Unable to join modded servers

ChalarieChalarie Join Date: 2012-05-03 Member: 151459Members
I am hoping you guys would be able to help me out. I am assuming this is just a problem on my end because I don't hear about it anywhere else.

When joining a modded server, I am disconnected while loading because I am 'Missing Required Mod'. As I understood, the way steam workshop works, is if you join a modded server you will automatically download the required mods needed to play. This should work with maps, gamemodes, etc. I have been having this problem for a while now, and it is really bugging me. I have tried downloading the mods needed to play, but in most cases I can't figure out all the mods the server wants me to have, so i can't connect.

Is anybody else having this problem? Does anybody know of a solution?

I haven't encountered this issue, but the first thing I would try is deleting all of your mods. It could be that one is causing a conflict or not updating correctly. To do this, open Windows Explorer, and in the location bar type the following:

    %appdata%\Natural Selection 2\Workshop

Delete all of the folders here, then restart NS2.

As a general rule, If an update is released, disable your mods and don't join modded servers. The mod creators will probably need time to update their mods to be compatible with the new build. I would guess your issue may be related to this. Can you name the server/mod?

If you are erroring "Missing Required Mod", just keep rejoining. It'll eventually catch for no apparent reason

I have tried that, but to no avail. I just tried again, and now my server list seems to be reverted to some earlier version without the update button or favorites filter. The console says menu mounted version build 228. I only have two mods active, a crosshair mod and colored minimap players.

In the console all of the downloads ended in an error code 16.

This is an issue I have been having for a while now, and is not build specific. I cannot pinpoint exactly when it started, but it was sometime around release perhaps. It isn't server or mod specific either, I have not been able to join any modded server. The only modded server I have been able to join is a Sanity Mod playtest, where the only mod needed was the one I had downloaded.

Look at what mods its downloading in the console. Subscribe to them on steam and activate them manually ingame.

Yes, that is a solution. But I am looking for a fix, because this isn't supposed to be happening.

Yes, for some reason the mod just fails to download sometimes, try again.

This is the faster way since it's guaranteed to work first time.

I guess I should clarify: This happens every time I join a modded server. It isn't a matter of 'Try again' because it doesn't work. Ever.

    Are you sure?

For me it can take up to 3-4 retries.

    What servers?

KKG for example runs extended consistency checking. I had this same problem, but simply downloading the mod from the workshop instead of in game fixed it.

    <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse?searchtext=extended+consistency&childpublishedfileid=0&section=items&appid=4920&browsesort=trend" target="_blank">http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse?...rowsesort=trend</a>

(add all of these, wait for steam browser to download -- restart steam if necessary)

I see you can't read, I'll say it again hopefully you know how to now. Trying again does work, "SOMETIMES", and you can always go to the workshop and subscribe to the mod manually. Like i said already, that way is guaranteed to work.

Downloading larger sized mods from servers doesn't work for me either. Opening console and downloading the mods manually from the workshop is really the only solution.

The problem is, you don't download the mod from the server anymore =/ That's in the past sadly, now the server is meant to make your client squire it directly from the steam workshop, and it fails to do that.

Just wanted to add that I'm getting the same behavior. I've done quite a bit of experimenting. Not solved the issue, but thought I'd share my experience so far:

I know I started getting the "error code 16" failures sometime <i>after</i> the first official patch, as I remember successfully downloading NS2Stats. I'm not sure if the failures started at a patch, or if something else changed.

Subscribing to the mods manually is a workaround, but is horribly cumbersome. I did find something weird though: I attempted to join a server with several mods installed and got the error code 16 failures. I then tried subscribing to only one of these mods, then restarted NS2 and reconnected to the same server - the rest of the mods were successfully downloaded from within NS2! However, the next time I tried joining a server with a mod I didn't have already, error code 16.

I also tried unsubscribing all my installed mods and manually deleting the Workshop files (as was suggested earlier). Same effect as if installing only one mod manually - the first server I connected to the downloads went fine, then it stopped working.

I have no ideas on how to continue fault tracing this...

^You don't have to download them from steam. After you try to join the server once and fail, go to the mods page ingame and turn the new mods it just tried to download to 'Active'. Then try to join again and it will download them and join the server.

Seems like it's just not letting you join servers running mods you have set to 'Inactive' atm, which all mods default to.

Just tried this and although the mod did turn up as "Inactive" in the Mods menu, activating it and retrying connection to server does <i>not</i> work for me - still error code 16. In the list, the mod was also listed as "Unavailable", not sure if that is relevant somehow. Restarting NS2 makes the mod disappear from the list, so no luck there either.

Noticed something just now as well - the Steam overlay isn't working for me. Nothing happens when pressing Shift-Tab. Could this be related somehow?
