Commanders, Do You Care About Winning

...or your teammates enjoyment?
This is for the commanders. Do you only care about winning, or do you also care about letting the marines have a good time? Will you build 5 seige cannons next to the hive, or just one and drop some HA and HMGs/jetpacks and gren launchers, etc to the marines, even if it isn't necessary?

I'm just curious.

Winning. When I comm, I comm to win. I don't comm too often, because marines apparently care less about winning than about having that jetpack/HMG. And I have very little tolerance for disobedient marines, and even less tolerance for marines who ask me for guns/jetpacks/HA.

Hell, even as a marine, I'd rather snuff out the last skulk than have an HMG/jetpack. Winning is fun.

As a marine, I would rather have a team outfitted with the HA/JP/HMG and whatnot, than just siege and turret-crawl over the entire map. That doesn't take much skill, and it's boring.

However, as a commander, which I'm not very often, I only care about the win. I don't want to deal with whiny and blaming marines, screaming at me because "OMFFGGG j00 r t3h n000bb!!!11." I hate that.

I think the two are directly related in most cases.

I think what he meant is:

Are you a siege-turreting phase-gate rushing little **obscenity**?

Or do you actully PLAY how it's meant to be played?

EDIT: By siege-turreting I meant the turret crawl, so the aliens can't build anything anywhere.

Team having fun is a #1 concern.

I care about winning. That is what all comms are trained for.To win.

If John Doe Marine wants to play with kazillion amounts of mines for "fun" instead of moving to the waypoint and securing a hive,i will happily tell him to leave the server.

What most marines fail to realize :

1.If they do not win,it is not fun.

2.If they do not get 2 hives secured STAT,it is not fun due to massive fade and onos rapage.

3.The commander is there to make sure you get the 2 hives so that you can have fun raping skulks and lerks with HA/Hmgs.

Three strikes, you're out. Although I have to admit that gunning down poor little skulks with your massive Hamgee is morbidly satisfying.

It's just a game. Winning isn't everything, losing can be just as fun, and sometimes more fun.

True, true.

a long time ago i had played a game where there was a comm and no comm for 5 minute intervals, eventually i got in and placed a CC at a hive, because the original was going up in flames and smoke from all the explosions, and if they got onoses we'd be ****ed up really badly.

i popped 2 iPs in, a TF, and a armory, too. if there was no comm spending stuff for 10 minutes you'd have alot of res in a 9v9, too. i eventually selected everyone, and gave them the WP to the hive.

they all got there with minimal casualties, and they built the new base. sadly, they were fade rushing us alot, and we all took atleast 20 deaths befor the game was over.

nades goin' off, marines yelling "I'm covering you!", "Enemy spotted" and "Weld me! PLEASE!". i'll tell you it was CrAzY. nothing felt like that since, ever. though we lost, if was hella fun.

I always try to win when I command. I don't resort to cheap tactics in order to make sure I win, though.

When the marines are winning, it's fun for the troops. When we're losing and I know I can't salvage it, I'll hand out goodies like jetpacks and let them do whatever so it's bearable to lose.

Actually what ISN'T fun is rushing as marines or skulks and killing the other team. Then you get on the same teams and do it again... and again... something that has been plauging pubs.

1.Yea sure its fun to try and kill fades and onos with LMG.Uh huh.Oh btw getting shot in the chest is fun too.Being beaten up is fun too.And lastly, being immersed in a vat of acid is fun too.

2.See above.

3.Oh ok i get it so you are one of those people who like using lmg only?Um ok......

Losing is fun too?

Yea right. You must be the minority because everyone ive talked to on servers doesnt think losing is fun.

Lets have a server setup so that the alien team has onos while the marine team only has a single infantry portal!Let the onos sit insdie the marine base and rape the marines as they spawn! After all..it is fun isnt it?

I play to win but if I can take it without a lot of siege (meaning I have smart marines) I will use the marines. Mostly because good marines are more devistating that turrets but when my guys have done well, I try and reward them...and if we're losing, eh, might as well give out stuff rather than turret farrm.
• SirusSirus Join Date: 2002-11-13 Member: 8466Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
Well, if your not playing to win, then your playing to lose, and that means that your not trying and thats no fun for anyone. i think marines most enjoy when everyone is trying their best.

I often win, whatever the case on publics.

