Need more incentive to be a gorge

or an alien for that matter
Coming from NS1 into this game I was really looking forward to playing the gorge again. The first time I played alien we took out a node and I switched to gorge to plop down a resource harvester. I quickly realized I had no idea how to build one and then learned that there was an alien commander doing all the building...

Today I was playing alien again and we had taken nanogrid. I figured I ought to hole up in there, so I went gorge, set up a bunch of the sticky block things in the hall, and set 3 hydras on the walls. I figured this would hold up a couple marines if they wanted to take nanogrid and buy us some time to build there. I had 1 marine (at the beginning of the game no less) meandor over my little wall and blast the crap out of me. The hydras did absolutely nothing to deter him (and yes, they were mature).

The gorge can't build anything
The gorge can't defend anything
The gorge (without bile bomb) can't attack anything

You options as an alien are:
skulk - default and free
gorge - useless until end game
lerk - not much more effective than skulk (no armor, little attack, still kinda useless until end game) (costs 30 res, which takes a long time to accumulate)
fade - awesome
onos - more awesome, but awkward as all hell to move around the map.

I think this is why a lot of people don't like playing alien. If you don't like skulk then you're not going to have fun for 4/5 of the time you're playing. It takes soooo long to save to get a fade, and if you die, you have to start over. Right now I enjoy playing skulk and fade the most, but I need more than being fast and melee.

I am having a lot of fun playing; it's a great game. I just think it can be a greater game.

edit: there is a good thread here discussing what the gorge could do in conjunction with the commander "Gorge the Gardener" http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...amp;hl=gardener

the gorge is a bit situational at the momement. you need to block off a narrowish hallway with your clogs, and leave yourself a little hole to spit out off down the button (or even so a skulk can fit through)

place 3 hydras on the ceiling and a little further back so that they cannot be shot at range (usually best to use a choke point that is around a corner).

if you heal the hydras while they are being shot they will never go down, unless 2-3 marines are focus firing them all at once.

and if there are 2 marines just spit while they are reloading and heal while the hydras are being shot at.

works very well - but of course a lone gorge is no match for 3 or more marines. so its a good idea to have a skulk hang about to ambush them while they are distracted and worn down by your hydras.

and if the commander is good he'll back you up by putting down a crag and/or a whip :)

Early gorging helps out commanders immensely. Getting those two RTs that second earlier, the hive and cutting off a choke point long enough for your team to get into position is devastating. If the buffed the gorge anymore it would be on par with the ridiculous sentries and MACs that the Marines can lay down early game and i already have to deal with that BS as an alien. I don't want to have to deal with it as a Marine.

The Gorge is probably the single most important life form at the moment. Onos charging around without a gorge? Cut his battle presence by 50%. Exos out and no gorge to combat them? GG.

Except it's ridiculously easy to take out a Gorge running after an Onos. When we're 4 to 8 friends playing together, we always focus the Gorge first, which is done for in a couple of seconds before we continue on the Onos.
Gorges need to be buffed in one way or another.

It helps, but isn't really necessary. Having most of the Skulks harassing the marines from building up a third or fourth extraction point early in the game is enough for the Aliens' commander to expand a second Hive.
