Forwarding suggested ports not working, 17997 TCP required

In several places we are being advised to forward ports 27000-27100 TCP/UDP and 1200 UDP. This does not work for me. Forwarding these ports results in the red plug of doom with a black screen.

If I forward ports 1025-65535 TCP/UDP I can connect to all servers and maintain a stable connection indefinatly. So the game is obviously using a different port.

I checked my firewall and the game maintains the following ports while im on a server right now:

52580 UDP
52581 UDP
52582 UDP
17997 TCP
63403 UDP

Neither of which are remotely near the stated ports.

I'm fiddling with the firewall as I type, and guess what?
Forwarding 17997 TCP does the trick. Removing this port = red plug of doom.

Why is this not documented? Is this an oversight or miscommunication? Please clarify.

EDIT: I take that back 17997 does nothing.
I need to forward 50000 - 65535 UDP, because everytime I start a new isntance of the game or connect to a new server some random ports in that range are being used.

please fix, this is a rather large hole in my firewall and i'm not sure i like that.

That are an awful lot of ports...

If you are just playing the game (and not hosting a server) you should not need to forward any ports. Can you provide some more information on how your network is setup?

I'm behind a router that establishes a PPPoE DSL connection. I can give you more details if you want, though im sure it isnt needed since it is working if i forward all those ports.

The router is set up for NAT using the 192.168.0.0/16 subnet. I don't know how ISPs in other countries do this, but this setup is what's being used in Germany almost exclusivly. Also, I can't think of a single game that worked without me forwarding some ports. Sadly noone seems to care about UPnP either.

Router is 192.168.1.254, my PC is 192.168.1.2. No other IPs were active while testing.

    Do you need anyting else?

EDIT: I just checked my settings because I got the red plug of doom once again, it looks like the port range is even bigger. For the previous game several ports from 49000 - 50000 UDP were used.

EDIT2: Just for clarification of the symptoms, I can find servers in the browser normally, I can also connect without issues (precaching, shaders etc), but then the fun starts because either
    [a]
right when I would drop into the game, the screen turns black and I get thrown to the main menu with a "Timed out" message, or
    [b]
I can walk for 3-20 seconds until i get the plug of doom.

I face the exact same problem!
Always the red icon of doom :(

I've forwarded all the ports that were posted here:
    27000-27100 TCP/UDP and 1200 UDP

I'm behind a NAT-Router that uses UPnP. My ISP is located in Switzerland and I'm using a Thomson TG784 Router with full admin access.
The only thing I've found so far helping me play the game is joining a game and then wait for the disconnect and instantly rejoin the game via serverbrowser (since the "retry" command in the console gives me an authentication failure).

I take everything back. I humbly ask for forgiveness for barking up the wrong tree.

I got a Thomson Speedtouch ST546v6, and using the fix that's floating around this forum seemed to work.

@Mugumaster: Telnet to your speedtouch > login/pw is the same as in the webinterface > connection bindlist > should show "GAME" somewhere with 27010-27011 > connection unbind application=GAME(UDP) > connection bindlist > entry should be gone and you out of trouble.

I had to install telnet, but google is your friend. c:

Does the server browsers stays? When I click play after a DC it has to load a whole new list again. I have the Authorization Failed or Server Full message when retry-ing, so I'm interested in what you did. Once in a blue moon it works and I can play on a server, but 99% of the time DC. Sadly I'm not allowed telnet acces via my LAN..
