Matchmaking + Ranking

What is common among all popular games? SC2, LoL, WOW (pvp), GW2(pvp), Halo, CoD?
All of them have matchmaking service, rankings/level.
I understand those are all much bigger games with alot more resources, but imagine NS2 with those feature. It would increase the player base exponentially. I feel one of the major problems with no matchmaking is that often the team is unbalanced. I am sure everyone experience games where 1 guy is killing half of the team. That takes away the fun for bothside. Ranking would be good because 1. people LOVE ranks. 2. help with team balance.
This may require unknownworlds to shell out some of their own servers, but I think it will be well worth it in the end. (The private owned server system we have right now is really really old school).
