I really hope NS2 gets it's "DayZ" mod.

Just saying...ARMAII, while successful, for many years was pretty much dead, with sales having nearly stopped after release. The community support it with small mods, like this, kind of.
Granted, games have had mods like it before, that make people buy it, well, hell, Half-Life itself is a prime example! It was a great game, but Counter-Strike made many people buy it.
Basically, I am hoping the modular nature that is both this games greatest strength...and weakness(Lua performance issues, ease of hack, scripting, ectera), ends up paying off for the devs...
And someone creates a mod that makes everyone buy the game....Bohemia said sales of ArmAII picked up more than they were on release when Day Z came out...500% increase! And many of said DayZ players not only played DayZ but went back into the ArmAII fold...increasing it's player count quite abit, even non-DayZ is what I mean got a boost.
Granted, I think the types of mod NS2 has may be limited due to the Engine as well...I doubt we'll see any large, 64 player type games going on.
Still, hopefully some insanely dedicated mod team out there will make something along the lines of Cry of Fear, which was released earlier this year for Goldsrc, HL1, and got over 500,000 downloads already. An impressive feat!
I'm just saying, this seems to be the type of game that mods will be the reason it thrives, not the core game, not to say anything bad about it.
Expect a lot of horror mods, for sure!

But yes, I predict that some modders might make something amazing from Spark. It's incredible that UWE just dumped us their entire engine for free, and it'll definitely pay off in the long run.

Mustaches are the only mod needed to take a game from great to manly.

Well this is embarrassing.
I don't think you really can compare a game like this to ArmA2 and DayZ. For one, ArmA2 wasn't meant to be an all time best seller - and it wasn't, and while I'm not saying NS2 blew it out of the water in terms of sales (cause tbh, I have no idea) it's definitely aimed at a more mainstream crowd. Because of that, a super-amazing mod isn't really required for this game's success. No doubt we will get some cool mods being created, but none of them are necessary to keep this game "alive".
DayZ indeed boosted Arma sales, but to be honest, core arma players are disappointed with what happened to Arma 2. There are barely any servers running anyway for core game, mostly just for dayz, so it's not like Arma2 magically revived and there are tons of people in it...no, there are still just few servers on with players.
While DayZ, is living and kicking... it's actually kind of dead. The point of the game was breached, and became a deatmatch mode with 60 players where you start with basic items and have to find your gun asap. The only gimmick are totally bugged modified civilians, that runs towards you with silly mime looking makeup, they are totally harmless.
Right now, many people are having problems with connectivity and optimization.
I can't really complain about any of both, as I do have pretty new PC, that can max this out with more than 60-90 fps left for play.
Also, flawless connection experience, even since build ~200.
So, if you want "DayZ" mod for NS2, you want total death of NS2 and digging a grave for it. People won't know what NS2 is, they will know what "Modname" is.
Don't forget, if mod will not run correctly due to some modding issues, where Spark can't really deal with but it's crucial for that mod to function, people will call "Modname" awful due to it being just bad, not understanding what Spark was made for in the first place and know it's limitations or some other stuff.
Only good thing about DayZ is, it boosted sales, so Bohemia Interactive now has some nice money boost for their future productions, that are loved by me and my friends who bought Arma and Arma 2 on their release dates.
The ArmA engine is amazing for what it does. It can run maps up to a size of 100x100 sqaurekilometers, 10km viewdistance, millions of objects, AI that dynamicly respond to situations, coordinate with other squads, very realistic bullet physics. With the servers you need to run NS2 you can easily run + 60 player servers. NS 2 engine on the other hand looks decent, but got awful performance. Of topic, but the sale boost DayZ did is rather small for a company selling software to professional militaries.
The point is : the current NS2 Engine is never be able to create a open world-mod like DayZ. Every engine got their own limits.
I think the OP is talking more generally, not just a mod with game mechanics like DAYZ, but a mod with popularity like dayz. ARMA 2's dayz, Half Life's counter strike, etc. All it needs is that one revolutionary idea, in the form of a spark mod, to boost the sales of the base game tremendously. I mean, something like 2 years after its release, ARMA 2 has been in the steam top 10 best sellers for what, like 8 or so months now?
I'm not going to say its how UWE imagined their cash flow being sustained, but I doubt they would complain.

There are already a number of people working on a horror mod called Sanity.
