Some Questions before i buy the game

Hi,

I'm thinkin bout buyin the game, but i couldn't find any information if there is some sort of system that motivates you to actually play it, resp. play it good.
Like stats tracking, some sort of (Matchmaking) Ranking System or Unlockables...

I know that some people just don't care about such stuff but I do.
This game seems to be pretty teamplay dependant, which is a good thing in the first place, but if there are absolutely zero consequences in winning or losing, dying or killing, I don't know if this game will work out pretty well in the long run.

From my experience, team based games need nowadays some sort of permanent system which encourages the players to play non-retarded, otherwise most public games are pretty onesided and not very enjoyable.

Furthermore it is hard to keep a decent playerbase today if there is no permanent and continuous system that makes them want to improve their e-penis (like a rank, K/D-, W/L-ratio).

This is by no means any sort of flame or bash post.

I just don't know the game at all, just watched some gameplay-vids and want to decide if I buy this game or not.

Thx guys!

NS1 and NS2 have been very popular without any of these "features". I think you should watch some vids or something to see what the gameplay is like. It is a very enjoyable experience.

Winning motivates you to play well.

Their is no bonus for killing more Aliens, putting up an extractor, or killing a hive other than it helps the team. As of right now their is no ranking system or unlockables. What it does have is a strong competitive scene with 6v6 teams scrimming a lot.

Between games there is currently no stat tracking or unlockables (officially).

However within every game your team collections resources, some of which are rewarded to you. These are spend on new guns or upgrades, so if you die you have lost that upgrade.

For marines, you can buy a jetpack, a mech suit, shotguns, flamethrowers, etc. Dying causes you to drop the gun (or lose the suit or jetpack). Someone else can pick up the gun, but the gun will disappear if not picked up quick.

For aliens, you can evolve into bigger lifeforms. Each lifeform is a class basically. There is a healer/builder, an assassin style lifeform, a heavy siege lifeform and an air support lifeform.

    Stats are collected by <a href="http://ns2stats.org/" target="_blank">http://ns2stats.org/</a>

In game though there isn't anything like you describe at the moment.

At the moment, no, there is no ranking system or unlocks.

UWE has specifically stated that they do not want to add unlockables into the game as they want all players to be on the same footing with skill being the deciding factor, not who has the most prestige points. (I'm not pretending to speak on their behalf though)

That being said, a ranking system has been discussed and there are a large number of people who support a ranking system based on win/loss and other team related variables.

Also, www.ns2stats.org is a mod developed to track players individual K/D, Win/Loss, guns/lifeforms used and so on, and is currently (as far as I know) being modified to work better with the new 1.0 release.

Anything is possible as the devs are going to be releasing free updates for years to come, as well as not charging for any DLC.

In addition to all this, there are already mods being created (Combat only, Marine v Marine, Remake of NS1) that customize NS2 vanilla for a wide variety of gameplay experiences.

Long story short, what you see in gameplay vids is not all that you get, and NS2 will be evolving over the course of the comming years.

    Hope this helps!

if this is really a key-motivation for you, join a clan and play it competitively: there were tons of official tournaments in the beta already, even with prizes.

I think generally, we do not want the kind of players who are fascinated by their e-penis.

I agree, I have also noticed that reward systems tend to run people off once there is nothing else to achieve. I'm not against them, I just think that the potential ceiling of such systems creates the same boredom albeit slightly delayed.

If you are goal oriented then set your own goals revolving around the support of your team. I think that you will find a very different environment in both the player base and the game play of NS.

I can't speak for NS2 just yet (because it is currently only being played by the old-school / invested players) but when I was a NS newbie 10 years ago, I was amazed at how well the NS universe lead to creating team players. It is not like your run of the mill CS/BF/TF games.

I say all of that to say, if you enjoy team play, the NS2 IS the RIGHT game for you. If awards are added later, then it only makes it that much more interesting.

Not needed, this is a team effort. Unlockables and ranks favor lone wolves. sorry but no, nothing like that in this game. there are other games out there that have that system, however, I think you should give this a try (but hurry! pre order offer ends in 4 hours!)

Give it a go, you will not be dissapointed!

Oh dear God, no, everything the OP listed is what's wrong with games nowdays. Instead of playing the game because it's FUN, you play it to pass the time with meaningless goals that give you a false sense of doing something else than the obvious, which is, wasting your time!

