More and more persons are cheating ( for example marines who run 3 times faster than normal guys and "gamer" who can't get killed ).

<u>2. ServerCrash </u>
Based on an Alien-impulse it is possible to get the server crashed. We tested this on our own gameserver and it got crashed... I wrote a mail to Flyra...

<u>3. Unbalanced </u>
It is caused by unskilled players but it is fact that the aliens win most of the matches. What about a double-balance system? If tournamentmode is online, standartbalance is activated. On public a change to "better-marines" should be good. I'm not sure if this is technical possible, and it is just an idea <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I have to confess this is all true, but you have to understand that making a mod is hard and that not everything can be done like ... that.

    Then again, it is very anoying that some exploits totally ruin the game :/

    Aliens winning most of the matches? Maybe but you have to also take the server size into account

    Crank the max players up to 26 and tell me if aliens are still dominating. At that level you'll find marines to be romping all over the map due to their must more powerful early game....Securing 3rd hive is a snap and pushing towards 2nd is easy so long as you use phase gates and exploit the fact that marines spawn via IPs, kharaa through hives
    True, as soon as the kharaa start cranking in the fades the marines have a tough battle on their hands cause if you though 5 fades were bad, try taking on 10!

    For 2, i guess they are working on it

    For 3, give the devs a break, its XMAS!

    He was suggesting a mode where hadicaps could be given to certain sides.

    For example, for large servers, an option to have the marines handicapped would b present(eg : more exp stuff), or handicap or aliens on smaller servers.

    No, but the local near monopolistic ISP sure as well can...2 in fact. Both, while a tad bit on the unstable side yields about a 90% win ratio for the marines. 10% when they screw up big time.

    Re to Pre[Dar]Satan: I've seen a near clueless commander lead a team of marines to victory just by simply dropping weapons when asked. Yeah...he was the ultimate marine b***** but it worked. The commander was slow in establishing teh forward bases, didn't get phase gates up till quite late into the game, turret farming heaven!! and didn't know what half the buttons did (Sensor sweep? what's that?) In that case, it was basically the marines dictating what was needed not the commander. The commander was just a tool to fulfill those needs...don't ask me how they go the money to do that though cause I have seriously NFI
    Oh yeah....as for how the game ended: Marines just steamrolled the kharaa with HMGs, JPs, Shotties and grens after bulldozing through to capture a 2nd hive. the marines were working together as a team (amazing for a public server) with little external co-ordination on the commander's part. I wish I had marines who could work with less micromanagement when I was commanding...*grumble grumble*

    I think red socks with white dots are essential....

    As to the dramatic title of the thread:
    1) read the other zillion posts about the alien in marine skin and immortal RR-model problems
    2) had few problems with server crashes
    3) read the tons of posts regarding game balance. for every post stating "Marines are too strong" there is another one stating just the opposite. sounds pretty well balanced to me. (I know that aliens are having a disadvantage when there are many players on the server due to the res distribution system)

    Aliens win most of the games? Well, haven't seen that happening since I started playing on Finnish servers...
    And to all cheats there are anti-cheat programs and then comes new cheats and so on...
    Someone will always cheat, that is a fact. But if most of the ppl doesn't cheat, then who cares if 2/100 cheat?

    A 26 ppl server would cost hmmm say about 200-300$ a month if I'm right. You need at least a dual oc3 to make it stable. It is highly unlikely for such a server to ever exist <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Anyhow, a good comm is always better then a comm used as a tool. But I guess that if it goes well, you won't here me crying =]

    Pre[Dar]Satan, you do not need a dual OC3 to run 26 players. A T-1 would be fine. The issue is with the CPU. You would need a dedicated P4 3.0Ghz with 1GB ram to run it, and on some maps it would still cause high latency after a while. Bandwidth is not the issue with this game, CPU usage is.

    I have not seen a win by Aliens in the last ten games I have watched and played. I can't remember specifically the last time I saw Aliens win, in fact.

    Earlier today I played a game in which my team built a siege cannon in a crappy little hide-away hole in the map. It was a tiny spot that you had to take a long, long way to get to. However, it was directly above the alien hive. We won that game. When the last hive fell, the Aliens had 9 kills, and our team had over 100.

    Siege cannons are a load of BS. There is no way to design a map that can't be exploited some way by the siege cannon. How about Bast? Well, it's a great Nostromo-themed map, but sadly, the Engine Room hive can be sieged from right within the human base. Or Hera, where you can siege two hives from one spot? Fun.

    Then there's the early-game advantage for the Marines. Someone already mentioned this in this thread. This puts a player cap of about 20 on NS. A decent Marine team of ten (and they don't have to be good; they just have to not suck) can rush the hive. And it's not like the Marines don't know what hive the Aliens start at; someone just has to hop into the command chair and use his ears.

    Even if we don't rush the hive, the Aliens are meat to be slaughtered until they have two hives.
    And the Aliens rushing us is a joke. Three Marines with un-upgraded LMGs can easily defeat any Skulk rush, especially in a map like Eclipse where we can just stand well back from the doors and pop them when they come through.

    NS isn't merely unbalanced, it's <i>fundamentally</i> unbalanced. The fact that we get guns and they don't will unbalance the game. Forever.

    Who here has played Aliens Vs Predator? Was it balanced? Not exactly, but not counting the Predators, it wasn't bad. The Aliens were a whole hell of a lot faster than Skulks are, and they could kill a Marine in a single hit with their tail (which, by the way, automatically aimed itself to hit anything on your screen). The Marines still usually wiped the floor with the Aliens but at least the Aliens got a chance.

    In Natural Selection, the Aliens are cattle for us to hunt.

    It is a hard thing to balance as both the teams are alot different but i think they should have been expecting abit of trouble when they made fade more powerful and made stuff for marines more expensive. They should have only done one and not the other unless they did both alittle but it wasnt.

    1. Cheats will be largely fixed with v1.1, when we introduce VALVe's Anti-Cheat into NS (VAC). Nothing can be done about this until then.

    2. I don't recall getting an e-mail about this. Please e-mail the steps to reproduce the crash ASAP to flayra@overmind.org and I'll have it fixed for v1.04.

    3. We need 3rd-party stats support before I can see what's imbalanced. All other balance discussions are anecdotal without lots of hard data. Once this happens, it should be much easier to refine the gameplay.

    the only way they win is by securing 2 hives in first 5 minutse and having a phase gate at each hive point, otherwise they are more than toast

    No, but the local near monopolistic ISP sure as well can...2 in fact. Both, while a tad bit on the unstable side yields about a 90% win ratio for the marines. 10% when they screw up big time.

    Re to Pre[Dar]Satan: I've seen a near clueless commander lead a team of marines to victory just by simply dropping weapons when asked. Yeah...he was the ultimate marine b***** but it worked. The commander was slow in establishing teh forward bases, didn't get phase gates up till quite late into the game, turret farming heaven!! and didn't know what half the buttons did (Sensor sweep? what's that?) In that case, it was basically the marines dictating what was needed not the commander. The commander was just a tool to fulfill those needs...don't ask me how they go the money to do that though cause I have seriously NFI
    Oh yeah....as for how the game ended: Marines just steamrolled the kharaa with HMGs, JPs, Shotties and grens after bulldozing through to capture a 2nd hive. the marines were working together as a team (amazing for a public server) with little external co-ordination on the commander's part. I wish I had marines who could work with less micromanagement when I was commanding...*grumble grumble*

    A 26 ppl server would cost hmmm say about 200-300$ a month if I'm right. You need at least a dual oc3 to make it stable.
