Even so, the thing I find curious is that I was able to play 221 perfectly fine up until Tuesday, when this freeze appeared. So, assuming UWE didn't sneak 221.5 out into the wild over the past couple of days, where did this bug come from?

I actually got the same bug too with workshop before; It froze up in the loading state when it tried to download the maps etc but you could bypass it by installing the mods by yourself but now you can't anymore and that's why people are just starting to notice this, so it isn't a new problem.

My specs are Core 2 (dual core) E6500, 6GB DDR2, Radeon HD 5750, Win 7 64 bit
I noticed something different in error log this time. I was trying to join a server with the NS classic mod.

I have a dual core, with hyperthreading and do not get this issue. Maybe the fake cores fool it? I will disable hyperthreading and see if I then get the crash too...
EDIT-------
Confirmed, disabling hyperthreading does indeed cause NS2 to hang on loading. In fact, it also hard locks my machine :P.
Looks like I've finally found a good use for Hyperthreading!!!
glad this is being looked into, I figure I should probably post my specs just in case I never did
4gigs of ram, core 2 duo 6600, Radeon HD 5800 1g vram, SSD Hard drive, NS2 directory is on the ssd.
Of some small note my steam directory is not on the SSD I use a Folder redirect a feature that is built into windows to redirect the ns2 folder from my 500gig hd to the 60gb ssd.
I don't think all the people here have that common but I thought it should be said.
The command looks something like this when used in dos

If it helps I have a i3 530 rather than a core2duo. I have just switched from XP to Win7, so i will test under win7 to see if it still occurs, might take some time though, lots to install.
Has anyone tried completely removing all their game content and re-installing?
Given the fact I have had mods installed in the past like menu-mod and maybe some old maps, and the fact I have been playing the NS2 since early alpha off of the same original steam install, across system re-installs, it does not seem teribly unreasonable to think that MAYBE something in one of my NS2 folder junking things up. It seems weird this issue would be so processor dependent.
Just a thought, but re-setting up the game is kind of a pain so if this is already shown to NOT fix this issue, I would appreciate not having to try it.
EDIT: Ok, uninstalled the game. The NS2 Folder removed, leaving an old version or ns2_turtle_b2.level around. I'm going to delete that, and search out any other files I can find.
I also deleted the %appdata%\Natural Selection 2 folder. Now-reinstalling.
EDIT2: Nope, didn't fix it. But it was nice to clear some of the cruft from my NS2 folder.
NS2 always freeze when starting local server or when connecting to nonvanila server while "Downloading mods". I have to shut it down using task manager.
Other than running the .exe as administrator have you guys tried maybe running it in different compatibility modes? Say forcing it down to XP SP3 or the like?
I'm on a dual-core AMD Athlon x2. I've got a Speccy output of my hardware and environment here in case it helps to profile the issue. People posting their own ones of these: Don't forget to remove the Windows Serial # which goes in here before you post!
I also just did a packet capture with Wireshark - not much revealing in there.. It looks like the server sends some information about the files it is expecting and then it starts going into some kind of 'idle' mode... I'm including the end part of it just in case it's useful to anyone.

Edit: I also tried uninstalling Steam (it was installed on my SSD drive) and reinstalling it in c:\program files (x86)\steam - that didn't make a difference either.
same here I am stuck playing on non vanilla servers thing is I don't know which ones have mods and which ones don't so i often have to force crash the game a few times before I can join up.
To my post before about making a workshop folder when none was there originally. Nothing has been put into the workshop folder since my repeated attempts to join modded servers. It is still empty, as for me I never had one so i thought placing one might help =p just wanted to rule that out as a option lol. And it is.
Almost completely out of options now... I wonder if this is related to a bug I've had with Launch Pad for a while: I can't create new mods or use the publisher (I am having to remote onto another machine to publish Combat at the moment). It's impossible to resize the window to see the other buttons. See screenshots below:
Any more news on this? It sounds like this group is double whammied now that game changes are going in as a mod, without any apparent cause or fix for this issue yet. Oh well, I guess wait for 223 or 1.0.

EDIT: Ok I can trigger the bug by using accessibilty features. As I suspected, the new scroll bar doesn't work but the resize and maximize button lets you get to the hidden buttons just fine. I think the scrollbar will work if I add it to the panel instead of the frame (I had a version with this setting but didn't test it). If they release a new Launchpad version without fixing this issue, then I'll re-do the hack with a working scrollbar. For now just resize the window or maximize.
I'm having this issue as well just wanted to throw in that I also have a dual core cpu.
Also before this issue I couldn't join servers if I had mods enabled (custom crosshair, alien vision). In both problems it froze on the loading screen, might be related?
I am still having the issue, I spent a good portion of last night trying to fix it but I can't seem to find a cause. I went in and made sure that full permissions were given for all of the ns2 related folders as well as the steam directory. I even added everyone to the list of security permissions with full control thinking it might make a difference it did not.
Tried all the compatibility options =p nothing.
I set affinity of the program to cpu 1 and set the priority to low while it was in its crashed state which allowed me to use the computer and leave it open. I found a log file in the %appdata% ns2 directory which stated "temporarily downloading mod files" "downloading mod files" then nothing else in the log.
I tried to join several servers with different mods to try to rule out whether it was a specific mod that was causing the issue like the ns2stats mod. It does not matter which server I join or what mods they are running it immediately freezes as soon as downloading mods comes up. If i find a vanilla server I can join those without issue.
I remembered that a few builds ago i downloaded a cross hair pack mod off of the forums and put in a launch command option in the shortcut in steam. Removed the mod removed the shortcut still no go.
i have the same problem as any of you, here are my system and ns settings:
Win 7 x64 quad core amd phenon black edition
nvidia graphics gtx260 (if its relevant)
ns2:
multi core enabled in the options everything else disabled for perfomance besides high res textures. mod list full but now all deactivated.
how the issue happens: connecting to a sever getting a lock on downloading mods, scince today even oldass gamers CLASSIC wich should be vanilla without mods or?
funny thing i realized the day before if i crashed on connecting to a sever in the second or third attemp TO THE SAME SEVER i could connect.
i dont know how to reproduce it but im willed that a dev trys it on my machine with teamviewer (i have 4mbyte freaking fast internet should work) .
