Is there a way to run hlds In dos?
I only ask cause in windows its a dos screen.
If there is a way to run a dedicated server in dos.
What would i need to configure to do so.
I just want to see if it provideds better performance.
windows hogs things linux seems to have bugs. (I never used linux so i cant give honest statment)

Any thoughts on this subject or not.

If you want to run a Half-Life NS server then you should only use either Windows 2000, Windows XP or Linux/*nix

What makes Windows 2000/xp So special?
I have used Windows ME -Laugh as you wish-
And I Get great fps. My server fps average around 90 - 100 Without any boosters
When i have tried to use windows 2000 Advanced server I had constant server crashes and 60s fps.
I really just wanted to know if it was possible.

No it's not possible to run a HLDS server in DOS. HLDS looks DOS-ish but is not DOS.

Win2k and WinXP are NT based. This generally means less crashes or lockups which require you to reboot the entire machine. Win2k Adv Server tends to be picky about hardware, which probably explains your crash problems. The 60FPS thing is a Win2K/XP limitation which can be fixedwith certain tweak programs.

    That is true.

HLDS just uses stdout....instead of having a gui. hlds is written to handle windows sockets...dos doesn't have this....if you wana run it in something like dos use linux.

but you don't want to run your server too fast, if people keep having framerates at about 100 then it can lag down the server, because each time they make a frame they request information from the server. Also Win 2k/XP are good because of much better memory management than the 9X oses, and more stable, and other stuff.

if your server is @ 100fps, thats fine...its the clients that suck.....thats why valve had these nifty little tools called sv_maxrate and sv_minrate

the windows 2000/ system is designed for corporate use, and for use as a server, so better performance than the 9x/me systems, which are made for general home users. xp is practically 2k with a make over, hence the goodness as a server. pretty much all windows servers sux in comparison to linux.

if u want to run hlds from "dos" ie, command line, it is just that, a command line, it will give you no speed improvements, as it is just a virtual window.

anyway if u do just run hlds with some paramaters such as:

    c:\SIERRA\half-life\hlds.exe -game ns -port 27015 +map ns_bast [-nomaster] [-insecure] [+sv_lan 1] [-motdfile c:\SIERRA\half-life\ns\motd.txt] [-mapcyclefile c:\SIERRA\half-life\ns\mapcycle.txt] [-serverfile c:\SIERRA\half-life\ns\server.cfg]

that should cover it, things in [ ] are optional, they can be in any order

Yeh . Been there dude, i have switched between Win2k and WinXP thousands of times, but now im getting tired of WinXP. It seems to always start to do some wierd things in long run, like crashing for example. Last time it refused to run Half-life for some odd reason, so i said "Thats it!".

I think you guys should try Gentoo linux. It is Uber-optimized (because it compiles EVERYTHING for your processor and setup). And guess what, you can run most windows games on it. HL, wc3, UT2003 and q3 run NATIVE on it. I'm going to install a 10gb harddrive later and tell you what my preformance is.

to all the people who have problems in win XP / 2000. Did you update your bios and drivers? And did you check if all of your hardware supports win XP/2000.
