A little more time to pick a comm please?

As soon as the game starts it's total chaos until we get a comm and a plan together. I'm trying to remember which game it was, but I think the older battlefield games used to have a system where everyone would nominate themselves for commander and then the most experienced player would get the job. That type of system would be perfect for this game. It would give the newer players a chance to really learn the game, and you're always guaranteed to get a comm that is the most experienced, and actually wants the job.

UNLESS we want to really get down to making an "Merica" system and get an electoral college involved to really make it a fool proof process.
I think there should be a ~10-15-second "warmup period" perhaps, where people nominate themselves and people get to vote on the commander.
Might be a bit of a distraction to code since UWE has more pressing issues right now though, so I bet it'll be a mod before it gets in the game.
The current system is fine, but since the first 2-3 minutes are kind of crucial, it's hard to come back from no commander for that period of time if the opposing team has one from the start.

This. And we must make sure the candidates were born in... uh... on Earth... and wherever the Kharaa's from for the khamm, and they paid their fair share of taxes in the past.
TF2 Lobby has a system where any player can declare their team ready or unready. Once both teams are ready, a 5-second countdown timer starts which can be cancelled by a player declaring his team unready. This may not be viable for pubs due to trolling potential, but a similar warm-up period would give teams the time they need to designate a initial commander. Perhaps for a team to be declared ready, a player must first 'Take Command' and then his team's readiness would be determined by him alone. He may even spawn closer to the command station, or in the chair itself.
Or, as a secondary option, have the warm-up period go on indefinitely until a player steps into the warm-up command station and readies his team.
Getting into the chair to start the game and then out leads to the exact same situation we have now, so it wouldn't at least make things worse.
this is very chaotic
even if everyone had a blazing fast computer, we need at least need a minute or two between rounds for various breaks
I've asked for a 1 minute warmup time that can be changed in the server config if you want it longer / shorter
On quality servers you will sometimes see admins restart the round once everyone is on a team
This sometimes leads to a different person commanding, but otherwise it has the intended effect (everyone starts at the same time)
A lot of games are decided 100% by how long it took both sides to get a comm. A lot of games have a very weird dynamic of 3-4 minutes of 3v4 or 4v5 while we wait for half the server to get out of the rines portal and finally accept they have to play a game as aliens. This severely disadvantages the less popular team as they are down a man in the first crucial minutes where map control is often decided.
I have the same experience pretty much every map.
I join the server, join a team, and it is 2v3 for the first 1 minutes.
It ruins the early game, and people also miss one of he best aspects of it.
Also, AFKers need to be addressed.
Games start too fast. Some people are still loading the map, others in the ready room. Nobody knows if somebody wants to command. Seeing how important the early game is, it wouldn't hurt having a bit longer warm-up time.
Can you imagine if every comm had to go through what the US's commander in chief did?
