"half Lifes Had Its Day"

DefconDefcon Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9402Members
I heard several people say "half lifes had its day" and "half life is dying"...

Then i point them to www.gamespy.com/stats

The fact, the half life community at a constant, if not grows.

(Rough figures based on a 24 hour/weekly estimate)
Now take, MOH:AA, 6% of half lifes community
Battlefield 1942, 5.5%
Q3:Arena, 5.5%

These new games, might have the graphics, but they sure as hell aint got the feel half life has. I don't think any game in the forseeable future will.

Agree? Disagree?

Emphasis on FIRST. They got a huge jump on the market with counter strike. And now that the engine is so old, many people with low end systems are enjoying it.

The fact of the matter is that the engine is terribly showing its age. And its only oging to get worse. But your never trully going to see the end of halflife, its user base is just too large.

    The engine is constant

it doesn't get worse, only new engines get better, it may be worse compared to say, UT3k but dude, HL was made like, 5 years ago, what'd u expect?

If a game can last 5 years and still have such a strong player base, then they deserve every dollar they get from the game

Ok, so HL doesn't have *quoting Uranium 235 in his NS to UT2k3 post* "Orgasmic" graphics.

    So?

It still makes a heck of a lot better gameplay then some. I tried to play Q3. It got boring when I realized it has no true depth.

HL might be old, but you can make it high-poly models. It still looks better then some of the new games out on the market.

Half-Life has an excellent engine and you can tell that the developers really fell in love while making this game, because it's so in-depth. I never got really far in single-player, but I plan on trying it sometime.

Well it's the MODs that make HL great, HL itself is pretty crap... I don't really know what all the fuss was about, it never was a that great single player game. I liked Unreal better than HL.

HL has this long unbarable train ride before you can do anything, after that you have to run around this research complex for maybe more than 15 minutes before you get to shoot anything.

HL sucks, HL mods rule. If it was not for the mods HL would have died ages ago.

Half-Life was THE first game to have interactive characters. That played a HUGE part.

-No longer were the levels only filled with enemies, you had scientists and guards walking about naturally.
-You could make a bit of conversation with NPCs (only a little, but more then any game back then).
-It had a kickin conspiracy story, the G-Man, Aliens, Grunts
-It broke away from the usual maze type maps, it has science facilities, outdoor bases, helicopters that made firing passes and dropped troops.

The single player game was likely 90% of the reason most people first bought it. Now its mostly for the mods, but still, good mods, good game.

Now the trick is if Valve can make a HL2 with a better engine but retain the awsome continuity, action, level design, and challenge of the original HL. If HL2 is made on either the UT2003 or Q4 engine, pfft might as well write up the Game of the Year awards soon as it hits the shelves.

Its more of a thinking mans game. And it was the most revolutionary fps ever, just because you have the attention span of a toe nail, and cant play any game that doesnt throw enemies and immediate blood at you before the title screen even comes up, doesnt mean it sucks.

I 100% agree with you. The only problem is that Valve is so tied up with milking thier cash cow Counterstrike (well who could blame them) that they will probably never get around to making HL2 (exageration).

Lets hope CS:CZ doesnt roll over and kill HL2 just like it did to TF2.

OMG d00d aren't stories so stupid? I mean, 15 minutes before I get to <i>shoot</i> anything? OMG.

I guess you've never played an FPS before Half-Life, because my god were they boring before it came along. Quake, Duke3D(Maybe the exception), Quake II... all their gameplay amounted to was: Kill stuff, get key, get big gun, open door, kill big boss with big gun, end level.

Half-Life was an amazing singleplayer game, you just don't have the maturity to stomach it, I'd say.

Valve has not been a very productive company though, what was the last game that they released? Most the expansion packs (if not all) have been made by gearbox, was HL infact the last game they actually developed themselves! One game in maybe 7-8 years wow, well it probably took atleast 2 years to make HL.

What's up with you people? all so flame happy, got something to prove?

"I mean, 15 minutes before I get to <i>shoot</i> anything?" It's called a FPS for a reason, if you want to run around solving puzzles play an adventure game like Grim Fandango or something.

"...you just don't have the maturity" Im not the one using comments like "OMG d00d".

i really dont care a lot about the graphics...... if the game is funny and the community is cool, thats all i need to play it...... hl however has some nice graphics, take a look at ns.... its a masterpiece......
hl has still a lot of juice..... and they will squeeze it...... they will

what i think is keeping people in hl

    1. players, everyone you know has hl and it is always more fun to play with friends than strangers.

    2. players, none of the new games has so many servers as cs for example, this is annoying when your used to
finding good servers close to you.

    3. hl is verry good at lag isues and making it posible for the 56kers to play too (there are lots of those poor litle buggers)

    4. gamers are cheap **obscenity**, why pay for a new game when everyone is playing hl?

