and the marines who hate them
ok, we've agreed that 1ip, obs, phasegate + phasegate at hive is the leanest quickest start (as opposed to the traditional: 2ip, tf, 2turr, armory method). then resource the hive and then, build defenses in.
the only problem i have is, how the heck do you get marines to listen to you and actually do it on a pub without them all jumping up and down at base yelling "drop the armory and turrets you n00b comm!". comm chair needs an admin slap feature. like an ability to zap a marine the way a dog trainer zaps a dog... mmm

"This works. I will explain it to you when we win."
something like that. Don't flame em too much. You need those idoits to win. But say something that'll build confidence/curiosity.
You could also just order them around, giving them no time to question your strategy.
"All of you, Get to sewer hive and hold it until you build phase there"
Grunts that are on the move, dont have time to whine. Anyway once troops start to recieve a steady stream of orders, they start to get a feeling that their comm knows what he's doing and hence shut up.
good luck

--EDIT: just doublechecked. My bad. You do need an armory--
This is why i prefer alien now... too many idiots. -_-
Of course, the outcome of your plight depends on if they're really good shooters and take out the skulk rush if any. If they lied and all died, you're the one to blame .
I don't have problems with my marines not following orders 1 bit after that. I never seige the last hive, I always get them on getting me nodes after we have 2 hives, then I give them any/all toys they want. It's a sure-fire way of marines listening to you, you listen to them.
I against sound judgement, give out some med packs early in the game, why? Well, it lets my marines know I am watching them, and want them to suceed. In a match I would never do that of course, but passing out a few medpacks early on goes a long way to getting them listening to your commands in a pub.
Watching your marines gives another benifit, lets you know who you can trust to give weapons/welders to and have them actually use them right in mid-game. It rough on marines to spend 35 on a welder/HMG only to watch the guy die from going off alone. if you have a marine who is following orders, and doing a good job, give him that shotgun he asks for, he will put it to good use. I'll take a marine who has the gun he wants, knows his commander is listening to him, and is now dedicated to the commanders plan over a 4th sentry anyday.. (19 for sentry, 20 for shotgun) Also don't be afraid to say, "sorry, but I need the money elsewhere right now, no guns for anyone" when a marine who isn't following orders wants one. Oonce he leaves spawn, give it out to the ones who do.. Typically i reward the marines who hold spawn for me with first pick in weapons. I also ask, "jetpacks or HA", and choose what those marine(s) desire. If your team wants JP's, give them to them when possible.
I can't stress enough, let your troops know you plan up front, if they think you have a plan, they will trust your judgement and follow your orders.
Of course, this assumes that my men don't get eaten a lot. If that happens, they'll often start trickling out of base one at a time, and we'll lose. None of my screaming, begging or ordering will help now. Ho hum.

Were you double checking on a Linux server? Because for some reason, you need an armory to build a phase gate on those. According to the tech tree, you don't need one. On Windows servers, I'm pretty sure you don't need one either.
