Phasegate Start On Pubs

and the marines who hate them
ok, we've agreed that 1ip, obs, phasegate + phasegate at hive is the leanest quickest start (as opposed to the traditional: 2ip, tf, 2turr, armory method). then resource the hive and then, build defenses in.

the only problem i have is, how the heck do you get marines to listen to you and actually do it on a pub without them all jumping up and down at base yelling "drop the armory and turrets you n00b comm!". comm chair needs an admin slap feature. like an ability to zap a marine the way a dog trainer zaps a dog... mmm

If it's affecting troop morale that early in the game, you need to address their questions and low morale quickly with a juicy reply.

"This works. I will explain it to you when we win."

something like that. Don't flame em too much. You need those idoits to win. But say something that'll build confidence/curiosity.

You could also just order them around, giving them no time to question your strategy.

"All of you, Get to sewer hive and hold it until you build phase there"

Grunts that are on the move, dont have time to whine. Anyway once troops start to recieve a steady stream of orders, they start to get a feeling that their comm knows what he's doing and hence shut up.

    good luck

You should listen to them, you need an armory to build phase gates =P

ok, admittedly i havent tried this build yet just cos of fear of noob marines who cant shoot straight so i havent come up against a situation where i needed a phasegate before i had an armory... i did however only think the obs needed inf portals to be built. regardless, i suppose the real question is: what are the odds of 2 random pubbing marines standing up to the alien rush?

nope, just need an observatory. Check out the tech tree in the manual.

--EDIT: just doublechecked. My bad. You do need an armory--

That strat kinda hinges on the aliens you are playing against and the quality of the marines. If they can't move in force or the aliens rush you and chew them up in transit it's a waste and you'll be totally broke. Or if you get there and drop buildings....then the aliens rush in force...you lose the hive and all the RP's you spent. I'll stick to my slow move toward one hive. By slow I mean first 5 minutes. Along the way i drop RT's all over. By the time I get to the hive I have the rp's to lock it down...and a few minutes later i usually have the second hive, if not, I have all the RP points.

Play on a server with a bunch of other regulars... If you get people who know the game well on the server a lot, then the newbie strategy of placing a tfac in main base will happen less and less.

I play on a server with a lot of regulars, they listen all the time.. well the regulars anyway. Not the drop in for one game guys. The easiest build is 2 inf. portals, armory, obs, phase. By the time they get to the hive you should have 20 for another phase. The build time should have been long enough for you to aquire (sp?) 22 resources. Place the res tower. The next is turret factory and turrets, after this you're good to go for the rest of the game. Plan away.

I play as a comm alot and its sometimes very hard to gather your marines to get them to listen. Most of them always run off on there own like rambo to die and then they start screaming at me to give them HA/HMG so they can lose it again and waste yet more precious res.

This is why i prefer alien now... too many idiots. -_-

What you do is first ask, "Who in here is a good shooter". Not only that question gives you creditablity, it gives morale and pride to your marines. By saying "OK you two/three (good shooters) guard the base until we get a second phase gate to a hive" the marine will think, "oh this commander acknowledged that we're good, lets not bash him." Then you proceed to waypoint the rest of your marine to a hive.

Of course, the outcome of your plight depends on if they're really good shooters and take out the skulk rush if any. If they lied and all died, you're the one to blame .

Typically I let them know right off, "I am doing a fast phase build, 2 of you stay behind, we are going to take 2 hives ASAP."

I don't have problems with my marines not following orders 1 bit after that. I never seige the last hive, I always get them on getting me nodes after we have 2 hives, then I give them any/all toys they want. It's a sure-fire way of marines listening to you, you listen to them.

I against sound judgement, give out some med packs early in the game, why? Well, it lets my marines know I am watching them, and want them to suceed. In a match I would never do that of course, but passing out a few medpacks early on goes a long way to getting them listening to your commands in a pub.

Watching your marines gives another benifit, lets you know who you can trust to give weapons/welders to and have them actually use them right in mid-game. It rough on marines to spend 35 on a welder/HMG only to watch the guy die from going off alone. if you have a marine who is following orders, and doing a good job, give him that shotgun he asks for, he will put it to good use. I'll take a marine who has the gun he wants, knows his commander is listening to him, and is now dedicated to the commanders plan over a 4th sentry anyday.. (19 for sentry, 20 for shotgun) Also don't be afraid to say, "sorry, but I need the money elsewhere right now, no guns for anyone" when a marine who isn't following orders wants one. Oonce he leaves spawn, give it out to the ones who do.. Typically i reward the marines who hold spawn for me with first pick in weapons. I also ask, "jetpacks or HA", and choose what those marine(s) desire. If your team wants JP's, give them to them when possible.

I can't stress enough, let your troops know you plan up front, if they think you have a plan, they will trust your judgement and follow your orders.

captmorgan - you sound like you play just like me, I am so used to public servers, and that is the best way to command.... depending of course on the Noob factor.

Usually, on the rare occasion I command (usually because noone else will ), I'll build the obs (usually reassures vets), and starts scanning. Once I find the hive, I'll tell the marines, decide which hive to secure, and say "2 stay in base to defend, all others to [Hive]. MOVE!". If anybody asks for a waypoint, I'll just say "Follow the group numbnuts." Phase the base and hive, build a RF, TF and 2 turrets, leave 2 men to guard the hive, and get all others to secure the second hive. Once that's done, I'll cap a few res, build up base defense, secure the hives some more, and equip the marines for heavy firepower. Then I'll say "Have fun", and turn them loose.

Of course, this assumes that my men don't get eaten a lot. If that happens, they'll often start trickling out of base one at a time, and we'll lose. None of my screaming, begging or ordering will help now. Ho hum.

If your marines can't shoot, you are going to lose anyway, no matter how great of a plan you have. I have probably won 20 games in a row as comm, if not more, and know what? i never won a single game, my marines won them all, i just helped them do it. You are there to help them, not vice-versia.

Were you double checking on a Linux server? Because for some reason, you need an armory to build a phase gate on those. According to the tech tree, you don't need one. On Windows servers, I'm pretty sure you don't need one either.

I can't shoot to save my butt, but I know that, and I use it to spray lead as support for someone else. Since I'm lacking in the trigger finger direction, I usually keep a better eye out and pistol some lone skulky while he trying to sneak up behind someone.
