Why this game should have never been released...

really, that´s not a fun topic like I usually make
Played a decent amount of matches these days and the current situation is just horrible. If you want to play marines, everything is ok (yep the are a little op in the end) but don´t dare to play alien! Normal play is just not possibly because no one wants to com. So I go com and regardless of which question I ask no answer is coming.

So has really everybody forgotten how to write? Or why can´t no one afford a mic these days?

Oh, and by the way: Look for the spawn of the marines and tell it the com!

Wait, this game should have never been released because players on servers (i.e something UWE can do nothing about...) don't communicate? That's some strange reasoning you've got there. Also, some servers foster better communities than others, my personal favourites are HBZ, OAG, Thirsty's. If you really want more communication you could also join a clan or gather.

But you really can't blame the game for players not working together, lol. And to be fair, the situation in NS 2 is WAY better than in any other FPS I've played in recent years.

You can spot spawns as a commander, as a marine commander you will see some infestation splashes through the FOW every time an egg is created in a hive room. As an alien commander you will see and hear structures being placed and marine movement through the FOW. (The structure placement is like a blue-ish nano-splash in the FOW)

    Awesome logic

I blame the players for being born. UWE made the right decision to release though.

It's actually kind of depressing how silent everyone is. I talk all the damn time but on the whole very few people acknowledge each other. I suppose we'll have to wait until real community servers start popping up!

Most players are silent in online games, that's just how it goes. In the long run I think the people more likely to stick with the game will be the ones who are more communicative though.

As for learning to comm, I recommend jumping into Explore Mode(under Training) and testing it out. You can't expect your teammates to answer your questions when none of them know how to comm themselves.

Oh come on guys, it seems that all of you played pre release (like me) and there wasn´t a single server I´ve played on without some talking players and the majority of the none-speaking players used the textchat instead.

That´s why my logic isn´t as abstruse as you guys think. All games I played since the release were damn quiet (=> no one talked).

I don´t want to get an answer to com questions (I´m not a good com but a average one I think). Just an answer to "normal" questions like were is the spawn (oh, and btw I don´t want to use the exploit things like spawning eggs or other crap to get an idea were the enemy spawns) or what updates do they prefer most (e.g. someone want spore first or bile bomb instead?).

Ok, I think I get this now.

The game shouldn't have been released in order to keep the player population low since the low population mostly used mics.

The game was released cause UWE said it would be released on the post date. Although i know every person that has played, worked or been involed with this game knows it's far from being done.

The logic behind this thread is just a joke haha, can't stop laughing. Seriously.
After the new patch has been released and I was able to join servers I had so much fun. I've played until 5am (have to go to school at 7am) on the official UWE servers (since my beta favorite ones like KKG, all-in and others were full) with lots of new players. I was the comm for both marine and alien teams and even if the players are bad, by being a good comm and giving them orders / telling them what to do works always good. Even if they don't have mics, or don't communicate much YOU can still tell them what to do and explain stuff if they ask...and I loved it:)
IMHO it just takes a good comm:)

It took a while in NS1 for people to get used to the fact that a mic is virtually mandatory. NS2 players will get used to this too and realize that not having a mic is a big disadvantage.

I had a fantastic game with a great alien com (VeNeM, I believe) last night. Guy was on top of his own building work while simultaneously using his birds-eye view to give direction to players. Helping us out with waypoints, letting us know where he wanted us to be, telling us to retreat when he thought continuing a push would be counter-productive... It was a fantastic experience with a bunch of strangers who've never played with eachother before managed to act like something resembling a team.

Needless to say, with such an awesome commander, we won. People seem to think the alien commander is useless. Well, maybe in competitive play where you've got plans and strategies and excellent communication, you don't need a full-time comm. But in a pub, a great comm like that, keeping everybody on track and informed of the situation, that's priceless.

Most games don't really need a mic. They don't require that level of coordination, or are too fast paced to talk, listen & plan. Or have just 2-3 simple paths so combat is concentrated there anyway.

The need for communication will make some players get mics, and some to type at the very least. But having experience and a mic really helps a team coordinate and win.

Just did it twice, very gratifying, coming from a losing position to the win. 2 other players joined with mics, so it became less lonely on the air waves =p

LOL.... What i see alot is : Many good players go aliens for the kill - none commander -

And many many noobs go just Marines because is easier to start learning....

50% of the times half the marines are green :PPP

It is hard to get most players to start communicating, but what works the best imo is to be nice and encouraging. If you want them to do something or say something ask them directly, since in my experience if you keep it too general then no one will answer. Instead of saying "someone go to crossroads" say "player x can you plz go to crossroads". Stuff like that helps and eventually they'll start to slowly communicate. I have commanded ALOT after the release and players really seem to appreciate my style.

Most people have the mindset and skillset to play Marines.

Far fewer have the mindset and skillset to play aliens, but that changes with experience.

Experience that comes from playing the game.

So how can we learn the skills we need without it being released?

The game's learning curve is still a huge chasm of DEWM. The thing is, most of the new players come from other FPS games that are not so much focused on teamplay, synergy between commander and soldiers on the field, and overall team communication. It will get better once they get to know the game more and more. But the fact of the matter is that initial threshold will always separate new players from the others. I mean I see a lot, and I do mean a lot of lonewolfing going on and players just testing out stuff trying to learn for themselves. This can work of course, but it is always better to ask the more experience players for advice about why you should do some things, but avoid the other things.

Add to this that marines are easier to understand, coming from a none NS background. As it is basic FPS with some objectives. Also marines are more capable to fortify areas than aliens are and the alien gameplay is a lot more confusing. This is why I'm actually confused with the "balancing pie-chart" being almost balanced with aliens having a slight edge. Most games I've seen in pubs end in a marine win after a long and tedious stalemate, because once marines get EXO/jetpacks, they tend to have more pushing power and its easier to play as a team on marines with the interface and commander being designed like it is...

Just keep swapping servers till you:

A - Find some beta testers.
B - Find a server where people are using their mics and not just spouting stupor.
C - Find a server where people listen to the helpful advice you give.

Yes, more people need to use microphones or at least communicate, but there is nothing the developers can do about that.

I dont talk or type unless im comming or it is absolutely necessary.

We have a commander that does the talking and instructing. I dont need to talk, I need to follow orders and report critial info, for example, a hive drop.

What do you want? want me to ask yo how your day was or how your moms doing?

Keeping game related worked for me for years in NS1, and im sure it will work in NS2 as well.

I hear that some console games are easier. Perhaps you could start with one of those and work your way up?

Personally I love commanding the aliens team. It doesn't have as complicated of a tech tree, but you're kept busy nursing your cyst chains and listening for marines all over the map. Sure against good teams it's a huge hassle, but the worst thing I've encountered thus far are alien players who are incapable of listening to the most simple orders. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've dropped two Onos eggs and a gorge or two in our main hive, explicitly told the people who got into them that I wanted them to group up, ninja charge past any structures and kill the marines Observatory, Power, and CC in that mandatory order. They then proceed to split up, derp their way into heavily guarded marine emplacements that are not strategically important, and die horribly while the gorge egg either goes unused or someone grabs it and puts clogs around the main hive and camps.

I know my microphone is working, it's just that some people are probably more interested in playing a FPS with Pandora blaring while blissfully ignoring all the sound effects in Natural Selection 2. If you haven't figured it out yet, listening to the ambient sounds is the key to either winning the game, or losing horribly. That's why the alien team gets silence, can 'skulk' completely silently even without silence, and why it is vitally important to listen and work with your team. Two skulks are better than one.
