Massive amounts of Wii U's bricking.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Firmware update is too slow, so users turn it off<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
So basically, as people boot up their new Wii U's, they are greeted with a 5GB Firmware update...that installs as it downloads.
Now if someone...stops this download, i.e, shuts their system down, they lose power, or their net goes out...basically their firmware is incomplete and you got a bricked Wii U that is useless now.
5GB may not seem like alot to me or you, but most people in the U.S...have slow speeds and very low caps...and think outside the U.S..
So what alot of people basically did was...cut the download and attempt to play the Wii U in Offline mode. Be curious to see how this goes...Nintendo could say it's their fault, make some bogus claim about user responsibility...but it was their dumb idea to replace the Firmware WHILE downloading it.
and 5GB is hardly a "patch" for Firmware. Can you imagine for people who download at like 200KB/s? Christ...they have to leave their console on overnight...one interruption and bam, bricked Wii U.
You just lost your expensive, shiny new console, and can't play it until MAYBE, Nintendo replaces it.
This could spell disaster for the Wii U. First impressions are everything, and unlike the RROD or YLOD, this could happen to EVERY Wii U.
****Also let us consider that, the Wii U is aimed at the ages 6 & up group, it is primarily a console for children, whom would have no idea about these things.

There are obviously no replacement Wii U's, they can't keep them in stock anywhere...and have none to give out.
So these people could be without their Wii U, that they paid for, for weeks, if Nintendo even decides to replace them.
HUGE ###### up.
I don't own a Wii U, is the update Opt-In or is it a non-negotiable fetch on discovery?
What the hell, 5GB?!? That's even bigger than Windows 7! Hopefully, they've canceled the big updates and will push out a small update to fix these issues first.
This sound extremely serious and could hit Nintendo hard if they don't do anything.
buy ps3 = console with stove
buy xbox = 3 red dots
buy wii = free brick
Does anyone else see the irony in this?
Guess i'll have to be careful with mine when I get it next week. Bleh.
It's weird. Nintendo have done a lot of things i really like with this console but they seem determined to rectify that mistake with all the crazy mess-ups they're doing with it's launch :P
I'm hoping to invite a whole bunch of folk from work to get some multiplayer fun going on launch day on nintendoland (and maybe zombi-u though i really bought that one for the single player dark souls FPS thing)
This is also the first time I've gotten hardware over the interwebs. I get all my games online but I always used to get my consoles from retailers just in case everything went pear-shaped. I just hope I don't regret changing my habits :s
But yes, magnificent fail Nintendo. Good job on totally not understanding internet.

I'd say it's a pretty safe thing when you've waited a few months to see how things are panning out for the grubby masses... but it's pretty risky to get launch day tech online generally speaking (at least unless the company you're buying from has spectacular return policies, amazon's pretty good, but still slower than retailers)

You're more protected these days buying online than you are buying in a store.
Got/Getting mine from ShopTo :o

Maybe, it's just a lot easier to physically return stuff than go through the ritual of sending stuff back. Or maybe not, I've never done it now that i think about it :3
On a not quite related note, this vid blew my mind:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTLRdP9oOfw" target="_blank">Using the Wii-U's Gamepad as a sensor bar</a>
</div>
At first I was wondering why you thought I was impressed by the sensor bar part of that, then I noticed the title of the vid :P
It blew my mind because with the pad and wii-mote the wii-u can effectively act as a standalone unit for certain games without needing the TV at all. Admittedly it's not a true replacement for the TV experience in terms of visible area and resolution but I'm still excited by the thought of a full blown console that could theoretically work alone. This is all tempered by the fact that it'll probably only work with a small selection of titles, of course and in this case it's more of a 'ooh look!' than something with much real application but the intrinsic possibility gets me.
I know mobile phones are fast catching up in terms of power but without buying a lot of periphals from 3rd party vendors to add various missing control options you still can't quite get the 'full console' experience of controls in hand, and display, seperate from the controls, taking up a decent chunk of your visual real estate. PSP and 3DS also don't quite qualify for what i mean either as the controls are part of the display in that case which is where the discomfort of using them can kick in sometimes.
I'm one of those crazy folk who's frequently more interested in where things can go instead of where they currently are. :3

I am fairly certain the gamepad must be within range of the main unit for any of this to work. While a neat experiment, it doesn't offer anything new (expect you can keep playing while eating dinner :P)
