Low FPS (~10), Lower settings don't help

Hi everybody,

At the ready room I am running around 10 fps. I have lowered all of my setting to the absolute minimum and have seen no improvement!

Here are my specs:

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.4GHz 3.4GHz
6GB DD2 RAM PC2-5400
AMD Radeon HD 6970

From my r_stats, my waiting for GPU is held constant at 0 ms. The waiting for render thread jumps around the double digits (<100ms).

I have confirmed that I have the latest drivers installed, and that NS2 does indeed choose my video card as the rendering device.

Any suggestions? I was a huge fan of NS1 and would really like to be able to try out NS2 at a playable frame rate. I would even be happy with 30 fps if I could get it, I'm not greedy!

Thanks,

Swibs

    Thanks for the prompt response!

I'm afraid that I am not too cultured on this topic. Am I to understand that this just isn't a good processor for gaming? That I am just out of luck even though I have met the recommended specs?

Would I be better off with either of the following:

    Intel Core 2 Duo 1.5GHz 1.5GHz

    Intel Core i5 CPU M540 2.5GHz 2.5 GHz

I also understand that it is extremely likely that I am just out of luck in this matter. If that is the case, I would like to be properly informed about this.

    Thanks again,

    Swibs

Intel Pentium 4 wasn't a very good processor in it's day compared to the competition. It is also very old, if memory serves me right it is from as far back as 2004? Making is obsolete when we're talking about playing modern games of 2012. NS2 is also a special case where it requires a very hefty Processor currently.

The Core2Duo and Core2Quad are also starting to show their age with being from 2006-2009, those are probably no longer available at your retailer anymore anyway. And the performance gain, although significant when coming from an Intel Pentium 4 platform, will pale in comparison the the iCore Intel systems that are available now.

If you are looking for an upgrade, you are looking at the whole system. The Pentium 4 platform you have right now can't simply be upgraded with just a CPU. It requires new memory, motherboard, CPU, graphics card and so on. If you really want to upgrade I advice you to look into the Sandy Bridge Intel i5 systems. Keep in mind that the newer Ivy Bridge Intel i5 systems are in my opinion not worth it compared to the 4-5% speed increase.

I'm sorry but I had to smile at the combination of a Pentium 4 and a Radeon HD6970. :)

If he has a Socket 775 Board which supports higher FSB (400+), Overclocking and Quadcores, he could try to get one of the E0 Stepping Core2Quad CPUs.

A Q9950 @ 3,5Ghz is more than suffiecient for NS2. Unfortunately this depends on many factors (board for OC, Memory which allows high enough clockspeeds etc).

He would probably be better of buying a new Mobo, Ram and an i5.

what motherboard do you have? To save you the hassle of reinstalling everything I think just about any CPU will be a MONUMENTAL improvement. I didnt even know P4 could run x64.
