A little more time to pick a comm please?

As soon as the game starts it's total chaos until we get a comm and a plan together. I'm trying to remember which game it was, but I think the older battlefield games used to have a system where everyone would nominate themselves for commander and then the most experienced player would get the job. That type of system would be perfect for this game. It would give the newer players a chance to really learn the game, and you're always guaranteed to get a comm that is the most experienced, and actually wants the job.

Ya it might be nice to have a system like the pro NS2 stats where there is a pregame time and then once every each team types ready the game starts.

I think potential candidates should give speeches first, then comes the baby kissing and after that we can elect our commander AFTER which he gives his victory speech. Then he can get in the com chair.

UNLESS we want to really get down to making an "Merica" system and get an electoral college involved to really make it a fool proof process.

Almost 1:1 post that I made in the suggestions forum during the beta.

I think there should be a ~10-15-second "warmup period" perhaps, where people nominate themselves and people get to vote on the commander.

Might be a bit of a distraction to code since UWE has more pressing issues right now though, so I bet it'll be a mod before it gets in the game.

The current system is fine, but since the first 2-3 minutes are kind of crucial, it's hard to come back from no commander for that period of time if the opposing team has one from the start.

This. And we must make sure the candidates were born in... uh... on Earth... and wherever the Kharaa's from for the khamm, and they paid their fair share of taxes in the past.

I agree. The game's countdown starts as soon as there is 1 player on each team, which may lead to very awkward games where the first two minutes are 2v3 or 3v4. On top of this, if nobody wishes to command immediately, your team's tech and income get delayed significantly (assuming the other team instantly starts commanding).

TF2 Lobby has a system where any player can declare their team ready or unready. Once both teams are ready, a 5-second countdown timer starts which can be cancelled by a player declaring his team unready. This may not be viable for pubs due to trolling potential, but a similar warm-up period would give teams the time they need to designate a initial commander. Perhaps for a team to be declared ready, a player must first 'Take Command' and then his team's readiness would be determined by him alone. He may even spawn closer to the command station, or in the chair itself.

Or, as a secondary option, have the warm-up period go on indefinitely until a player steps into the warm-up command station and readies his team.

Oh, yeah, that was suggested as well. The game doesn't start until there's a player in both comm positions. However, that also has trolling potential (get in hive to start game, get out).

Getting into the chair to start the game and then out leads to the exact same situation we have now, so it wouldn't at least make things worse.

so on most servers the game starts before most people from the previous round have even loaded the map

    this is very chaotic

even if everyone had a blazing fast computer, we need at least need a minute or two between rounds for various breaks

I've asked for a 1 minute warmup time that can be changed in the server config if you want it longer / shorter

On quality servers you will sometimes see admins restart the round once everyone is on a team

This sometimes leads to a different person commanding, but otherwise it has the intended effect (everyone starts at the same time)

Considering how long we wait for the map to load, I think waiting an extra 30 seconds to a minute to make sure the game actually goes well is very worth it.

A lot of games are decided 100% by how long it took both sides to get a comm. A lot of games have a very weird dynamic of 3-4 minutes of 3v4 or 4v5 while we wait for half the server to get out of the rines portal and finally accept they have to play a game as aliens. This severely disadvantages the less popular team as they are down a man in the first crucial minutes where map control is often decided.

This is very needed, I'm tired of 1v2/2v2 games while the rest of the server loads up the map, and wasted time when people decide if they want to comm or not. I'd really like there to be a minimum of 3 players per team before the round starts, as well as a short warmup period (30 seconds would be fine) at the start of each game but honestly any improvements to make the start of pub games less silly would be greatly appreciated no matter how minor.

I also feel this is REALLY lowering the quality of this game on pubs.

I have the same experience pretty much every map.

I join the server, join a team, and it is 2v3 for the first 1 minutes.

It ruins the early game, and people also miss one of he best aspects of it.

Also, AFKers need to be addressed.

There definitely needs to be some sort of pre-game delay to get the games set up before they begin.

    +1

Games start too fast. Some people are still loading the map, others in the ready room. Nobody knows if somebody wants to command. Seeing how important the early game is, it wouldn't hurt having a bit longer warm-up time.

Yep, games start way way too fast. There should be a simple system that makes the game start faster the more people join the game. Say, the time to start is 5 seconds per player in the server. Each player who joins a team cuts the timer by 5 seconds. So on a 20 person server, it takes 100 seconds to start(starting when both teams have a player), but if 10 people join then that time is cut down to 50 seconds. Then 5 more people join and the time is cut down to 25 seconds, which has probably already passed so the game begins.

The problem I see more often than not isn't that there aren't enough commanders... it's that no one wants to do it. Cause it kind of sucks. More often than not you hear someone going "God damnit! Fine, ###### it. I'll do it. You ###### better listen to me."

Just like Squid said, this can easily be done server side. There are quality servers that have this.

30-60 pregame time + comm vote would do wonders for early game pubs.

Can you imagine if every comm had to go through what the US's commander in chief did?
