<div class="IPBDescription">Latency issues exclusive to NS2</div>When ever i try to play NS2 (and only NS2 -- I just got off TF2 with a ping of 15 and logged into NS to have 2300) I have 999 ping on the score board, and MUCH higher in the net_stats. I also get the little red disconnect sign flash up every now and again.

I have tried this on Virgin media 100mb fiber line and a 5mb Sky broadband line. (Virgin line going through a Netgear router // Sky line going through Skys own router)
Server location makes no difference on the ping, and it happens on EVERY server i have tried so far.
I have tried disabling my firewall, it makes no difference.
My FPS is at ~60 static.
System specs:
i5 @3.4ghz
nvidia 670gtx
16gb ram
120gb SSD

What I have found however is if I Alt-Tab out of the game to come for example check this forums then I go back in my ping on net_stats is at a normal level, but as SOON as I move it returns to 2000+

Below are some screen shots for your viewing pleasure.

<a href="http://imageshack.us/f/22/nslag.jpg/" target="_blank">Laggy Net_stats</a>
<a href="http://imageshack.us/f/545/nsnolag.jpg/" target="_blank">Normal Net_stats</a>

Any help in this would be massively appreciated.

P.S Before anyone brings up the Telnet 'fix' I have attempted it and i get the cannot connect to the host on port 23. That is on both internet connections that i have tried to play on.

    Sky is <a href="http://bskyb.lithium.com/t5/Sky-Broadband-Gaming/The-Cause-of-the-High-Pings-TS3-etc-issues/td-p/529736/page/22" target="_blank">known to have issues</a>.

Not sure about your Virgin line but are you by any chance using them both from behind the same router? Try doing a direct connection to your computer to see if that helps.

Separate routers, in fact they are 120 miles away from each other ;)

That is truly very odd then.

Could you post up a dxdiag log along with your log.txt file?

    Where is the appdata folder?

I'm having the exact same issue, it will play smooth for a little bit then start spiking very heavily.

I assume this has to be an issue with the netcode bottlenecking at some point.

I also have the 999 ping/red plug problem when I try to play NS2, usually leading to my game freezing. The Game Was Working Fine Before The Nov 2nd Patch. I tried a bunch of stuff: reinstalling the game/deleting appdata folder, disabling firewall, unblocking ports, changing the steam max pings setting, updating my router firmware, and the only thing that worked was bypassing my router entirely. I also have no ping problems in any other game.

Today I was able to play on 2 servers that consistently had 15 out of 16 players on them. Once a 16th player joined, my ping rose to 999, and if they left within a few minutes, my ping normalized. During the 999 ping my net_stats Ping raises to over 3k, 'Average Recv' value usually doubles from normal value, 'Last Recv' value rises by more then 6 times the normal value, and 'Choke' value also rises higher than usual, erratically up to 100% for short bursts. I can also play fine on some empty servers but any server that has 16 or more players seem to always give me the high ping/red plug.

I live in the United States, running Windows 7, Creative x-fi sound card, Geforce gtx 260 sli graphics cards, Asus M4n82 Deluxe motherboard, and use a Linksys WRT54GL router.

Murtaugh, are you sure the problem are not the servers? Since you are using net_stats you should be able to see the server rate. 30 is what it should be, once you dip below 25 then issues become apparent.
  • MitMit Join Date: 2012-11-04 Member: 166980Members
I tried deleting the appdata folder and it worked for a little while. Now that Murtaugh mentions it, I think it started lagging/red plug once the server filled up.

I was comming marines fine yesterday and then my net_stats ping went all the way up to 30,000.

It is definitely something to do with the netcode ever since release, because I never had this issue in beta; and I'm not having issues with any other online games.

Even old servers I used to play on KKG, All-in, etc. still exhibit this problem.

If this problem occurs for only you in the server and when it fills with players, it would be very helpful if you made a performance log and demo.
Before joining a game, type record in the console (~ key ) then type p_logall

both the plog and demo will be in your appdata folder.
Please zip them then link it here.

