Lasers Suck!

Yes they do
There are several servers out there that use a mod that makes every marine emit a nice red laser. This is of course very nice for the aliens: you wouldn't want to be surprised by a marine would you? As a marine, playing on those servers can be hell; the aliens instantly know where you are. It is like constant parasite always stuck on you.

It gets worse; not only do aliens know where you are, they know where you are pointing. So, forget guarding doors; skulks will see a nice shiny laser to warn them that they may be fired upon.

Now, you may say that this is no big deal and those servers can be easily avoided. This is true. However, currently many of the beta servers *cough* lanvancouver *cough* insist on using this annoying mod. This robs us of the opportunity to test out the patch without interfrence from the admins.

My objections are as follows:

1. If marines have lasers pointing from their guns, skulks whould have lasers pointing from their mouth.

2. Admins should not try to "balance" the game with any mods. These choices fall on the dev team.

3. Any such mods interfere with the testing of new patches; As a beta test server, it is the server's admin's responsibility to keep the server free from any outside factors that might interfere with the testing.

4. If the admins thought that it would be "cool" to add lasers, I assure you that it is not and at the very least we should have an option to turn our laser off so no-one sees it. There is nothing cool about a lagged out laser that gives away your position.

5. Lasers Suck!

Constructive comments welcome...

well the lasers were supposed to help marines aim, not tell the aliens where they are. the lasers should just show a red dot wherever the marines are going to hit instead of a long beam extending from the gun to the target. if all the aliens saw was a dot, it wouldn't be so bad and it would be the way lasers work in real life; unless of course you're in a steam filled room

    I don't need a dot; I have crosshairs.

I played on a 1.04 server for an afternoon, one that had lasers. As digicrab said, it's almost a permanent parasite. Not cool when playing a marine; a skulk's best friend when playing for the Kharaa.

its pointless. it looks "cool" for five minutes and ruins the rest of the game for you.

at least in HLDM you could turn OFF the rocket launcher's sighting dot to hide it from people

the laser make it cool and more realistic, but yeah, you give away your position. i want a red dot, not a stream red line.

HA! If you pivot more than 10%, the laser starts to drag behind. Besides, that's what the damn crosshair is for.

I posted about this on general. This may be a "marine bonus," but I'm heavily inclined to lean toward the thought that these lasers were meant to benefit aliens. Logically, no, it's not about aiming. As a previous poster with a little more common sense than the previous 4 remarked, marines have crosshairs. No, there is no difference between crosshairs and a laser. Also, I have an excellent connection, ideally 30-40, however, the laser is always about 1-2 feet away from my crosshair at all times when I'm moving.

So what's it good for? Maybe if I'm holding it still? But wait! If I'm camping and holding it still, aliens will see the beam a mile away. Use your common sense.

i didn't say a laser AND a crosshair. i meant just a laser dot, which is more accurate than a crosshair. besides we are talking about having lasers in the first place so if they are gonna give us one it should be implemented in a way that helps marines, not hurt them. long laser lines hurt. dots would be better. i hate having to point my gun down and obscure my view just cuz i dont wanna give away my position.

As much as people here seem to blame Voogru for everything bad about NS mods, targeting lasers have nothing to do with him. In this case you need to talk to the NS dev team since they were going to be part of the game, and you need to talk to the admins of servers that run a mod that uses them. None of those people are Voogru.

I happen to like Voogru's mods, and his servers usually have at least one admin on them twenty four hours a day. I wasn't a big fan of the rocket launchers, but he took them out.

I played on one mod which had a command to turn the laser off.... but it was only clientside!!

Apparently, according ot the MOTD, the lasers were added "for balance reasons". In actuality, I find the lasers pretty much are there to screw the marines over big time.

I can't see any reason why the lasers are even in the game (they don't help your aim at all) except to alert any aliens who might be in the neighborhood that a marine will shoot them if they go around a corner.

These lasers actually go through WALLS, alerting aliens to your exact position before they can even see you.

Any of youse seen the NS trailer? The marines at the start had laser.
  • FleshRenderFleshRender Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5928Members
Wow, I thought that the "balance issues" would be pretty obvious to everyone but I spose it isn't, so here goes. Marines are NOT skulks!!@!$# You are not supposed to be sneaky! The aliens are supposed to know where your soft juicy behind is at all times because they are sneaky predators and YOU ARE NOT. Don't whine about "oh no, now the kharaa know where I am and I can't go ramboing anymore because they can SEE ME" no duh man, YOU ARE A LOUD OBNOXIOUS MARINE.

