Cannot play NS2 anymore.

I downloaded NS2 a couple of days ago and was playing just fine until recently when I quit playing for awhile and then tried to get back into the game and my UAC (User Account Control) popped up telling me that the NS2.exe file wishes to make changes to my computer through an uknown publisher. If I clicked yes it flashes black and tells me Cannot Render Device and then goes back to the steam library. If I click no it just tells me I cannot play the game. I found this log after hours of searching I will post it below.
I have tried reinstalling the game several times even going as far as searching for ns2 files in my harddrive and deleting them even after I used to control panel to delete ns2 from my computer. I also verified the integrity of the cache several times usually one file will be reaquired after I have attempted to get into the game with the error from above but still nothing works.
I am not very computer savvy so any detailed help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!

ThrillingHero,
1. Make sure you're running on dedicated videocard before starting the game.
2. Update (or downgrade) the videodriver (nvidia.com).

1. Seems to be working since it says "Render Device: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M (9.18.13.697)"
3. Try reinstalling DirectX by running DXSETUP.exe in ...\Steam\SteamApps\common\Natural Selection 2\redist\DirectX\

I updated the Nvidia driver through the website and also reinstalled Directx through the path you listed in the natural selection 2 folder. I restarted my computer afterwards and opened steam back up but it still comes up with the same error as before. Thank you for all the help though and anymore advice again will be greatly appreciated I did enjoy this game and I want to play it again.

I blame uac.
Ensure its an allowed program then I recommend disabling uac forever.. Most useless feature in windows ever created.

also, post your dxdiag. (see stickied posts for instructions)

I can't agree with that.

If you have a virus scanner and firewall, and your machine isn't used by children unsupervised... I really don't see where uac is useful in any light besides bugging you and getting in the way of each and every user action??

I've disabled it since day one of vista (shutters) and never once regretted it.

There is a point to keep UAC always activated at highest level. But I don't want to talk about it on the NS forums. I just want to say that on a properly configured system UAC will not prevent to play NS2 or other STEAM games, and I don't think UAC is the case for ThrillingHero.

ThrillingHero, try to use other driver versions: 310.33beta or 301.42 or 296.10 or driver from the Vendor's site.

How do I go about choosing other drivers that will be used by NS2? Also I tried to disable UAC and the pop up did not appear it just went straight to the Could Not Render error pop up and force closed. I will post my DXDIAG shortly if that will help also. Thanks!!

make sure to try previous versions like metroid says, I recommend sticking to whql certified versions.
Also make sure when installing to check that box that says something like "clean install" - whichever one that says it removes all instances of previous versions.

Also, does device manager show any yellow errors?

I installed the latest Nvidia driver and did a clean install. I reinstalled NS2 afterwards also verified the cache afterwards all files were correct and still recieved the same error. There are no yellow icons in my device manager either. NS2 is the only game that this happens for every other steam game works just fine but everytime I click NS2 Could Not Initiate Render Device appears and then goes back into Steam. Anyway thanks for all the help so far and hopefully there is an answer out there.

Now we need your DXDIAG.

Attach or post a DXDIAG information log file, this provides UWE with your system specs, driver and OS info:
Click on your Windows Desktop Start menu.
In winXP you want to find "RUN", in Vista/7 you want the search bar at the bottom of the menu.
Type in DXDIAG and hit Enter
A window pops up, Either a Diagnostic will auto run or you need to click on a button: Run DxDiag now ~something similar to that.
When the progress bar is done, Click on the "Save All Information" button, you can either copy paste it to the forums or post it into a website such as http://www.pastebin.com and post the link here on the forums.

Uninstall current driver from Windows Control Panel, then try those (always use Clean Install):
Latest beta drivers, try them first: 310.33 beta
Previous generation driver WHQL: 296.10 WHQL
First version from the new generation: 301.42 WHQL

Maybe there is some sort of setting in the Alienware software or driver software that Intel graphics is set into the priority, that prevents NS2 to access dedicated Geforce 460M, I can't say for sure because I don't have the notebook.

Do I unistall the video driver or the graphics driver through control panel? Or do I uninstall everything that says Nvidia?

You can unistall everything that says Nvidia. Unless you downloaded extra software from Nvidia. It will all be reinstalled when you download the install files from Nvidia.

I had this problem just once. Couldn't run anything Direct3D... all I did to fix it was unplug my monitor (DVI cable) and plug it back in... for some reason DirectX had hung or something. Not sure if that helps anyone out there.
