Game Crash = All Comp Fans Maximum

Happened twice the other day. Was playing as a marine when suddenly the screen would go black, the audio would freeze and all the fans in my computer would rev up to max speed. Both times I didn't hesitate to wait and see what would happen if I ctrl+alt+delete; I quickly flipped my power supply off as the sudden noise and computer rev startled me.

    i would say open your PC and check your fan's? i think your PC might overheat, and shut down "everything" to prevent damage and let the fans run full power to cool it of? (expectations, so don't take me on my word)

    ok so I am back from my thanksgiving vacation. I started up Guild Wars 2 and played for about 30 seconds before I experienced the same symptoms as in the OP except NO fan speed increase. Tried playing GW2 again and it crashed within 30 seconds.

    I didn't power off the computer this time and the audio buzzing stopped in a short of amount of time. My screen eventually displayed no video connection so I opened my computer case and sure enough my video card was not active...no power I assume because the built in gpu fan wasn't spinning.

    Extraneous story: In a nutshell two...maybe 3 months ago my 470 decided to produce artifacts on screen so under warranty I RMA'd with EVGA. They sent me a 570 replacement and it worked for about 2 weeks before I started receiving a motherboard beep sequence of 1 long 2 short. Took my comp to a computer lab for testing and they said all my parts worked flawlessly except of course the video card. So RMA'd the 2 week old card and got this replacement...that I guess you can say is DOA since it won't play games but will run the desktop. Fortunately my motherboard has an onboard Radeon 4290 so I can still play old games for awhile.

    now I have to call EVGA and see what can be done about this 3rd RMA..!..

    I would say those temps are high. My gpu never goes over 65 and cpu never above 45. Last time I checked out a problem a friend of mine had, he was up in the 70's on both cpu and gpu while playing, and his fans were all clogged with dust. After cleaning he was back to normal. Your sudden crash however reminds me of a driver issue with potential fabric oc'd gpu, or that the gpu can't handle the heat of the flamethrower :P

    yes the temps are a little high but iirc the card itself is rated to destroy itself at 114C.

    anyway I removed all my drivers and reinstalled. Was able to play GW2 without crashing; about a 5 minute session before deciding to go to bed as it was late for me. Woke up today and found this youtube video that shows exactly the issue I'm having with the buzzing noise. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHxAHV76ZcM" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHxAHV76ZcM</a> . Many forums discuss this issue as common and is related to bad manufacturing of the card. There is no imminent danger however the noise is usually related to the fan barrings and over time could cause cooling issues.

    I've done a 5-RMA (7800 GT -> 7900 GT -> 8800 GT -> 8800 GT -> 9800 GT) with EVGA before that recently ended up with a dead card that I've just given up on and replaced with a Sapphire (ATI/AMD).

    I'd avoid EVGA like the plague. Haven't had any hardware issues with my HIS and Sapphire ATI/AMD cards so thats what I'm sticking with.

    ^ I'll keep that in mind.

    I called EVGA and they walked me through some troubleshooting. First they asked me to swap my card into someone else's comp to see if the problem persisted. The issue still happened; card just flat out ceased functioning under heavy load. Second they asked me to check my bios 12V reading for fluctuations. There was a slight fluctuation but it held at levels 12.302V and 12.239V. (Power supply is OCZ 700W).

    EVGA has since payed for my RMA shipping just on the card whining noise so I'm not going to argue at the moment. I'm thinking of contacting OCZ by email and see if they have any insight. (calling may work better but I'm without a video card to test against if I get the shipping label tomorrow...plus if the card is truly malfunctioning beyond the whining then I can't really imagine getting proper results).
