Today FPS seemed a bit better again for a while, but it didnt last. One game it's fine the other it's utter crap, independant on number of players on the server.
Even on an empty server with lowest graphics on 1280x720 certain rooms will drop me from 70 fps to 30. Then when there's action it gets worse.
I'm running EVGA GTX 275 AMD Athalon II triple core @ 3.3ghz (Was 3.6 ocd before but same problem) 8 GB 800mhz DDR2 ram Windows 7 64-bit
The only way I can run this perfectly is lowest everything on 640x480. It used to run great. I've already ensured no other programs are running in the background etc to try and troubleshoot. Latest drivers etc.
I feel there is something significantly wrong here. Graphics have improved yes, but I run games like battlefield 3 which has way more players with no performance problems and the graphics are great.
Natural selection 1 ran great too. Albeit graphics are seriously dated now. My point of mentioning that is the concept of placing buildings doesn't destroy CPU etc.
So what gives guys? I love the game, I want to play it competitively, but I need at least 30 frames per sec on a decent level of graphics. Heck right now I'd settle of at least keeping it with my standard res of 1920x1080 with lowest everything else.
I did not notice any changes in performance. When a round lasts very long with the Aliens having the upper hand this can lead to performance problems when a big part of the map is filled with litereally hundrets of crags, shades and so on.
So I played tonight since the latest patch for the first time and I am also suffering the exact same symptoms of performance slowdown after a short period of play. The game ran flawlessly previously and the only change to my system was the newest game patch. It seems when I first open the game everything will run fine but after a few minutes the fps drops significantly and the 'rendering' latency in the profile goes from 0ms to around 16ms or more.
Here's some screens: All I did was launch the game, and run summit in training mode and start the profiler.
@Omar: I have much lower specs and higher fps than you... so for me it looks like the engine has a problem with specific hardware components. I didn't notice any performance decrease in NS2 for ages now. I've got AMD x4 925 with 8GB RAM and a ATI Radeon HD6800... and I have over 35fps at all time, even during combat...
Maybe there's a engine-problem regarding nvidia cards or something? Anyone having fps-problems with ATI?
Well this post: <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=125195&view=findpost&p=2034355" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...t&p=2034355</a>
is having an identical performance issue with the WaitingForBufferedFrames call most prominent in the profiler and he seems to be on an ATI card.
Also the same thing happens to me, when I alt-tab out and back to the game, the fps will return to normal but then soon deteriorate.

Yup, turns out my GPU was overheating because the input fan was blocked and the throttling was kicking in. Whoopse! Should have tried running other games before jumping to the conclusion that it was the game engine.
To clarify before responding to the suggestions below, my issue has not cropped up in 3 days. It was inconsistent originally, but occurred enough to be an issue. It has seemingly dwindled to a bit more stability lately.

Did a uninstall / re-install of drivers, to be thorough. Took a baseline, used the Explorer Mode Ready Room (didn't have time to go process game play) and I know that's not a load, but figured at least some evidence would be noticed.
Both with and without PhysX installed, same FPS in Ready Room (200).
I'm going to game tonight without PhysX installed, since I don't use it. If there is a marked positive difference, I'll take some time to duplicate heavy load with and without.

Tried NS out on my laptop (macbook 15'' retina running w7) a few days ago for about an hour and it was playing fine. Fired it up today and I can barely eek out 15-20 fps. I changed nothing on my computer (been using os x since last time I tried).
I've had the same issue running a Radeon 5870 with much lower performance after one of the latest patches (release patch was great). Will try some of the suggestions in here when I get a chance to play and come back to you.
Cheers for looking into this, it's a real problem! Roo
I'm running into issue where the FPS isn't consistently bad but every server I join I'm getting intense choppy affect. Every few seconds the game hitches and hangs for a few seconds before snapping me back into the game.
Further I'm having issue when I quit the game it locks up my computer for 15-30 seconds.
I also have a NVIDIA card.
Last week / earlier this week it was working just fine. Only recently have I had these issues arise.
On release it took few days of play but the game eventually become playable. I got 30 fps in light combat and 35 outside of it and 20ish in heavy combat.
Then the next patch came out and again same thing.
After that 230 i think? I had about a 5fps drop in every thing. then 232 came out and even after about 30 hours of play My fps were down another 5-10 to 25 outside of combat and sometimes as low as 4 fps in combat. But only the last few days something very strange happened. I'm at about 130 hours of play and Now I'm getting up to 45 outside of combat and 30-35 in ligiht combat and 25 in really heavy combat.
Okay I had a little test. I didn't have any change in FPS by changing resolution. Turning certain settings on had the expected drop in FPS, though none was a really huge effect. I found that FPS massively dropped (from 75 to 40) when I switched from marines to aliens and stood in an infested hive room. When I moved to the marine base, I got back up to ~70 FPS again. 75 was the very best I got by setting everything to low/off (resolution is 1920/1200, ATI 5870, Intel i7 820 (stock), 8GB DDR3 at stock timings). Putting the graphics quality to what I would consider acceptable ('medium') got me 45 FPS stood still in marine base, and about 60 in the ready room.
I don't have the values from before the patch, but I can tell you it was considerably higher (maybe 2x?). I never got slow-downs at all, even end game on full graphics settings (except ambient occlusion), whereas now I have to turn all the eye candy off to get somewhere approaching passable framerates.
Would be happy to provide specifics if you let me know what you need!

After a mapchange performance was back to normal.

It seems the call to 'WaitForBufferedFrames' is the culprit that's eating up most of the rendering time.

b229? i think was the best FPS, i would get around 40.
As of this very latest patch, i now get 12.
