A Hilarious Story About A Messed-up Build Order.

Aliens just wanna have fu-un...
I don't recall the name of the map... it has sewer, ventilation, and generator. We spawned in Ventilation.

Gorge builds sensory first. Gorge is a good friend of mine who has been trying to tell me, for a while, that sensory is better than Def first. I still don't beleive him... but anyways, he builds sensory. We all get cloaking as skulks, and start wandering around to find where the marines are. Pretty soon we learn they're moving in on sewer hive.

I rush there, it's empty, but I can hear marines building next to it, so I climb up on the wall, and wait.

Pretty soon, I'm joined by another skulk, that hangs above the door, looking in. I hear marines climbing the ladder, preparing to move in, so I do what any respectable, invisible skulk would do. I chuckle Marines scatter. Buddy laughs, reprimands me for it, and waits. They come up again, I chuckle again, they scatter. I know this won't work forever, so I run up the wall, and land on the pipes across the top of the hive. I can hear the marines entering, but they don't build. I don't know why, but they're just waiting in there. Our 2nd hive goes up now, so I go fade, on top of the pipes. Just before I emerge... I speak out over say, "Hey marines, listen closely." Next thing I know, there's five marines in the hive, looking everywhere, trying to find the fade. They fail So three run off, two are left. One dumb @#$% player goes gorge, builds a single def chamber, and goes back to skulk. Makes me upset with him as I was hoping for adrenaline. I sigh, go regen since I'm far from the base. I slowly creep up to the edge of the pipes, and look down. There's one marine in the corner, crouched and looking left and right. I chuckle to give him a good scare, he doesn't realise I'm above him. Four acid rockets later, he's joining his friends in the spawn

I cloak while I wait to get energy back... see the other marine running off. Only took three, in the back, before he died. I waited for the other 3 marines to return, they didn't. One trip to the next room revealed several (5) turrets, but no TF. I blink up on the platform... find the TF, looking ripe for the plucking Next to it, the dreaded phase gate.

A few hundred claw swipes later, the marines are down 130 resources worth of structures We now hold all three hives. I rush to marine spawn, to find two helpful lerks umbra spamming and one fellow fade working on their spawn. I eagerly join in. Within 5 minutes, spawn was down, we had won

The game itself was won mainly due to a very good team of players who worked together; give me a team of random pubbers, and I never would have beleived it possible for them to win given Sensory for first hive tower, and move for 2nd... but I still get a chuckle from how badly I spooked those marines as the unseen skulk (And later, fade).

I still prefer defense towers first, though

That's a GREAT story! I love games like that... I totally find it interesting how like you said "a random group of pubbers" can work together so well. Had a game like that the other night, I was commanding and I decided to get 2 infantry portals, Armory, Observatory then the Motion Tracking upgrade. ALL my marines stuck together and they asked for things within reason (no whiners) and within 10 minutes we had cleared 2 hives from the aliens (had a bit of a battle for the 3rd swinging back and forth a few times) and moved onto the third!

Thanks to a few brave (and smart BTW) lads we had all but 2 resource nodes on the map! Because we were hitting the Aliens so hard, they didn't have time to focus on our rez nodes so we basically had total $ flow

The next game the exact same team went Alien and we wiped the floor with the marines.... most fun I've had yet on NS, great game devs

    Keep up the hard work!

lol your friend doesn't know what he is talking about. Def is the first upgrade then movement. Cloaking is pointless if the marines have observatories although I rather get the 2nd hive then build defense chambers it depends on the situation. Carapace is the most imporant upgrade in the game for the aliens.

have you ever considered not moving? you don't show up on the radar if you don't move.. that's how cloaking works, too. When you stop moving, you cloak. Also, if you're not silenced, and you're "hiding" in some location, running back and forth MAKES NOISE. Just thought I'd mention that.

On pubs I always go def/mov/sensory, but good marines can flatten that combo like nothing else. Switching strats is the only way to beat certain combos (marine rush gets slaughtered by silent skulks, btw, just sneak up behind them, or you could cloak and wait, that only costs 30 resources instead of 52).

Actually, the server I play on regularly was a linux server; motion tracking is broken on those.

But I just got nothing but kicks out of watching the marines walk past, completely oblivious... then one quick chuckle and I know they'd wet themselves if they could

In the right hands level 3 cloaking can be amazingly powerful early on, but sadly the right hands are hard to find.

About the obs tho: keep in mind if you're in the range of an observatory cloaking won't work (you won't cloak).

The one problem with cloaking is the sound it makes as you cloak, i can recall countless times as marine where i have killed a cloaked skulk. The second i heard the cloaking sound i knew that a skulk was near. Then i would begin to shoot single bullets at possible camp spots(usually above doors) to reveal the alien. Also when a skulk drops down it makes a big thud:) which is easily heard. With no carapace/depending on distance i can usually kill the skulk just as it is about to bite me after dropping down and trying to bite my back.
