I keep missing ..
Hey..

Now, FPS's are my 'game' .. but I really didn't think I was that bad

I was in-game and realised I was 0 kills 26 deaths ..
A couple of players who'll remain nameless started getting a little elitist but that's another story (and hopefully some people will develop a little more tollerance when NS2 is go-live)

but again, I didn't really think I was that bad.. I get a ping of 70 - 120 which I'd expect would be ok
my FPS are 30fps at the menu and they're not too bad ingame I think (will update with a real value soon)

I regulary die before I know wtf has happened .. I've died many times popping my head around a corner and back again

As skulk I try to bite for a hit instead of spamming biting but marines just never seem to be there when my mouth opens

I can only hope my dire scores are down to some wierd fps/ping combo and not down to deteriorating senses and reaction times as my brain cells continue to die

As marine, my score's are marginally better.. but that's probably down to long corridors and observatories than anything on my side

Another good argument for not having RFK...its not always about kills

I've seen players (like myself) having bad K/D....but contribute to the team in other ways. Not only via Gorge/Lerk...but by constantly rushing bases and forcing beacons etc....These also help the team win.

There is a hit reg issue going on right now in 225. As far as hitting as a skulk, it's just going to take some practice on your part. Try to predict where the marine is going to jump and only bite when you know you're going to land a hit. Make sure to use the walls, try not to stay on the ground so much or charge head-on. Also, ambush as much as possible. Never charge into a pack of marines unless there are other skulks with you.

I've played Natural Selection 1 for years, NS 2 for about 200 hours, I still have sh**ty scores.

Welcome to Natural Selection, where your team victory matters more than your own score.

The game forces you to play differently. . .
To be able to hit enemies dancing around you in a circle you'll need to crank your mouse sensitivity way up

If your mouse/mousepad is poor quality this is going to make even more problems because how you may have trouble making minor adjustments to your aim for far shots

Positioning is also huge in NS
The more patient player usually wins a fight

If you want some easy kills get a shotgun and stay within running distance of it from a phase gate so if you die to can just go pick it back up

For alien go fade and fight only long enough for a marine to shoot 1 clip and get done reloading before you run
(or go celerity Lerk and always open the battle with gas)

All other times when your tech is down stay with other players and spread out during a fight or camp and wait to ambush before pushing to the next room

also a good point is that K/D is maybe at most a 3rd of the game. . .
a team that gets mowed down constantly can still pull out the win with good strats

ah I agree with that .. it's not all about kill death ratios .. but still .. 0-26 in any language/form is too bad

If I were to take a guess, I'd say difference in pings make a huge difference ingame..

I've never ever seen players 'jump' due to pings.. it makes me think there's a queue system that doesn't suite lower speeds/higher pings or possibly too much info is being sent

(btw, I'm not discounting lack of skill on my behalf at all!! .. just hoping it's more something that could be fixed .. I'm in a land where reliable broadband is a distant dream.. that's yet again another story though)

NS2 is a hard game. Everything moves really fast. Encounters are over so quickly you can feel like you aren't learning anything.

I just wanted to point that out. I feel like most new players would fare better playing first time in CS etc, Quake (has a skill scaling system) and other games.

Hint: You should really, really follow people and stay behind them. Not only do people appreciate when someone covers them, it's also a great way to stay alive and get frags yourself.

    Lol.

It basically comes down to your experience. The more you play, the better you get. How many hours do you have in NS2 and NS1? I would say every hour in NS1 gives you maybe 0.5 of an hour of NS2, in terms of experience. Anything less than 500 hours and you are going to be substantially behind quite a large percentage of the beta players. Play more get better, same as COD same as BF3 same as NS2.

