I turn on the game the first time, the menu doesn't load my steam avatar into the picture box for it. When I join a game, it takes years (prechaching is snail slow), and ultimately fails. So I usually turn on the game, turn it off, and turn it back on. My avatar is there the second time around and now I can try and join games.

    Yesterday's result:
All joining takes a long time, always has. First game I joined, but got a red plug in the waiting room even though the server showed great ping in the server list. I quit, tried another game. The server browser loads games pretty slowly. The second game worked! No stutter!

So the conclusion regarding the path is that at least on some servers I may be able to play with no problems. I don't know what to do about the red plug problem during the first server.

(Question about the game, when I run out of ammo, how can I buy more? I would always have to get a shotgun at the gun store, but don't know how to simply replenish ammo. I think there is an ammo request button, but the commanders have never headed my requests)

I just had this on a server too, constant red or yellow plug, even though my connection is fine. And not everyone else was having it from what I could tell. I then proceeded to have authentication and waiting on server problems trying to join other servers... :/

This is exactly what I meant by "hard-wired". Plug your computer directly into your router with a network cable and try it out.

I know there have been reports by others have issues that turned out to be a problem with their router even though other games worked fine.

I've noticed a lot of servers running with a tickrate of 5-10, when it should be a constant 30. That causes lag similar to what you guys are talking about. Frequent red/yellow plugs, and lots of rubberbanding.

Problem is tho ritual, he is not alone. 2 of my friends have the same issue as well after the update me included, playing on the same bunch of servers we've always played on. 16-20 slot servers, some with mods, some completely clean, but just about all of them have the strange roll-back thing. Like there is no apparent lag or problems, then suddenly you jump back 1-2 secs, then everything from half a minute to never before it happens again. All the servers were fine before the patch with no lag(ish). I'll see if at least one of us can get it captured with loadtimes true.

So I tried to game twice since update. I described the first experience (First game was red plug, had to quit, second game was fine), and the second time I plugged my pc into my TV and had a direct connection to the router. That was perfect, no lag that I could notice, although it seems I am awful and can't hit any of the aliens (I did kill about 4-5, but died a thousand times), especially the flying ones. When I first got the game I felt like I was actually killing aliens here and there. But like I said, I had great ping and no lag that I could see, so I guess I just suck.
