Stuck on Authenticating, then Timeout

A friend gifted me NS2 on steam a few days ago, and from the moment
I booted the game, and tried to join a server, I have been stuck on
Authenticating, and then if just dumps me to main menu with the Timeout error.

I have tried the "Steam 500 fix" but to no avail.

Funny thing is, 2 days ago, it suddenly worked just fine, but then, after a few
hours, I got stuck on authenticating again, and it has persisted 'till today.

Is there any proper fix for this or any news on a patch-fix?

Side note: I live at a "School dormitory(?)" and I have to use a VPN to
get through to the internet, if I want to pay any games online, but I hardly
doubt that is the problem since I have no problem playing any other games
online

(I have been searching for the last few days for ANYTHING on the subject, but
I haven't been able to find anything :/ )

    BUMP this thread, I have the same issue. Some days NS2 connects to servers fine, other days I get the timeouts persistently.

    I personnally have the "Downloading mods..." that never ends... even if I try to start a local server it says it.
    All was working fine till today, now I can't start any game.

    Thats been happening to me the last 2 days now, it was working fine, and now wen I go to join either a game or explore, it gets stuck at downloading mods

    I also have this problem as well. However, it seems to happen mostly with servers that are near maximum capacity. So far, I have not had a single problem joining a game that only has only 50-65% of their capacity filled.