*grin* ok .. 0-26 seems to make people think I'm new to NS

I've been playing NS since it's NS1 first raised it's head .. I've played all flavours with mods and been in a few NS clans
I've also played alot of CS/TF/Tribes/AOE

I've seen the 'hit registration' thread and might have something to do with it .. but as a skulk .. this is what I typically see in a fight as a skulk

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=playe...nZ_ih2KJQ#t=89s

This marine should have been bitten about 8 times by the skulk recording the youtube (and probably once or twice by the other skulks)

build says 225.. but I've been getting this for a while

You said you have 30fps in the menu. Obviously ingame it's gonna be less than that, which definitely puts you at a huge disadvantage.

There is two problems I think.

First there is no skulk vs. marine balance goal or balance methodology (balance teams,..) as far as I know. Basic skulk vs. marine balance can go where it wants, in particular it can favor marine badly in recent builds.

Secondly melee fights in NS2 are a mess. This is due to several factors and is partially inherent to the genre (i.e. cannot be fixed). Something that should be improved is the slippery collisions, now if you jump toward a marine while pressing w it's almost impossible not to slide past the marine. The way the engine deal with collision with wall is to redirect your velocity in the surface direction, so that you slide along surfaces, maybe removing this sliding mechanism when touching marine could be a solution (need to be tested obviously).

Not sure if you noticed the medpack spam or not, but that makes sense that he stayed up that long.

If you're 0-26 then you're doing something fundamentally wrong, performance issues or not. Odds are you need to be far more conservative in picking your engagements. Before you commit to an attack, there are a couple things you have to consider:

    - Where is the marine's attention? Is he distracted or is he prepared to defend himself immediately?
    - How likely am I to survive this? Does he have a buddy who will kill me even if I succeed?
    - Is it worth the risk? What do I accomplish by killing this marine?

Whenever possible you want to stick to defensive tactics. Favor ambushes over rushes. Take out marines who aren't being watched by their teammates and/or are focused on another target. Work directly with your teammates whenever possible. When you start drawing enemy fire, duck back out of view and let someone else clean up. Remember that their clip is limited, often you're more likely to survive an approach by dodging around on the wall than by taking the shortest path.

Yeah, that player has damage numbers turned off so it's hard to tell, be he does land most of his hits.

Hey OP, I've seen players with 150-200 ping play fairly well in the past, but I don't know how much FPS they were getting. With the recent netcode optimizations in b224 and 225, you should have an easier time than before, except for the hitreg issues that came with b225. I assume that you've already optimized your hardware, Windows, and game settings. Since you're an experienced FPS player, I assume you've already worked on tracking, twitch aiming, and playing at a comfortable sensitivity. As a skulk, you should be playing smart by using obstacles as temporary cover and wall-jumping in early game to close the distance. As a marine, your tracking with a LMG should at least be decently accurate vs skulks. If any of these things are false, please let us know. If not, I mainly suspect that low FPS is the reason for your troubles. Either that or you're joining the losing team mid-game, when the opposing team's victory is nearly ensured.

If you could be so kind as to list your hardware and benchmark your in-game FPS, it would really help to pinpoint your problems. An average FPS of 30 is playable with 50 ping, which I know from personal experience, but I'm not sure concerning higher ping.

The game is erratic and inconsistent in many regards and thus takes quite a bit of getting used to. Also I suspect that the bite cones are a bit off in 225, I have gotten several bites which looked like they would have been 75dmg in 223 but your only 50 or 25 in 225.

This probably is somewhat related to the poor hit reg in 225.

Its probably somewhat related to having to build your own engine from the ground up with a team of 5 people.

You wouldn't have seen medpacks that landed on him during that time, and some of your hits might have been glancing as well. You should really turn on the numbers for better feedback on that.

While we're on the topic, there should really be a more flashy visual indicator that a marine just got healed by a medpack so the skulk knows what's happening in the midst of combat.
  • VolcanoVolcano Join Date: 2011-07-27 Member: 112496Members, Constellation
That was a welder healing him not a med pack you can hear the other guy pulling it out and holding it down and it tagged his team mate
