Crash Before Start

I actually just downloaded ns2 (been waiting anxiously for almost a month) but when I clicked 'play' it just shows launching natural selection 2 then closes (steam is still open). My icon turns green indicating that I'm playing the game but it turns blue after about 15 seconds. I have Dx9, etc. As far as I can see there's no log of whats happening. In task manager, I don't even see it launching. I've spent about 5 hours trying to get this to work. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
Thanks.

The Patch came out. The change log didn't say anything about not launching. I downloaded the update and exactly the same thing happens.
To help the devs find out what might be causing this, could you do the following please:
Attach or post a DXDIAG information log file, this provides UWE with your system specs, driver and OS info:
Click on your Windows Desktop Start menu.
In winXP you want to find "RUN", in Vista/7 you want the search bar at the bottom of the menu.
Type in DXDIAG and hit Enter
A window pops up, Either a Diagnostic will auto run or you need to click on a button: Run DxDiag now ~something similar to that.
When the progress bar is done, Click on the "Save All Information" button, you can either copy paste it to the forums or post it into a website such as http://www.pastebin.com and post the link here on the forums.
Attach or post the contents of the NS2 "log.txt" file, this contains useful error messages for the UWE devs:
To get to the file, press windows key + R, fill in "%appdata%\Natural Selection 2", hit enter.
You can either copy paste it to the forums or post it into a website such as http://www.pastebin.com and post the link here on the forums.

There's not a ns2 folder in app data. everything is in my steam apps, where steam put it. Even in there there's no log.
hmm
really hard to tell whats going on without that..
Do you get any form of an error or minidump?
If not i recommend deleting the game cache through steam and re downloading everything again.. Let us know!
REGARDLESS though, we still need your DXDIAG report as Zaggy mentioned above!

I installed the directx that came with ns2 and now dxdiag doesn't work. I'll se what I can do though. I have another computer I can try tomorrow, but I don't have it in front of me.
I think so too, I'm re-installing a bunch of things, ns2 being one of them. fingers crossed.

Oh, I wasn't even thinking about wine. But yes I am. The problem I was having was a directX problem. I understand that wine is not supported, although I have seen that people have gotten it to work. I guess since its a wine problem, I must look else where for my answers. Thank everyone for their help.
Feel free to keep this thread active and seek others' help?
Some have definitely gotten it to work.. but i dont know how. Impressive to me.

Yeah they have, I read the article and that error is what I got. If I got it to work I'd love to help other people do it as well. I could just install windows, but thats a big pain.
The main difference in this issue is that I use Windows XP SP 3, which according to your requirements is acceptable.
I have tried re-installing the game and also verifying the game cache along with deleting the shaders folder as you suggested in the "known issues and possible fixes" thread.
http://pastebin.com/SjpjWdnN, here is my dxdiag message.
I can add that I recently formated my computer and I could run NS2 then, but I was using Windows Vista.

I was able to get the game to run, using wine which doesn't apply to you. All I did to get the game to run was install visual c++ 2005 redistributable, which makes sense because the spark is written in c++. try that and tell me if it works.
I don't know if sp3 has it, but try downloading visual c++ 2005 redistributable.
