Connection Times

<div class="IPBDescription">Really long loading times</div>I've tried searching for this problem on the forums but the only thing I can find is when people join a server, it takes them ages and then the game doesn't run well.

My problem is that when NS2 loads, I'm at the main menu within about 10 seconds of hitting play in Steam. I then go to join a server, click to join, and then it takes upwards of 10 minutes to load the map and join the server. Once I'm in it plays brilliantly. The only problem I'm having with performance is the loading time.

This problem has been present since I first played the beta.

Considering other people have been complaining about loading times of a minute, I don't think this is how it's supposed to be behaving.

Any help would be capital.

Not sure what the problem was, but I deleted the game and then re-downloaded/installed and after some more problems, and then a validation of the game files, it seems to be running a lot better. About a minute per load on each map the first time.

You could try reducing the texture quality from high to medium, and disable your anti-virus system / whitelist NS2.exe.

Are you running on an SSD?

The textures had nothing to do with it. As I said, the game runs brilliantly. Never saw it dip below 60fps. I'm running on a GTX 480. I had already dropped the texture quality to low anyway.

I'm thinking it may have something to do with all the updates. Sometimes games that have been updated over the top of over and over run badly. Had the same problem with another game. A fresh install of those games reduced loading times from 5 minutes to 20 seconds.

I'm running on a regular HDD at the moment, but I've ordered a 256GB SSD to replace it with and just need to wait for it to arrive and then for exams to be over so I can take the time to reinstall Windows.

It's usually the first load that is slow, it is preloading/caching everything to make sure ingame it is all smooth. If you have lots of memory, it will stay in there so on map change or NS2 restart, it will load a lot faster. The initial map loading will probably be addressed at some time :)
