How social is this game?

Hi, i consider buying the game.

I read it will depend a lot on close teamwork though and that immediately raises one question deciding whether I would like to have the game or not.

I know a lot of games based on Teamplay tend to be quite immature. You always have these guys wanting to put the responsibility for losing onto others and therefore get very annoying, complaining all the time, insulting, whining etc. This is especially true for complicated games, where Noobs really make a difference in the game, the best example being DotA which has one of the most annoying communities imho.

So I think this game is really interesting and i think it can be a lot of fun to learn it. But I know that you will be forced to learn it at first. Actually I dont want to deal with annoying teammates when its compeletely normal to need some time to get into a game.

So my question is what is the community like with noobs and how well tolerated and encouraged is learning the games basics? Or the other way around: Will the high demands on knowledge of the game basically wreck the games principle besides strictly organized "clan gaming" because you wont be able to use its capabilities fully with public gamers not playing it the way its supposed to be played?

Very social, you get little done without teamwork.
Noobs are usually directed to the explore mode to try out the game.
As for bringing it into practice, you highly depend on the patience and friendliness of your fellow teammates.
That said, we have a system where new players their names show up in green, they get affectionately called "greens".
Until you manually disable it in the game options it will stay green.
Most people I've met will happily help out the greens, as long as they keep communicating.

    Thanks.

Do you know how big the german community is? I can communicate in english if it is necessary, but having a completely german team would be a bit easier for me in terms of communication.

Well for a starters NS2 community compared to dota is like night and day. Sure there's some whining/raging, I mean it's the humans we are dealing here, but general attitude to new players is friendly. There are fairly good amount of rookie friendly servers too. Also if you don't wanna jump into action strait away you can start explore mode, witch is pretty much empty server to test things out.

About the learning curve. Sure it's high if you want to be the commander right away who builds and gives orders but if you can already play first person shooters you learn foot soldier role pretty fast. Alien side takes some time to learn but if you are not afraid of learning and keep open mind it's quite fast learning process (I mean compared to learning all items and heroes in dota). If you wanna learn commanding I personally think alien side commander got easier job than marine side (no need to drop medpacks and ammo to players).

About raging in dota compared to NS2. In NS2 individual player role is much smaller than in dota where dying boosts another team a lot. Sure dying is bad here too but specially at alien side you pretty much have to go kamikaze sometimes to stop marines so death is expected. Hell, I rage more if people just hide and try not to die when your base is under attack. :D

Sounds good to me. Is voicecom a must have or how much is it used in the game?

Voice comm is required pretty much for competitive play, They have an excellent built in system.

There are many germans, but on each server there is a high chance of english speaking ppl, so it's best to stick to english. Voice com is very important. Yes, you can get away without using it but it helps alot. In many pub games you can see players writing in the chat, but that takes time and is not efficient.

The community is very newbie friendly, nothing like I have encountered in other games. Yesterday there was a guy who played alien com for the first time. He let people know and nobody complained. Ppl even told him what he should be doing first and how he has to do it, where he has to click and so on.

ns always was a very friend open community even thought the first one had a high learning curve

The NS community was legendary for it's ease of use / friendly inhabitants

ns2 seems to be following this trend

Yeah, I met only two ass-holes so far and they were tryhards in the same clan who thought that nade spamming behind armories took skill. Everyone else is either really friendly or doesn't say a thing. The latter being the uncommon trait.

Simply put, I've been looking for a team based game like this for such a long time where instead of raging at your team or not helping out, almost everyone you will meet is a functioning, content member working towards a greater goal.

As to how important voice comm is, it's mandatory for a commander imo. As a grunt, you can get by without a mic but it's still a huge benefit to have one. Teamwork and coordination is key and having a mic only improves upon those fundamental concepts.

Fourth day playing the game, so my sample sizes is inconclusive for a proper overview: the community is actually really helpful and friendly. It's fun to just follow another skulk and coordinate chomp-fests, or ask someone to Gorge your Onos. Even people that don't have mics work real well together if you just use yours.

The community is definitely more teamwork oriented than, say, the Battlefield series. Slightly friendlier, and ... more polite?
If you've ever played Killing Floor on Suicidal or Hell on Earth difficulties, this is a close comparison: people are really forced to work together. It's fun, friendly, and pretty pleasant. I've not yet met any XBOX trash talkers (heh, below the belt jab, I know).

This game is very social. Majority of players have microphones. Every game has that annoying person that ###### all the time, but NS2 community is a lot more mature than most gaming communities that is for sure. A lot of old school players still around and there aren't many annoying kids because they are too busy playing COD. This game is all about team work. In public servers majority of players will listen to the commander and go with team mates.

This game is generally noob friendly, people help each other out often. Community is a lot more mature. However, if your a noob at commander and you try commanding in a larger server then people will ###### at you.
