1-tick servers after a couple of hydras, and sniping marines from 50m away from that vent in Rockdown, yep those were the days.

What I don't miss - the early wallcrawling

And guarding stupid MACs all day is way more fun, right?
MAC only building was the first major thing that was scrapped, it was tested and none of the alpha/beta testers liked it.

The whole game turns into a babysitting mission for both the marines and commander and everyone will start pulling their hair out when a MACs dies, gets stuck or just gets in the way.
It's just another hoop that players need to jump through and just slows down the game, especially when MACs can be easily assassinated by a few skulks.

They had to make the game give you 3 MACs at the start to "balance" this.
Also the CC built the MACs, haha, good riddance to that nonsense.

Giving the player less control over the gameplay in this style of game is just silly.
The current game gives much more freedom between letting the marines decide how many need players to build and how many need to guard depending on their style. It is a superior, tried and tested design that has worked for 10+ years.

Among major other things that were bad and got scrapped as time went by:
-No phase gates (because maps would be small)
-This casualized version of blink @ 2:25: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wz8bNXGfoM
-Lerk having a shotgun style spike attack
-Lerk having Bile Bomb for a few builds
-Hydras costing 10 res each
-Free Hydras limited to 3, that die if the player stops being their parent gorge or does not re-gorge after death
-Gorges placing mini-cysts

All good games have a lot of cut implementations of existing features, because that's evolution.
Look at the Starcraft 2 beta compared to now, it's night and day. Hell, even comparing the retail version to the current patch is a huge change, even in the SP department.

Forcing terrible core mechanics to work through band aid fixes is what bad game devs tend to do, and they end up with a 1-2 gimmick console game that hits the bargain bin in 2 months after launch.
I'm glad UWE did not force it and rush the game in 2010 or 2011 after the Fall 2009 fiasco.

Your schtick is getting a little old. Is there anything about this game that you do like?
