<div class="IPBDescription">Frustrating!</div>Here is a small tutorial how to start a popular EU-server.

I think every new serveradmin need this essential Infos.

1: Throw the dedicated server on hardware that cant handle the game. It doesn’t matter, believe me.

2: [FR] or French must be part of the servername. The rest of the EU players going to connect anyway. Who cares, seem to be most EU-players like the sound of the french language.

<img src="http://johnkennethmuir.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/reload2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

3: As an extra to the [FR]-tag, the servername should contain parts of popular NS1 servernames. So every NS1-uber Pro veteran feels @ home within 1st minute.

Hint: Point 3 can be used without [FR] tag on localized servers with nearly the same effect.

Result:

<img src="https://dl.dropbox.com/u/52045821/ole1.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Have fun with your unplayble, but nearly always full server.

Dont try the following, these are useless features nobody need and want:

1: A machine as fast as possible to get rockstable 30 ticks. (Noone will see the difference anyway)
2: An infrastructure around your server, like an Homepage where you can see servernews or an IRC Chat to contact admins if needed.
3: An advanced constistency check to avoid cheap textures „cheats“ , Hacks and other exploits
4: The option to vote maps
5. New features, maps and fixes implemented via mods.

Although your concern is probably legitimate, this is not the way to voice it. I have adjusted the topic name to avoid confusion.

Since I do think it's good to discuss the topic itself, I'll leave the thread open for now. Come up with solutions. Mine is to contact the admins and ask them to stop it - worth a shot, no?

Well, after paying over 1000€ over the last 1,5 years to host a server for the community and seeing them totally ignored its like a slap in the face.

    - People play on crap servers going down to 5 ticks
    - They complain about french players talking french on french servers (wich its a joke for sure)
    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=125640" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...howtopic=125640</a>
    - They play on servers, where noone knows the admin
    - Servers are modded and noone knows what mods are running there

We have still some of the fastest NS2 servers (4,8 ghz), they are feature rich, with admins around and you can get Infos from our Homepage.
    Nothing help

Cause this im losing my passion for the game and i think every community get what they deserve.
I think its time for me to save my money and search another game.

    Over and out.

what the s*** are you talking about?
Every HBZ is full, always, everytime!
I love your server, the problem is the idle kick, you go to toilet and then you are kicked.
I only play combat only now, its fast action, it's fun and get content every week.
Your server also host this sweet mod, i'm sure your server are always full, at least if i try to join they are.

Thanks for your answer but its not true:
Dont know when you are playing, but they are empty @ 80-90% of the day.

Its like from Hero to Zero.
Monash (Australia) and KKG (America) made there way from beta to the final version. Only HBZ (Europe) didnt made it.
These servers where my babys and i dont want to see them ignored anymore.

I spend so much time, so much passion, so much money in this servers (too much of everything for sure) and the result is:
    80% empty.
  • ZeCruiserZeCruiser Join Date: 2012-11-07 Member: 167991Members
Really? 80% of the day? Must be some long 20% that the server is populated, I also can never find an open slot on the HBZ servers. But don't let that get you down, for what it's worth, I love the HBZ servers and would like to play on those more. However I usually end up with terrible luck and can never join them...

I wonder why people stay on bad servers. I usually pick the best ping, best playercount server I can find. With preference being on servers I already know. But usually I end up not finding a free slot on my preferred servers and have to take the next best I find. So I end up on bad servers. A lot. But when I notice they start lagging and people start rubberbanding I usually decide to get off the server and find a better one. I notice the other players either don't complain or don't leave. It's like they don't even care, truly remarkable.

I would play more on HBZ if you had servers with fewer slots. Personally I look mainly for 16 slots servers.

Still, I was under the impression that HBZ was very popular. It can be very difficult to get in, even when auto-retrying you might have to try again a few times due to multiple players connecting at the same time.

Edit: I also agree that the AFK kick may be a bit too aggressive.

I play on HBZ quite regularly, and I usually see full servers or just a few spots free. It would be a shame if the HBZ serves went down, there's generally a good community with decent teamwork happening.

Unfortunately the fact is that the average consumer for game servers would rather save an extra dollar or two to purchase a server not hosted on good hardware. NS2 is an expensive game to run properly. On top of that most companies don't support fast enough machines to be able to host a full 24 slot NS2 server since it is extremely intensive.

It's a combination of the consumer being cheap, the host being broke and the game being way to intense.

This will be my last post on this forum.
I had great 2 years here and i wish UWE luck.

