How many of those are just awful?

It is funny because I was just thinking "man I wish I could see the black armour hands in game" then I checked the workshop and what do you know, bam it is there. Plus it is SO GOD DAMN EASY to DL and install mods on NS2. Seriously, it like instant.

I agree it is very easy to use, and the way the game only runs mods allowed by the server is great also that it installs mods that you don't have if you try and join a server with them is even better.

Yeah, things are incredibly smooth now it is crazy.

I remember the good old days of downloading a ZIP file and then unzipping it into the wrong dir.

Only NS2 is fast like that. The only really modable FPS I played recently is Arma II and it's still hell.
I'm happy that you need 2 mouse click and a 1sec-restart game to load a new mod

To be honest, for all it's convenience. Uninstalling mods is... Well let's just say the Workshop is seriously lacking features to have some kind of control over that. Also I would love to see actual categories instead of having to rely on tags on the items, but still throw them all into one big box of stuff...

Well, the mod workshop (and mods in general) are largely useless. Clients can't enable any mods because servers don't whitelist any, and servers can't enable any mods because UWE doesn't whitelist any.

Basically, NS2 has no mod support as far as most users are concerned. I've never even seen the Flayra Spinner loader, after having it enabled for days.

EDIT: The only mod I've managed to use is the server browser one, since that is unaffected by consistency checks.

Well that must be a local thing on your end, cause the crosshair mods and texture mods seem to work fine :|

Do those mod trigger consistency checks? If so, they would only be available on servers that whitelist them.

    Only lua is checked currently

Hmm, that seems to leave some obvious gaps. Super bright models with giant spikes sticking out of them and that sort of thing.

I don't see why the Flayra Spinner would involve any code changes, so something must be wrong on my end to prevent that from working... Perhaps a re-install is in order.

Indeed it does leave obvious gaps and that spinner is just a simple modified *.dds file so it should work... Unless the server you play on have modified their consistency check to include those files...

Kouji, I installed your sights the other day. Alas, they still have not appeared in any games. Now that you say they should, I am wondering if they were installed correctly. Hum.

Did you activate them in the mods menu ingame?

you should not only install them, you should tell the game to actually USE them in your mod menu.

I think we really need some kind of "howto install" thing on there, it's quite easy actually but also not quite clear. This is basically the howto :)

-Subscribe to the mod you want
-Start up the game (which will download the mods you're subscribed to and also keep them up to date)
-Activate/deactivate the ones you want to use, using the ingame "Mods" menu

    Well.

    That makes me feel dumb.

Had no idea they had to be activated in-game. If it still doesn't work, ill let y'all know, otherwise assume I'm oblivious to the obvious.

Mine was activated with no effect, so I don't think it's that. Corrupt install, perhaps? I'm not seeing the spinner on any server, and come to think of it, the spinner is displayed during the actual connection attempt, before the server has had any chance to do consistency checking...

Hehe, well you aren't dumb, just ignorant to something that isn't clear at all in the first place. I blame the Workshop, like I said it is seriously lacking in basic information and usability (just a big list of stuff instead of neatly organized :( )
  • TailorTailor Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13927Members, Constellation
Well, it might have been easier if I was completely naive. As it is, being aware of the white list requirement made me just assume none of the servers were allowing it making me not really look deeply into the issue.
