And lack of ops.
There seems to be a problem with the IRC channel, it is getting more and more like they sterotypical Cs channel every week, but moreso this week with the unfortunate problems Comprox is having. There is never an Op when you need one, and I for one are getting pretty annoyed.

For example, we have jsut had one induividual come on. He proceded to say a racist comment, then when we asked him to refrain he became totally defensive and rude. "I don't know any of you so I don't care" was one his the comments that involves no swear-filter or 6yr old mindset to work out.

Please, do something about it, im sure quite a few people will agree. An admin is not needed 99.9% of the time, but the 0.1% when they are is causing a lot of grief.

<edit> I forgot Chanserv, but hes more the strong silent type </edit>

This is partially my fault. But you people have some blame in it as well. I was idling in the IRC channel, just reading what went past when certain people start talking about stereo types. How "goths are this" and "jocks are this." It annoyed me greatly, so I tabbed over to another IRC channel for awhile. At a point I mentioned the conversation in #naturalselection and how much it irritated me, so a friend of mine went over to have some fun.

None of this wouldn't have happened if certain other people didn't provoke him into it.

The moral, don't blame outsiders for shedding the light on internal problems.

If it will make you feel better i shall write it in plain english:

"And bake some pie."

Thanks.

Plain english is usually best, especially in a thread that has the potential of getting enough fighting going to get accounts locked... that is, if anyone decides to come on here and try to 'defend' themselves by insulting people.

Im just calling attention to a problem, naming no names. Its just people got annoyed as things escalted out of hand, and as Im rather partial to the channel now, Id hate to see anything happen to it.

Yes sir i understand completely, heaven forbid you'd lock my account :-(
• MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
I don't even know who you are. Why would I lock your account? Haven't given me much of a reason yet.

I don't hang out on IRC, so I don't know who was involved, or what all went on. I'm just here to make sure that no one goes and starts causing trouble.

Ok, just to drag this back on topic...perhaps what we need is some of the older regulars to be made OPs? A fresh batch would probably help matters.
• The_FoolThe_Fool Join Date: 2002-04-08 Member: 386Members
Just making a lot of ops is never a good solution. Just because someone has been around for a while doesn't mean that they can handle being an op.

Idealy, you just want 1 or 2 ops for each major time block. And usually the IRC channel is fine op wise.
• MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
Well no, a ton of ops is never good, and of course you shouldn't make idiots ops.. but as far as I know (and this is only from my very rare visits) there haven't been new ops since I first saw NS.

If you do decide on more ops, they'd have to know a lot about IRC, right?

There's actually one IRC channel I frequent in which nearly every user is an op. It's pretty funny. (:
• pagpag Join Date: 2002-04-14 Member: 440Members
I'd gladly be an op.
• SmokeMastaSmokeMasta Join Date: 2002-04-13 Member: 430Members
the only op that's 24/7 online is comprox but he is most of the time not behind his pc

Before everyone starts asking to be an Op you need to be trusted by the NS team. People like Greedo, Rhoads, Relic (if he isnt already oped), Narby will be the ones oped. Not me, not the person who just signed up on the fourms.

I always sound mean, but I rarly am.

I'm rarely on IRC, but if I had been when this occurred, I would have kick-banned the offender. I will not tolerate racism, sexism, attacks based on sexual orientation, or attacks on religion (or lack of it). If there is a problem with an individual when on Op isn't present, please feel free to e-mail me about it, and I will look into the matter or let someone else know. You can remain anonymous if you want.

That also goes for myself and Flayra. I have no intention of letting IRC get out of control anymore than these forums...

Yeah, me too! I woulda kicked their butts straight to --

wait, I'm not an op... yet .

mostly the channel is just fine, just on 1 occasion things got a bit out of hand, but most of the time this isn't a problem cuz there's an active op, but I have to agree sometimes there's noone else but compy, and he's mostly afk, well at least when I'm on

I've noticed the channel degenerating myself lately. I'm going to be idling there more often. Like many of you know, I work 3 on 3 off nightshift, so I'll be sure to hang around more often to cover nighsthift 'op'erations. /me dies laughing.

As it is right now, there is a dangerous lack of ops at certain times. I know I was there when this whole incident started, and it wasn't very pretty. Regardless of whether the person says "it was a joke" or not, it should never have happened in the first place.

I know MonsE was talking about adding another op (maybe more) on Friday, but he hasn't done anything yet.

LOL

Hi pag ... should have known it was you ... some how, I'm not supprised ...

Regardless, the chanel has been getting pretty ...bad. Everyday it seems to get a little worse. I will not mention names, but even one or two of the people who said they wouldnt mind being ops are somewhat responsible as well.

I, like Spyder, see myself idling in NS more and more now. I've seen blantant disregard for the rules - even when there is an op there. It seems to be a little better later in the night where I'm at (12pm-ish pst), but I just assume thats from all the "little ones" being in bed/school.

People I certainly wouldnt mind being an op:
Greedo
Ken
Roadskin
TheFool
Wurm
Wazz
Fam
Mu_
Hikuso

I'm sure there are a few more, but they escape me at the moment.

Hmm That sounds like a very good idea!

It would be good if there was a long-term forum bum that lived in a different timezone to most of the other ops and would be able to keep a occasional eye out for nasty radicals when the other ops are getting their beauty (or ugly in some cases I'm sure) sleep.

Now.. that a bit of a puzzler! Who fits that description I wonder?

Forums != IRC, so it makes no sense for someone that's been on the forums a lot to be an op in IRC.

It's better to choose someone that spends a fair amount of time in the IRC channel.
• MartMart Origin of SUYF Join Date: 2002-02-26 Member: 248Members
Yes but theres a difference between spending time in the chat and actually paying attention to whats being said.
• MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
Well, if a moderator became an OP, he could actually go in and moderate when something was going on that was bad enough that someone had to go and post on the forums about it...

And the moderators on the board have probably already proven that they're not l4m3rz or n00bs or anything... so it would make sense.

why not add a feature to call an op? when you mail to opmail@rr.org all ops get a message that they are wanted... then they come in and kickban the ... no words for it.

Umm: Mart: I agree with you totally. There are plenty of people I've seen idling in that channel that I couldn't pick out of a lineup. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of the recent flame-wars going on. The only time I've had to kick was Jedisar for my personal amusement.