Dont know why im writing this cause 98% didnt know who i am.

    Anyway:
    You dont believe me?

And then compare it with Monash:
    <a href="http://www.gameserverdirectory.com/server/130.194.4.241:27019/" target="_blank">http://www.gameserverdirectory.com/server/...94.4.241:27019/</a>

    KKG:

or with the "great" srver from my initial post:

    Hey Para,

My first post here just to let you know that I mostly played on your servers since beta and I really enjoyed it. Please dont quit your servers as they have some great performance and nice little mods going on (I think I saw the mapchange-voting stuff on HBZ first and some weeks ago there were custom skins installed with blood red infestation).

I see that 1000€ over the last 1,5 years is a bunch of money, but maybe there is a compromise like not having HBZ{1,2,3} but instead one less?

I really want to play more, unfortunately my real life is a little bit intensive at the moment, hope it gets better around Christmas :)
  • endarendar Join Date: 2010-07-27 Member: 73256Members, Squad Five Blue
I don't think that compromise would save any money. All servers are probably running off a single box.

I can't really talk about solutions as I don't know the problem myself, but is this something UWE should fix by changing the default server browser? I'm not even going to touch the language issues of playing on a French server and not speaking french, because when I play ns2, 99.9% of people I play with speak English, so I won't understand.

But as for people choosing lower "quality" servers, it might be beneficial to make up a new number, instead of "performance". Almost any server can achieve 100% performance with 24 players, for a very short time (ready room/round just starting). Where it gets interesting would be a 60 minute performance average, or a performance at certain entity counts.

The truth is more people play this game than read the forums (especially the server forums), so they have absolutely no idea.

If your servers can handle 24 slots i recommend doing it -

as people have said, the default browser list always has the most amount of players at the top - so if you have 24 slots and players I will bet your servers will be full all the time too.

Before your server might have been populated in Beta because there was a limited amount of servers - the problem with the browser list is that the "favorites" button is also done outside of the game - so people hardly ever do it - they only like to join "full" servers - Loyalty is one thing, but once again it falls down to this point again.

No one is going to "look" through the list of servers as there is way too many.

If you try to rename your servers - put the specs etc - then it'll be more catchy -

My servers are full all the time in North America (look at my Sig) they are also ranked number 1 and 4 in the world - this is because I am running quality servers and the tickrate is constantly 30.

Lol, i looked for your server but i've never found it in the server browser. I found no IPs to directly connect on them (OK i forgot that there are online browsers part) and i also didn't find your page on google or bing or...

Now, the day you are closing, i find everything by randomly look in the forums. o lol. irony

    This is a loss... :/

The mod's should consider moving this thread to General Discussion.

This is no thread about "How to get started with NS2 Server" but the current situation of the servers out there.

HBZ Server's are very strong and do provide almost always good games. In the background depara is focusing so much on reliable server and game conditions it would be so sad to loose the HBZ Servers.

This should become a thread on how to promote good servers in the server list so every player from NS2 can profit the most of the game.

    well, <a href="http://www.hbz-clan.de" target="_blank">www.hbz-clan.de </a>would have done the trick ;)

we even got a built-in serverbrowser for quick connect to our (+ some other competitive) servers. It's really a shame if the standard serverbrowser is listing stuff on top because of the max slots it provides :| that's a big issue!

i understand depara, he put so much effort, money and time into the hbz servers, just to see them empty most of the time (the last weeks). it gives you some kind of bad feeling after all the time, you gonna doubt yourself and maybe the community. I don't wanna lose the hbz servers, it would be a great miss for EU community.

maybe it would be a hotfix to upgrade the slots up to 24, until UWE does something with the server browser? 24 player servers suck but hey, if UWE preferred lagging 24 slots instead of high performance 18 slots... why not?

    edit: +1 for general discuss

I think the bigger issue was the people from the beta never faved it and today it is still very hard to add servers to your fav list. I have been lucky to get regulars to fav us despite the difficulties. The real issue I find is getting a server populated at the start of the day. This is where the large servers have such an advantage for pubbing. The player capacity is so high that in the off hours they can still keep enough players in to keep the server floating. With lower slot servers like ours I am sitting in the server waiting for players to join for a long time so we can start a 1v1 after which the server is then full by the end of that map.

From what I have seen the largest issue to building your servers up right now if you not a megga slot server is having someone besides yourself being the one to start up the server every single day.

One solution could be a mod or update that made the game more friendly to 1v1 like an AI com that goes away after X players or something just to get the game started. However, I doubt that is going to happen.