Lazers keep marines where they are supposed to be, NON-sneaky NON-ramboing TEAM PLAYERS. I can't believe all you guys are crying because the aliens can actually SEE you now. SUCK IT UP SOLDIER AND FROM A SQUAD SO YOUR BUDDY CAN WATCH YOU BACK NOW MOOOOOOVE OUT!

While admins have the authority to run their server as they please, this does not give them the right to "balance" the game as they please.

Flayra and team have the final say on such things. If they wanted the admins' help to balance the game, they wouldn't have made all game values hardcoded.

And NO, I dont see that I am a loud marine. I am a silent super trained black ops invisible killer! All I need is black armor and a mask!

I shouldn't spend my time worrying about where I am pointing my gun. Also, in case you don't realise, no alien in their right mind will jump into one of those red beams. This reduces my effectiveness as a guard.

I dont know about the rest of you, but once 1.04 goes official, I'm staying the hell away from the laser servers. I haven't seen one good comment about them either...
  • CatgirlCatgirl Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5741Members
Uhm...if you're holding still, you should be silent and unnoticable. That's why you're staying still.

Marines don't have loud "idle" noises like the Aliens do, so being able to tell where their position is when they're unmoving obviously wasn't part of the balance for them, like it was for Aliens.

as FleshRender said the marines are supposed to work as a team. the aliens would already know that theres a large group of marines there and if they rushed in they would probably die. if you decide to go rambo and start running off all alone then you deserve to die anyway and the laser just makes it all the more easier to kill you.

also the server host is allowed to do as he pleases, they are allowed to run whatever mod they please. don't like it don't goto it, or start running your own server. don't start saying that you hate it and such cuz a lot of people probably DONT CARE.

I don't like the lasers either. You have a crosshair, that's all I need. Plus, like you guys have said, lasers don't work that way unless there's steam or something in the way.
  • SirusSirus Join Date: 2002-11-13 Member: 8466Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
umm, The point isnt to make the marines position to be obvious. Anyways, Marines ARE supposed to be sneaky. That's where the strategy comes in too. Secretly building and such. No they arent supposed to cloak or anything to that degree, but they are supposed to be covert.
  • GeronimoGeronimo Join Date: 2002-12-18 Member: 11056Members
    Heres my 200 cents:

to make the laser useful, we need to make the crosshair less useful

Make it bigger, with less accuracy, or remove it in total, that requires more skill, and give the laser upgrade a use

also, it should only be a dot, not a line...that gotta suck hard...like a skinhack(spikes going out from them, so you see them everywhere, kinda like wallhack)

to add to this, make the game darker(ALOT) and make the flashlight an uppgrade, with more and more light into it, the more it upgrades(I like steam to, it keeps the whole feeling up)

this makes the adv hivesight more useful and increases the fear effect
  • ArchzaiArchzai Join Date: 2002-11-10 Member: 8007Members
ok.. lasers.. i think if people REALLY want it.. it should only be for the marines to see...

    cuz

    a) marines make A LOT OF NOISE running
    b) even when marines walk.. they make a clanking noise

jus wondering.. is the marine laser a straight beam or jus a dot that keeps moving everywhere? thx

The laser beams look pretty cool, and the servers I've been on with this feature, the admin says its for balancing issues.

Like someone else said if you don't like it, don't play on a server that has it. Vote with your feet!

btw a quicktoggle (knife/lmg) is the solution for the marines...:-)

I just made it a point to aim my gun at a nearby wall and do all my moving by strafing. It sucked. But I could remain stealthy.
Probably why I don't play laser servers at all. NG's good enough.

lasers suck ! they really do !
i think it's a SHAME that admins put this mod on the TEST-SERVERS for 1.04!!
I encountered a lot of people who belived it was actually part of NS!!

I prefer to play on servers with mp_constancy activated and no other Server sided mods... pure ns!
(Ok, i think mapvote mods are quite usefull, but the do not effect the gameplay in any way)

Should anyone not yet have noticed, there is a thread in the (appropriate) General forum where exactely this topic is discussed.

Plus, here as there, don't bash mods - if you dislike them, use another server.