    5. hl is old and was made to be played on old computers, why buy a new comp when all you do is play hl with your friends? (yes i know some of you are sitting there with
your latest geforce card, but your still are a minority, usualy a loud one tho)

all that talk about how hl feals better is just crap, hl deathmatch does not feal good at all for me, all that fealing was made by mods and can be made in another engine.

Without Counter-Strike, Half-Life goes all the way down to the bottom of the list. I hate to admit it, but CS is what's keeping HL afloat. That and you can use any PC to play.

Dod is fairly new according ot my records.

And by the way i think HL could survive with out CS. DoD is quite popular with what now 500-1000 servers? And NS is getting popular with its what is it now 500 servers?

Sure if you took cs away HL would definetly decline and it would probably speed up its Half-life (Get it? Halflife?!?! heheh wink wink)

Ok yeah enough bad jokes. im tired.

dont forget that HL maps (both the game and mod community) often have a feel that the map is just part of a larger area. i mean, i've gone and typed no_clip with sv_cheats 1 in normal HL <i>just</i> too see if the corridor lead to a secret room, or some highly "hidden-in-the-shadows" room or some such thing. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

i really actually thought that the map was extenuated enough to have a "secret" room through some high-hp'ed breakable with no hit sound. i guess thats why players keep playing; so they can nag on Valve to add-on new areas...

    or mod-makers. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

not to mention that there are SO many people that own/dLed HL and HL mods (respectivly, i hope <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> ) and nearly everyone i know at school and my group of friends has it.

    basically it comes down to:
    1 Fan Base
2 The insane mod-maker comunity (yes, NS is part of the asylum) that pushes HL engine to its limits/beyond its limits
3 The system requirments are so low i can get 5-10 fps on a 120mhz, 128mb ram, no vid card system (which i own only really to play older games on)
4 Fun factor goes off the scales when you mod it with your own/someone else's mod. (ie: Natural Selection)
    5 It has a really low $ impact now, ya get ma drift? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Could it be that the presence of WON and the first truly functional cd-key checker has almost all players buying retail versions instead of using the several "under the table" methods of online play? I know that I play games that I buy much more than I play games that, ahem, install themselves on my computer accidentally from the internet, ahem.

Please, Razor you don't understand(Probably anything). But anyways, half-life had a storyline... I am sure you never beat the game so you wouldn't know. But it was a very revolutionary game at its time. All the reasons stated before why it was. I don't see why you can't understand that but you DO get to shoot, often. You have to play the game to find out, I am sorry your attention span isn't that long. The train ride has a point... the whole beginning of the game revolves around getting out of there so if you paid attention you would have noticed the surroundings later on.

Believe it or not, half-life was a great game. For all of you that jumped on the wagon and got it when counter-strike came out... please don't try to act like you know what you are talking about. Same goes if you didn't beat single player.

**obscenity** off cause I disagreed with your noobish oppinions about the 1.04 patch LMAO...

Othervice there is no way you would have replied to a post that far back in this thread...

Besides can't you come up with any arguments of your own?

"it was a very revolutionary game at its time"
"I am sorry your attention span isn't that long"

Instead of cutting and pasting from other peoples post you imbecile LOL.

"if you paid attention you would have noticed the surroundings later on."

I think you're the one who has not played through the game, you never visit ANY of those locations later on that the train ride pass through.

"Believe it or not, half-life was a great game", oppinions differ, perhaps that's a new concept to you?
  • RazorClawRazorClaw Join Date: 2002-11-06 Member: 7413Members
HL might be considered a great game if you only plan to play through it once, but it's linearly scripted nature makes it a tedious experience to play through it more than once or twice. Unlike games where there is just mindless fragging, such you can play through tens of times without getting bored.

It would have helpped if they allowed you to skip past all the boring dialogues etc... I figure you could leave your PC on and go watch some TV during the unskippable intro.

Well, it got game of the year. That says something. And it was a relutionary game... you can't say it wasn't. And I did beat the game, numerous times. And you do see a lot of that stuff again. You have no idea what you are talking about. You are just talking out of your "butt". So I didn't copy and paste the ideas... and I said them. They are still ideas you can't change, do I really need to add more? Here. Half-life was game of the year. Why? Because of it's single player. Half-life got a 9.6 on gamespot. There are about no other PC games that high. Maybe some... but anyways. Why? Because it had a great storyline, interactive computer players, and a different type of surrounding. Please keep your rage of being wrong to yourself, it doesn't help you be any less wrong.

Adding on, because you posted twice in a row. I did play it more than once. That is why there is mods now, so the GREAT game can have replay value. How many times do you need to play a single player? That is why there is multiplayer. *Sigh*...
