Concept for rookies and long-term motivation

Hello together,

first of all I'm new to the community and as a fan of the original NS, I cant wait to actually play NS2.

Since I preordered a little to late for beta acces I'll have to wait for the release. I took my time and made some thoughts about the game.
I came to make a little concept about how to make the game more attraktive for new players. The recently added Rookie System is a good start, but there are lots of other possibilities.

1.Basic Tutorial for both sides
2.Rankink/leveling system (with achievements)
3.Servers with level restrictions

About 1.:

A Tutorial tells the new players the basic features of the game, like building, equipping yourself on the armory, the power node system etc.
This could be realized half active, so the player has to do some things himself to continue the tutorial and some things are just explained.
Implementing spoken explanations (I could imagine Hugh from ns2hd doing it, since he has already uploaded some basic tutorials on his youtube account) would be nice!

About 2.:
A ranking and leveling system including achievements and some rewards for the achievements can increase the long-term motivation of many players. A profile site for each player displays his achievements and overall stats.
Getting points for each mach and for each achievement the player will slowly rank up. Statistiks about the players will also be a benefit for upcoming balance changes.
Not every player will like having his stats shown to anyone, so there should also be a possibility to hide the stats to other players.

Talking of rewards I'm thinking of something like creating own logo or making some small customizations to marine armor or alien skin. Many things are thinkable of, as long as they are not gameplay relevant.

About 3.:
Using that ranking system, it could be possible to create servers with level caps. So there would be rookie servers for only new to moderate players.
Experienced players could also benefit from this getting a bigger challange while playing on servers with a minimum level cap.
For those who want to play with everyone there will still be lots of servers without any cap.

I'm aware this are not revolutionary new ideas and many other games use similar systems, but it seems like it works pretty well on many games, so why not giving it a try?

hey, thanks for your feedback and ideas. over time, they have all shown up already in one form or another though:

    1. game has a tutorial section. currently, it links to youtube videos.

    2. www.ns2sats.org is not official but also has a hide-feature ingame. achievements are planned by UWE but rather low priority afaik. in the forums, there are ongoing discussions about ELO ranking and so on to balance the teams, it seems uncertain if or how this will make it into the game as matches have much higher playercounts than e.g. starcraft.

    3. this has been discussed before: problem is the possible elitism. if you want a challenge, you can play in gathers or join a competitive clan.

    1. hm... a tutorial section based on youtube videos doesnt sound very satisfying, but i guess its not final?

    2. www.ns2stats.org is just what i was talking about, maybe it should be made official and included in the game menu.

    3. Good point, it most likeley would result in eliteism.
