Game freezes when I hit ESC

Hi. I'm having a little issue here. When I connect to a server and hit ESC for the first time the game freezes for a few seconds and resumes. It does the same thing when I disconnect from a server too. It's not a big deal but is there a way to fix this? Same thing happens when I disconnect from a server while playing TF2 so I'm not sure if it's related to NS2. Could it be the AV software?

I believe this happens to everyone. Don't think there's a fix, as it isn't much of a priority.

I noticed the same thing, but never put much thought into it. If many run into this, perhaps it's worth a bug report.

Are you talking about the pause before the game menus come up? That's because when you start the game your OS is moving the menu files out of cache/RAM and into the pagefile, then when you hit escape it takes a while to load up the necessary files again. There's usually a pause with this simply because the game is only doing one thing at once, and it has to wait for the menu to load before it can go on to the next thing. I believe that optimization of this is low priority because nobody really cares about whether or not the game is updating in the background when they're in the menu anyway.

Hmm so by that logic if I disable pagefile this pause will be gone (using an SSD). I'll give it a shot and update you guys.

It's due to the lua menu being initialized.

Loading the menu to the ram while we're connecting to a game might fix this. I'm not sure though. Coders would know better.

Its annoying because I sometimes press esc to get out of various in-game menus. If I accidentally press it twice, it pulls up the menu and freezes (for 2-6 seconds).

I've noticed fps drops after the first escape hitting, right until a map change or my rage quitting.

I just use the console to quit or disconnect from a server. Opens instantly.

Lol, I thought i was the only one that typed "quit" and "disconnect" instead of using the menu.

Yeah I get this as well. I have also noticed a fps drop between 5-7 after hitting escape the first time.

Interesting, if it kills fps, maybe it should be unloaded every time it's closed, sure it'd lag every time you pressed escape, but you shouldn't press it often in a game, and hey w/e helps people with fps problems.

I think it's odd that there'd be an fps drop if it's only loading a menu and storing it in RAM. How much RAM do you all have? (Can you fit the whole game into RAM or are you paging some files?)

8GB RAM here.