So to give myself a challenge i let the aliens get a full team of fades, then take a 2nd hive, making sure it swaps hands at least once before securing the 2nd hive. It's good fun. It also requires far more comm skill.

noone said winning isnt fun...they just said you can ALSO have fun even if you dont win

you cant expect to win EVERY SINGLE GAME and i get sick of people after the first 10 mins its prety clear that eventualy we will lose and the say "everyone hit f4"

that is so cheap and cowardly, think about the other team who is winning, remember how winning is fun? just cos your losing people thinks its okay to take the cheap way out.

just because u arnt going to win doesnt mean you cant have fun. and by saying that im not saying i play to lose, im not saying winning isnt fun. i play to have fun.

It also requiers 2 things which are kinda hard to find :

1.A marine team that doesnt eject you when you refuse to take 2nd hive.

2.A good marine team that can take 2nd hive amid all the fade bombardments.

On the subject of playing for fun : The majority of the players seem to think winning is more fun than losing,in most cases.

I try and win, but i recognize that fun is an essential part of the game, if people are not enjoying it, they'll leave, so if we have a hive and and i'm happy with our resources situation, i'll drop some weapons and stuff at the marine start.

If we are on top of the game, have plenty of spare res and the marines are following orders, i'll drop whatever they ask me to. Sometimes a ground eye view is better than the commanders, so i always think the troop should be encouraged to feed back and ask for stuff when they need it.

I agree.... I hate people that do that... If the team is losing, or if its only a small attack, and you may still have chance to turn it around (yes, i've seen it done before) whats the point of leaving.. Even if we have no chance... I prefer to keep fighting to the bitter end, even with against

>winning and fun go hand in hand<

And that reasoning is why some people cheat. They simply can't have fun unless they win. Or at least they think so.

So tell me - during the middle section of the game, when the outcome is balanced on a knife-edge, people running around, shooting, biting and dying everywhere, comm going crazy with too much info etc etc etc - you are not having fun? You can't be, because at that stage you don't know you are going to win.

I simply don't believe you.

Of course it can be frustrating when you are totally outgunned, the commander isn't coping, the teams are unbalanced etc. But to let those infrequent experiences dominate your attitude to this game (or life even!) is simply negative, possibly immature as well.

Enjoy the game, rather than the winning, and believe me the fun will take care of itself.

Arrrgh! I have to admit that I am a bad person! I only try to *win* as a COM.

Several reasons though:

1. I hate losing.
2. People expect me to try my hardest to win when I am COM (at leats I expect that of other COM's)
3. It's a game, you should always try to win.
4. Did I mention I hate losing?
5. Lots of other really really great reasons that I can't think of.
6. Oh yeah, the marines usually get really cranky if you lose, and they *always* blame the COM, so if we lose I do NOT want it to be my fault.

That being said I try to keep an eye out for good players. People who follow orders get fun stuff when I can afford it. People who follow orders *and* are skilled get fun/good stuff sometimes when I *can't* afford it. People that are skilled but don't follow orders get good stuff when I need to give them (some rambo taking out a hive for example). People who don't follow orders get an earful of insults and a turret dropped on them.

I'm really a total a$$ when I COM, I wouldn't want to be marine under me. On the brighter side I'm very good at following orders and not bothering the COM when I'm a marine, since I know what *I* would want from a marine.

Hang on! I usually go for JP instead of HA; and JP's are fun, aren't they? Oh, and I sometimes let the aliens get the second hive if I am fairly sure we can win anyway (lots of res/upgrades/good position etc). Oh, and I usually ask my troops if they want to play around with the aliens a while or finsih them, and whether they want to siege or rush the last hive (they usually go for siege though ).

Oh, and sometimes I sing: "Hey hey, we're the Monkey's, people say we monkey around..."
• Dan_ForeverDan_Forever Join Date: 2002-08-02 Member: 1054Members
Winning is only fun if it was a challange.

Losing is only fun if you didn't lose to a team far superior to yours (then it's just spawn, die, spawn, die, etc) or worse, a team worse then you (then it's just humiliating).

When the teams are equally matched, the games can be excellent

Im finding increasingly that the marines lose. its not fun. the commanders dont go take hives meaning that they pretty much have lost the game

people say when they start to lose they hand out the expensive guns, what ive found as a com is that you dont have money for chunkey things, you have one res tower and cand get enough cash to buy the heavies. then when u do buy heavies, they do and run off and die becuase they think they are invincible.

its not much run losing as a marine, the alies are FAR more powerfull than marines, an onos can take a REAL beating, a marine cant take 1/2 the beating.

all in all, i dont think it is much fun losing, especially as a com.
