Mic Problem

Ok I posted this in the troubleshooting area but got no response. When I try to speak in game nobody hears me, I mean nobody even sees that my mic is broadcasting. It's not the game, it works just fine in other games. I don't think it's the bindings either because it doesn't work with default, nor does it work with any bindings. Hopefully someone here can help, I like to comm, but it's hard to do with no mic.

    What do you mean with "nobody even sees that my mic is broadcasting". Because if that is the issue, your voicechat key isn't working. Have a look at the options menu to see if you've got a key set for voice communication. Other then that, if the other player in the server don't hear you (but do actually see the mic broadcasting text), I'd say it is the +20dB setting.

    NS2 has a very low volume for the voicechat currently, they are going to rework this when there is time. But if you are indeed lacking that +20dB setting, I can imagine it is inaudible... Heck it is already hard to hear with it ticked on.

    What notification are you getting that it is broadcasting?

    You only have 1 mic plugged in right? Sometimes an attached webcam might have a mic on it for example.

    Yes, it's actually a Playstation eye. I get my name popping up on the left side of the screen.

    It's the only mic plugged in and works with every other game.

    This was happening to me for the longest time, accidentally fixed my problem yesterday. I'm not sure if its exactly the same as yours, but I'll run through my situation:

    I have a USB microphone, which Natural Selection 2 simply didn't recognize (but skype and every other game I own did), I have a 5.1 series of Logitech speakers, and I have an audio manager called RealTek HD. When I installed my 5.1 speakers, I screwed up where my side speakers were coming into, so my computer thought they were rear speakers and required me to use a 7.1 speaker system set up with the side speakers turned off (cause that connection went nowhere). While this set up worked generally, every once in a while I would have to reset the audio system of a game or movie because it was being screwy. So last night I was playing with my audio inputs and found a way to fix where my side speakers were coming into. This allowed me to switch back to a 5.1 speaker system, and out of curiosity I tried my microphone again - works perfectly, people are able to hear my clearly.

    While I realize this sounds a bit jumbled, but essentially I'd suggest making sure your basic audio set up doesn't have any strange hiccups in it similar to what I described. You also might try to set your window's audio to 5.1 speakers to see if that does anything.

    Same issue. From my research it seems USB mics don't work. If you have a nonusb mic try that and see if that works.

    I sadly only have a USB mic, it should work in the game but it just isn't. Have yet to figure out why.

    EDIT: After realizing there are more posts under the first post.

    I'll try unplugging my Line-In from my synth to see if the mic will work now. But otherwise I'm using a PS3 eye as well.

    EDIT: That didn't work. I Suppose I'll try changing my 7.1 Surround sound to 5.1 just to try that as well.

    EDIT: That didn't work either. I have confirmation that people aren't even seeing my broadcast notification tag, but I see it every time I hit my mic button. Verifying integrity atm.

    Are you using a Creative X-Fi soundcard?
    When I installed this card for the 1st time under Win7-64bit, I let Windows search for the correct drivers, and it came up with a version that had an incomplete control-panel, with no settings or menu for microphone.
    I'm also using an usb-mic (from Logitech).

    Then I did a search for some beta-drivers, and found <a href="http://ccfiles.creative.com/manualdn/Drivers/AVP/12101/0x2EA3E53B/SBXF_PCDRVBETA_US_2_18_0015A.exe" target="_blank">these</a> (click for download).
    These worked for me, and fixed my mic-problems...I now have a complete Creative control-panel.
    The driver-set may be outdated by now (it's a few months old), but it's the one I'm still using.

    if youre using usb mics you gotta set the default sound for recording in windows otherwise it wont work. other games pick up the mic auto but ns2 doesnt.

    A lot of programs need the mic to be set to the default recording device in Windows. It's something everyone should be setting anyway.

    I don't understand where this usb mic problem is coming from... I use a usb mic and have had no problem.

    On another note... if your name is appearing on the right side of the screen then they can see you trying to broadcast. They probably just can't hear you at all... My guess would be to check your mic settings in and out of game like others have suggested. best of luck

    Works fine with USB mics I used one for a long time, just need to set it as the default communications device and you're set.

    this is correct, I use a usb web cam for my mic and this was the fix.

    It just doesn't work in NS2. All other games work fine under the current settings except NS2. Now I've heard people say to adjust the dB for the mic but the PS3 Eye USB cam you can't. Its stuck there at zero, but that doesn't effect my volume over other games. People all hear me fine over steam chat, skype or any source MP game for that matter.

    The game is either bugged or windows needs a fix. My creative driver are at the latest. I'll try the other drivers thrown up on here see if that helps.

    that pic looks like you have the mic turned all the way down and using the mic on your webcam. is that correct? but reading your post leads me to believe that yea, you need other drivers, what model/maker is the webcam/mic thing

    honestly you can get a pretty dirt cheap mic from any store, but yea, drivers

    That default device is the PS3 Eye (AKA a Webcam). Its using the latest CL-Eye Driver and works in every game flawlessly and with great quality except it fails to work at all in NS2. And no, I'm not going to go buy some crappy mic when I have one that already works perfectly in all other games I play. Its a simple software issues that if I can't fix myself needs to be patched in.
