Server list clogs router, forcing restart

Hey, just wanted to report that nearly every time I open the game and refresh the server list a few times, my entire internet connection will begin to chug, eventually preventing the server list from refreshing at all and making it nearly impossible to connect to any websites, etc. until I reboot my router. Once I connect to a server I usually have <50 ping and no issues even after hours of playing.

I haven't noticed this problem with any other games I've played recently.

Modem/Router model: Netgear CG3000D
Connection speed: 30Mb/4Mb

Unrelated to the above; I also crashed earlier with no option to save a crash dump. I had been connecting to a server, I was alt-tabbed and someone playing on the server that I was connecting to sent me a message on steam. When I alt-tabbed back into the game I got this dialog and blackscreen: image

EDIT: Is this the correct place to report bugs, or should I be posting them somewhere else? After reading some of the stickies it looks like this might just be a community support forum to help people fix common issues/etc.

Your router might just not be powerful enough to process all the connections that are created when the server list is updating.
Try lowering this value in Steam settings:

I'd start from the bottom of the list. If it works with the lowest value, keep trying higher values until it stops working again. The lower the value the slower the server list will update.

Didn't you hear.. this game needs a pro router and a dedicated fiber optic line /sarcasm

Same issue here. No other games manages to screw up my connection with just the server browser.

This is a problem with the netcode, (related to the red plug of doom). Its getting fixed in 229

Basically NS2 for some reason is sending a bajillion requests to the router, and it clogs it up (same thing happens with red plug during game, the packets over flow the router)

229 has some netcode rewrites and should fix the problem. If the issue still occurs after the update, let us know.
