The 130 or so that went up today are just the start :). The other 50% will go up tomorrow. All major regions are covered, except South America which we are still working on. They are all 3.5Ghz Sandy Bridge.

wow. did you build them all yourself (carpenter indeed), or is this a deal with ns2servers?
I dont want to see the electricity bill of all those servers. Nice to see those servers going up. I guess that will be enough for launch or is it not? I am not in the beta and so I have no idea how many servers are needed but 260 total seems to be quite alot.

HA, good one UWE :P Nice to see so many extra servers ready to go though.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
To be fair, Mineshaft is a lot better than it used to be balance wise. It's still fun to play in pubs, not so much in a structured setting.
Yea but it's not 24/7 material like summit or tram imo. There's your de_dusts and aztecs in every game, but mineshaft isn't one of them in NS 2. I always play on servers with map vote and I almost never see mineshaft even voted on. Performance wise it's a hard-hitter.
From the twitter pic they seem to be 16 player servers, which I think is a good idea. I prefer 16 or 18 player servers, cause they run better and the gameplay seems to flow better. I don't get why the servers we have now keep upping the player number, cause that kinda negates the performance optimizations and the gameplay is just rather silly, especially on those 26-28 player servers.
Edit: wait... are they really mineshaft only? That seems silly. o.O
To each his own, though I definitely agree 18 is the sweet spot and everything above that is just crazy. UWE is clearly setting the standard with 16 player servers, not a bad thing. Game experiences differ heavily based on player numbers, so it's actually quite important that UWE takes an official stance on the 'advisory' player count for best gameplay experiences.

I would assume it is to push the limits of the hardware and see what it can handle. Especially after the improvements in 224 I am sure a lot of server ops really wanted to see what was possible. This is why that 100 person server pops up from time to time.

Only a few of them.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Makes sense.
But what is the reason for only running one map on some of the servers? I always want to change maps after at most 4 or 5 rounds, so I'd properly find it rather boring after a while if I could only play on one map.

Good to know that you didn't forget us in south america :)
I too noticed that there are a lot of single map servers (Summit only, Tram only, Mineshaft only). I don't agree with this rationale, new players will likely get bored of the same map over and over.
Keep the game new and exciting, like a layered present for new players to continuously unwrap. Keep them rotating.
I also feel that if new players stay on the same server and discover the game together they will have a much better experience. NS2 is a social and teamwork based game. Having to change servers for a different map, or for variety, will ruin this experience. People won't develop and learn together as easily.
Let people discover cool mechanics together, each map a new "OMG" moment. A new commander discovers the 'wonders' of turret farming, a new place to gorge and clog up, and new vents to explore.
Holly ###### thats a lot of servers ! Never expected so much. But why is there no single middle european server in Germany or Austria ? Does it depend on the sales per country you have made ?
Good job !
PS:I would raise for at least some servers the player count to 18.

Very nice.
Where did you get all that server hardware? Did you rob the NSA?
wow. did you build them all yourself (carpenter indeed), or is this a deal with ns2servers?
EDIT: The names!
We must have some funny names for them!
Gorgies cunning feet
Big onos belly
Powernode neighbor
Skulks savored bits
