I've been ###### and whining how it is impossible to hit anything, particularly skulks, and I have been wondering how this game could ever survive launch in the state it is in...

Today I upgraded from WinXP to Win7... I can't believe the difference...

My hardware is exactly the same, my framerate hasn't changed, but wow, I can hit stuff now!! My bullets register on skulks, in a way they never did before, I can actually kill the buggers.

If there is anyone out there still running windows XP, I can't say why, but upgrading to Win7 will improve your game performance measurably.

I didn't think a simple OS change could be so important, but for this game it appears to be so.

For those wondering why I've only changed now, I have some XP gen hardware, to which I only discovered Win7 drivers for today. I've actually had win7 for 18months :P

Anyway, the hassle of the install was more than worth it!!!

What changed under the hood to make it possible?
Was XP not communicating with servers or something?

(I don't believe you, and it's more likely "having a fresh windows install after using brutally old hardware" is the real answer, not the fact that it's windows 7)

Nothing changed under the hood. My FPS is the same as it was. I have had Win7 for 18months but never installed it due to sound card not having win7 drivers, which I discovered today.

There are numerous changes, I no longer get client hitching when first firing my rifle, and I went 6-0 in game as marine, which if anyone ever games with me knows, it's normally 0-6, and I complain about bugged hit-reg on the skulk with the rifle, but not anymore :P

Every piece of hardware is the same. I still have XP on the other partition and flipped back, to the same problems. I can't say why, but it definitely makes an improvement.

It is possible for the dev's to not have an XP test system, seeing as how Eve Online released a patch that killed Windows XP installations since they didn't have it.

According to the Steam Hardware Survey, only about 12% of Steam users are still running XP.

I had a winXP system as I've explained to Soul_Rider in his earlier thread, but that was used back at around build 200 and switch to win7 back then used up to build215 :P

Not sure about the other PT's, but I expect a few still have winXP...

WinXP systems mean WinXP architecture and WinXP drivers and a whole bunch of other WinXP stuff that's out of date by a decade. You shouldn't be expecting games to run well on it any more than you should expect Win95 games to work on Windows 8.

Just out of curiousity, what is the CPU you are using?

    I have a i3 530 (Dual Core with HyperThreading) 2.93Ghz, @ 3.67Ghz.
My GFX card is a Nvidia GTS250 512 at stock.
My framerate in the Graphics menu is 56 on both installations, With NO - Shadows, Atmos, Bloom, AA or AO. Reflections are on though, as is AF.

Hope that's not drivers for Creative X-fi audio! 'Cause oh boy, that is a headache :|

In regards to the OS upgrade, was in a x86 or x64? If you upgraded to 64-bit memory addressing, that could be a large part of the performance increase. Also, XP doesn't handle more than 2 cores very well, so that could be it, too.
