AMD FX-8150 & NS2 terrible performance

Is anyone else experiencing terrible fps with the 8-core CPU?
I wrote this on the "getsatisfaction" forum for improvments a month ago with absolutley zero feedback, so here it goes again:

"Hello

I bought new desktop in May and I currently have huge FPS problems with the game. I've tried multiple resolutions and with and without shadows and aliasing and in windowed mode. But the fps drop when I fire the LMG og bite with the skulk is horrific!!

I put quite nice parts in this computer, but still the FPS drops are insane. BF3 runs without as much as a hint of fps drop on all settings on ultra. Same goes with SC2 and all other games I've tested so far, but in NS2, i can get drops down to 2-3 FPS in lerk spores on the ######tiest resolution....

My current major hardware components:
MB: ASUS Crosshair V Formula, Socket-AM3+
CPU: AMD FX-8150 8-Core Processor @3,6 GHz
3d card: ASUS GeForce GTX 560Ti 2GB PhysX CUDA, GDDR5
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 16GB CL9
Disk: Western Digital Caviar® Green 3TB SATA 6Gb/s,
System runs on Win7 Pro"

Anyone else has similair issues with the 8-core CPU?
Anyone know if this is being improved by the NS2 team or if this is considered a less important fix?

It kinda sucks to not be able to play a game i bought the first day it was released for preordering several years ago :( :(

Thanks for help / feedback

Get Fraps and do a 20 minute benchmark in a game

By the look of your specs, one of three things is probably going on here. Either you are playing with excessive ping, which will halve your frame rate or worse, or there is something seriously wrong with some engine interaction with your specs, with which the benchmark will help, oooooorrrr (now my money is on this one) you are used to 60 fps and can't play with 30.

Either way, benchmark and post, to help locate the problem.

its gonna be a struggle to suffer through 20 mins in the game with that FPS. since i can't hit anything. And 30 fps is no problem, as long as i can aim and shoot it is ok for me.
30 fps is not the same as 2-3, which it actually is when lerk spore, just biting with skulk or shooting LMG gives a too low fps to be able to play and hit anything at all.

The ping to the server is about 40-60 when browsing the server, don't remember the exact ping after i join, but i will recheck.

I fear that the engine has some troubles with this setup.

Do you have a cfg file that i can execute to get rates etc optimal?

Remember if you have V-sync on and your monitor has a vertical refresh of 60hz then v-sync will disallow all the 'frame rates' between 31 and 59 inclusive ...

Try setting the affinity of the ns2 process to two or even 1 core using task manager. Could be there's something wrong running with that many cores.

What's your average fps on a local server?

If you can't "suffer through" a game because your frame rate is low, then you are probably just only used to 60. Many people play many hours of NS2 at the lowest frame rates imaginable.

Also, 2-3 FPS doesn't really happen, not unless you're running the game on a pentium 3 or something. You're probably getting closer to 15 but aren't used to it. Do the benchmark.

Or, we could all give this guy the benefit of the doubt and believe him when he reports 2-3 FPS...

did you try basic thing like completely deleting game and reinstalling it? along with all redist files.

Correct me if I am wrong but the multi-threading in NS2 was only added in the last handful of months? This game only ran on one cpu core until recently. Also, not to sound meanie, but 8 cores are kind of a waste of money right now. There aren't many (if any?) programs that are optimized for 8 cores yet... not even 6 cores.

Honestly you'd get better performance on a dualcore or 4 core that is on the same clockrate.

I don't want to start a hardware battle but I also have an AMD FX series CPU. They aren't that good at all... very cheaply priced and you get what you pay for.

If he really is getting 2-3 FPS then his problem lies in his computer and not the game. Sometimes I load up NS2 and I am getting 12 FPS in the ready room. I have to restart my computer to fix it.... try that maybe?

I had a dual core 3.2ghz that never went down to 2-3 FPS ever, so I highly doubt that figure is accurate at all... but if it is then you may have a virus or something.

see this post ... How to capture a performance log

you dont need to do a 20min benchmark. capture a log & send it with info about your hardware.

    +1
I would try enabling the first 1-4 cores and see how it goes.
    Goto taskmanager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC)
    goto the processes tab
    Find ns2.exe
Right click on ns2.exe and select affinity.
    Then tick/untick the cores.

hopefully the game is will let you alt tab in/out without crashing :)
