People forget so fast and paint anything pink that happened in the past. Redemption was the most hated upgrade in NS1. And not only because of Devour-Redemption-Onos (Was this fixed later?)
Anyway. I agree that feign dead has a bad implementation. The game mechanic of saving your life and stealing your opponent of the earned kill is never a good idea. Redemption isn't better in this regard. No upgrade should have such a mechanic.
This said, feign death could work if the mechanic would be changed. If you could use it to trick marines into the believe that you are dead and not as a cheesy life-saver. It could easily be tweaked.

Just allow the alien by clicking mouse1 when to come back to life.

Disallow moving while feigning. (You are the corpse. Not some unintuitive camo-invul-alien.)

AND give the corpse a fix amount of health (equal to maybe 20 bullets from the LMG or one shotgun blast.) If the "corpse is killed", you are killed.

This way feign death needs to be used actively and situational. It would be easily counter-able by marines for the cost of ammo. It wouldn't work if everybody uses it. (Every marine would just shoot at every corpse.) But it isn't the only shade-tech and as soon as marines got paranoid and wasting ammo, aliens would switch to silence or camo. In the meta-game, it would work like the spy in TF2. If your team has to many spies, the enemy gets paranoid and shoots at everything. If your team had no spy for a long time, the enemy will be easy to surprise.
The only thing I would say needs to change about feign is the fact that your invisible even when near an obs or being scanned. The only reason I even say that is because it seems odd that you cant camo near an obs but you can be invis with feign.
If you're relying on feign to escape every time you go to fight you will die every single time as long as the marines can aim. Feign is a fail safe not a god mode.
Now even though I disagree, while writing this I had an idea for an upgrade to replace feign.
After taking X% of your health in Y seconds you regenerate Z% of your health over Q seconds.
X% - probably something like 50% for skulks and lerks, 75% for onos and fade, and somewhere in between for gorgies. Y - around 10-15 seconds probably not really sure Z% - Once again not really sure, 25%-50% or so depending on lifeform less for fade and onos and more for the lower lifeforms. Q - around 2-3 seconds, unsure. should be a short enough time to give you the health you need to turn the corner but not too short so if your in the middle of a room the damage you take is more than what your regening and you die. These numbers probably are all wrong just so you know >.>
It would give the same function as feign, save your life if you were close to escaping, without the odd invisibility and extra body falling out of your pocket. It would also need some type of visual or auditory signal so marines know what's happening. The primal scream sound for lerk in NS1 comes to mind, as well as some type of alien style nano shield effect.
But yeah anyway I'm bored if you couldn't guess I'll see myself off now
EDIT: I actually decided to make a thread in suggestions because I kinda like the idea now >.> here's the link if you want to comment no need to clutter this thread. http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...howtopic=122001
Manual feigns kinda like the spy in Team fortress classic would be lol, would give the ambush a whole new meaning. But yeah, once even 1 marine saw aliens using feign they would just automatically start firing at every corpse they see

Also resurrected lerks have 15 health, no armor I think. Pretty sure they die from a single pistol shot. With the JP nade spam which usually occurs when sieging FD is hardly a problem.

+1. You really can't complain if you've not tried it yourself. This sounds like a "I only play marine and this is OP" problem.
Feign death can be a godsend those times you've just died around a corner with an expensive critter... But 50% of the time the marines gets you anyway because they know you are feigning either by experience or by the obs showing exactly where you are crawling to, or just being lucky or you were to stupid to get far enough away. Feigning with no other aliens to distract for your escape will get you killed.
Beyond that, I like feigning when I try to take out a exo as a skulk. most of the time its so hectic they won't notice that the skulk they just killed is still munching on their legs, giving you 2-5 more bites before you die properly. I guess that can be annoying, but most likely they don't have celerity or carapace or they've got 3 hives and its looking grim anyway.

Corpses disappear 3-5 seconds after they've ragdolled in NS2. If corpses stayed throughout the game all over the level (that would be cool and a huge performance hog), this might've worked. However, that idea isn't viable right now.
in cs there was an option to turn off corpses, but they never dissapeared. If you wanted better performance you turned it off. I personally liked to keep it on as a stark reminder of choke points/kill zones. Obviously the pile of bodies tends to tell you something about what might be ahead of you =).

That's .ADHd for you.
