Environment Maps, Aka Skys

I've been messing around with Terragen and some other programs lately and having fun. Here's some panoramas a few of the space-themed skyboxes I've made (they are 512x512 but could be easily sized down ...):

Sinus Magnus

I was thinking the same thing myself. Mars of the future, partially terraformed, and the Kharaa invade a terraforming station there ...

gz man, those are some really good terragen renders, the second set of renders are so damn crisp, you got any tips on how to make these mars-type landscapes in terregen?

r3men4nt, are you using the latest version of Terragen?

Milkman: Terragen comes with a surface called Martian Plain and and several Martian atmospheres. I just used a little more haze than normal.

Here's one I did messing around one day with various settings. I call this one Outpost.

r3men4nt, remember that these images are 50% the size of the skybox ones, this would obviously make them look crisper.

Yes you're correct, Carbon14. And I'm initially rendering them at 960x960, then scaling them back to 512x512 (or up to 1024x1024). So they come out a bit crisper that way than if you render them at 512x512 to start with. At least they do for me.
• Carbon14Carbon14 Join Date: 2002-07-29 Member: 1025Members, Retired Developer
Don't you mean scaled back to 256x256, I have never come across any skyboxes with sides 512x512.

Hey either you know how to make skyboxes with 200X more detail than current ones, or you have a lot of rescaling to do

can i use it for a map?
• MrBatmanMrBatman Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 7176Members
256x256 = Half-Life size
512x512 = Quake3, 3DNA Lo-res
1024x1024 = 3DNA Hi-res

Ah, ok.

I made this one sort of like your outpost one, what do you think?

Whoa pretty nice skies, how do you make them? with 3dsmax or something?
I would love to use that "Valles Marineris" on my map maybe... if it is possible =)
• MrBatmanMrBatman Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 7176Members
Nice, Carbon14.

I use Terragen. Would like to get Bryce though. And I can size down some of the skies for people that want to use them (soon as I get some time...)