NS2 doesn't need those mechanics. Why? BECAUSE IT'S FUN TO PLAY.

    EDIT:
Disclaimer: I'm not saying a grinding system is bad, though, but in 99 cases out of 10, those systems BECOME the game instead of just being a nice perk.

There is only ONE reward. SATISFACTION AT TRAIN ROLLING PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!

    <img src="http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg546/GodofThunder17/trainroll.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

But on a more serious note, the game is just dam fun. You can S#@% yourself as marine from stealth aliens sneaking up behind you, big aliens teleporting in front of you or running around a corner and seeing this huge monster charging towards you. Or you can enjoy flying around the corridors lobbing grenades at aliens and blowing the crap out of them. Then there is the EXO............ And as for aliens there is just something seriously funny about chomping humans.

I mean I personally love the fact that there are no stupid fake reward system, or that I have to buy my gear or costumes. It makes games feel so fake. It seperates NS2 from every other game that just feel like cash cows for the game companies.

    And the price!!!!!!!!

Also, being good at NS 2 is really satisfying, getting those kills on skulks with shotguns, actually getting kills as a skulk, rampaging early on as a lerk, or as a fade, etc. There's a lot to learn and master for the average gamer.

You earn your reputation/stats in the community, it might take a while and you have to stand out with some extraordinary skill or just to being all round good player.

And my e-penis grow ever larger after each skulk/marine kill

Natural Selection is not about stats, matchmaking and awards. It is about playing, making the right choices, being good enough to contribute to your team and take part in the teamplay in order to win.

I think most are like me when I played NS for the first time. I never won any single fight. So the incentive for me to play was essentially "oh dear god how can like 99% of the server be better than me with such awesome killscores? I've got to try and keep up!" Now, I score around 1:1 on average though it varies widely from game to game and who I'm playing against (and with!). And if you don't improve, OTHERS WILL, and you'll have a much harder time competing!

And the best thing about this is that it is FUN!

first thing i thought was: I should flame this guy, he doesn`t understand nothing about the satisfaction of real teamplay.

this is stupid... i am sorry.

this game is highly modable. there will be so much mods in the future, like ranking systems and other stuff.

please check NS2 Combat Mod in Steam Workshop. Maybe this is what you are looking for. its still under development (alpha) so if you really need rewards and rankings, wait some month and check back :)

    @OP

By the time you're done with your first NS2 match you won't give a damn about unlockables or statistics again.

Nothing really to add to this.

Ok. Just a few lines ;D

NS 2 - the game itself is supposed to make fun. You shouldn't play a game to get achievements and better items than others, just because you spent a heck of time playing. It's a skill based game and it should stay like this.
The most fun is anyway the teaming with different players every single game. Everybody has to get used to each other and talk to each other as well to be able to play a successful match. Every match is different.

    Greetings,
    Silvereye

This is exactly what i was lookin for, thx.
I hope it works and there is a chance that something like that will be implemented or modded soon.

    Game is preordered...

    Thx for that many answers.

I guess some of you might got me wrong:

1st: With "Unlockables" i meant only visual enhancements, not balance breaking bonuses like a better starting weapon, armor, ress, etc. BUT those are not important for a good game, just a funny perk to have.

2nd: Besides the stuff most people said, stats tracking is imho a VERY important part of encouraging pub random teamplay. I can tell from my past CS experience where unmoderated servers where pure ###### chaos, with lots of TKs, barely any sort of teamplay and dumb ###### who just went full retard all the time.
Or playin DotA back in the days without banlist and DotALeague, which was a leaver and feeder fest.
Both games/mods were taken by itself very good, but without some sort of overwatch many games were ruined by imbeciles.
Via ServerRanks/DotALeague people were encouraged to play good even if they were together with other guys they didn't know and they would probably never see again.
    Which is a good thing.
I mean Stats-Tracking wouldn't be in pretty much every competetive game, if it were entirely useless.
F.e. via Stats-Tracking i could see if my commander plays that ###### for the first time or if he knows what he is doin, or who i can rely on and who has an abysmal game record.
This is from my point of view pretty important stuff for random pub matches.
And if you find a clan you would like to be matched against enemies on an equal footing... Roflstompin might be fun some times, but it will ruin the game experience in the long run...
Thats why i think some sort of matchmakin and rankin/stats-tracking system would be very great.
