wanna know who was responsible for this?

drumroll....

me! I emailed Tycho after realizing that they hadn't ever mentioned NS in a newspost, and therefore didn't know about it.

He was taking his sweet time. It's his fault. He could have done it a lot sooner.

Besides, he's not going to come all the way to NYC to beat me up, is he?

Mad? Why would I be mad? PR is PR. It's not like if you make a posting I don't get that big raise from nothing to zero...

I think, however modestly, that this should be added to my list of "peon points", along with getting free pro hosting for NS World and offering to host a playtest server.

/me wants a promotion

Nice work, Drunken. I've been painfully witholding e-mail from those guys for quite some time. I didn't want them to see us until we were near completion. I guess now is a good time.

I DO think that NS will be right up Gabe and Tycho's collective alleys. They're obvious love of Tribes, teamplay and drama suggest this.

I can't wait for them to see it.

here's the text of the email I sent Tycho:

I'm surprised you guys haven't tackled this one yet. That can only mean you haven't heard of it, and so I'm taking the news-bringing onto my own shoulders.

Natural Selection is a new mod for half-life. There are a lot of new mods for half-life, but this one is *really cool*. It's got a lot of features that are a result of influences from other games. Here is a list of these other games.

-Tribes series
-AvP series
-System Shock 2
-Original Half-Life
-Homeworld: Cataclysm
-Starcraft
-Counter-Strike (not much is taken from here, but being a half-life mod means being compared to CS)
-Battlezone series

interested yet? you should be.

http://www.natural-selection.org <----- Official site, it has the forums, not very frequent updates though

notice how I mentioned mostly games that they've called "amazing" in my influences list. That was entirely on purpose.

Lol, why don't you get Ns on the front page of your local newspaper?
heh
• DruBoDruBo Back In Beige Join Date: 2002-02-06 Member: 172Members, NS1 Playtester
Unfortunately, I live in New York City, so "local newspaper" is synonymous with "international publication."

I might be able to slide it onto some college TV though. We'll see.

Hi, wandered over from Penny Arcade, and all I have to say is DIZAMN. Your PR definitely worked... and this mod looks absolutely amazing. I've got a couple friends who are gonna go ape-sh!t when they see it. (:

Used to read that too. I'll have to go through the archives some day.

Also read Clan BOB, Angst Technology, Avalon, Sinfest, BBoCS, RPG World, and several others.

Hiya. I also heard about this through Penny Arcade, so the PR is working. I posted a link to my Tribes clan about the site, and with any hope they'll spread the word to the people they play with.

I myself am blown away by what I've seen here. It really sounds like the game I've been waiting for. A long time ago I thought of the notion of a game that was WarCraft where the people I commanded were other players (as I'm sure a number of us have dared to dream). I didn't honestly think the game would ever be made (or made right). This seems to be that and more. GL to the makers and community. I'll be there to d/l it the day it's released.

Oh, another thing... this is without a dout the best-looking, most professional mod I've ever seen. Sure, Action has a long history and pretty commited staff/fanbase, but y'all did it RIGHT. Everything from the website to the models to the maps to the PR to (2 pages of gushing deleted) are absolutely kick @ss. I can't wait for the next movie and the actual release!! Incidentally, what's the ETA now?
• FlayraFlayra Game Director, Unknown Worlds Entertainment San Francisco Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 3Super Administrators, NS2 Developer, Subnautica Developer
Hey Coil and FireFro (and any other new members).

Thanks for the kind words, we've been working quietly for quite some time now. I don't like to give release dates, but let's just say that we're very nearly at feature complete and are actively playtesting. It shouldn't be long now.

Yeah, I'm sure lots of people have thought of the basic concept before, sometimes I wonder why no one has done it yet (well, the Battlezone games did it kind of, but not very well).

Welcome!

I am also, embarassingly, addicted to Schlock Mercenary.

But PA has long been my favorite. I even have the book.

Flayra: someone in IRC mentioned bringing Tycho (from PA, not that Celchuuuu character) into the next playtest. What do you think?

because I'm not registered on those forums, I'll tell you here. That's not an "ultra cool pistol," it's an ultra cool light machine gun.

oh, and also, that's the seige turret, not the sentry gun. hehe.

Online comic addiction? I don't have an online comic addiction. I just read Mac Hall, Exploitation Now, RPG World, Polymer City, Megatokyo, Penny Arcade, Little Gamers, Bobbins, GPF, PvP, College Roomies From Hell!!!, Sinfest, and Sluggy Freelance.

(BTW, that's not order of preference, just the order I have them bookmarked, by update schedule. Sluggy was my first and still favorite, I'm a longtime fan of GPF, Sinfest, and Megatokyo, and the others are pretty much all bad@ss recent discoveries)

But like I said, I don't have an online comics addiction.