Another thing I forgot to mention is usually, my ping doesn't start going up until I join a side. Not always, but usually, if I stay in the ready room my ping is normal, then starts going up the instant I join a side. Also, usually, if I hit f4 when my ping is high, once in the ready room it will slowly go down and normalize. Then joining a side again makes it go up once again.

    I recorded some demos and included the p_logall logs. <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/file/z4zyq3k8bj563f7/999ping-demos.zip" target="_blank">http://www.mediafire.com/file/z4zyq3k8bj56...9ping-demos.zip</a>
The first demo is me playing until my ping raises and the game freezes. Second demo is me on an empty server where my ping stays normal. Third demo is me playing on a 12 player server with 11 players, with my ping being normal until the 12th player joins and the 999ping thing happens. Fourth demo is me joining the game then leaving to the ready room, watching my ping raise then lower.

In reply to Soul_Rider; nearly every server I'm not able to play on has a net_stats server rate of 30.

Edit: Oddly enough, the one server I was able to play on, for an extended period of time today, had 20 out of 22 players in it (usually i cant play on anything over 16) and had a net_stats server rate fluctuating between 17 and 25.

I've done some more testing and I've found that this ping problem occurs on servers that have more than 16 active players. I played various 20+ man servers yesterday with the typical 999 ping problem; but when I switched to a 16 player server it worked fine.

I played on two different 16 player servers without issues. I played an 13/18 player server without issue until the server filled up. I will continue playing tonight to see if it is repeatable. And do a p_log on it as well...

p_log is meant for performance related stuff.
To catch bugs and internal network oddities, its better to use "record" command. (you can add a name like this: record networkissues)
But the size of the files will become large in no time so try to capture stuff quickly and then zip the files.

Where is the appdata folder located? I know where the ns2 folder is but cant find one labeled appdata. I never had a problem last week, now im getting this high ping and connection issues. This is really annoying though as I cant even complete a game without lagging out. Also its strange but people talking using the mic while I am lagging out are always in real time and not laggy at all. THey sound fine, while my screen is lagging to all hell.

NEW THING TO TRY FROM MAX!

Try net_log 3 in the console (~ key) while youre having that issue
And then report back the (now very long) log.txt
Preferably paste that log in pastbin.com and then link it here!

    or here:

Here is my log.txt from net_log3, split into two parts because the upload limit was 500kb:
    part 1 - <a href="http://pastebin.com/kVTypXSj" target="_blank">http://pastebin.com/kVTypXSj</a>
    part 2 - <a href="http://pastebin.com/yKGcHBEB" target="_blank">http://pastebin.com/yKGcHBEB</a>

I started the log when I joined a side in the game, which is when my ping starts raising, and the log stops when my game eventually froze from the red plug/high ping.

I tried out everything in that thread, nothing seems to work. I have a Linux based Linksys router (wrt54gl), so I also tried third party firmwares but those didn't help either. I can still play every other multilayer game i have just fine, with no ping problems, just NS2 isn't working. I've mentioned this before i think but I disabled my routers firewall, put my computer in the DMZ, forwarded lots of ports, but nothing works accept physically bypassing the router entirely. I'm not sure what else to try.

Asking a dev to review your demo..
But something tells me this is due to some setting in your router.. Though I dont know what.
The nov 2nd patch was a small server side patch.. Do you mean 1.0 on oct 31st?
  • MurtaughMurtaugh Join Date: 2010-07-31 Member: 73376Members, Reinforced - Shadow
The first time I played the release version was during the day of November 2nd and I played on at least 3 different servers and didn't have a problem. I'm not sure what time the patch came out that day but the next day (Nov 3rd) when I tried to play, I got the red plug/999 ping. I just assumed it had to do with the patch but it could have been a coincidence. I had also played off and on in the alpha and beta without a problem, though I had not played in a month or two before November 2nd. I also did not changed any software or router settings between November 2nd and 3rd and my router is using all default settings.

I never had this issue before,,but recently I get connection probelms and an empty server browser.
even restarting the game does not fix it.

the red plug symbol is flashing, too.
