Modding Question

<div class="IPBDescription">Question on extent of modability</div>Hello there,
I am phenakist, recently bought NS2 and joined this forum. I loved NS1 and am excited to see NS2 released (or at least soon to be).
My question is related to moddability.

I have looked around the forum and seen that you can make levels for NS2 which is great, but i've come short on any other areas. Is it (or will it be) possible to make custom skins or models for guns and buildings etc.

I have been working with blender for the past few weeks and would love a game to use as a test bed for actually importing my work into an engine.

<a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=118687" target="_blank">Custom skins</a> are already easy enough to make (client side only, however). Not sure about models, but I'd assume so.

Is changing models not in currently or that you just are not aware on how to do it?
Also with the skinning and retexturing, are there any specifics I should know. Does NS2 require specific tools to implement them for example.

All NS2 texture are in .dds format, nothing much other than that.

I don't see why you couldn't use custom textures/models in NS2, although I personally haven't done either. However, you might have to mod some of the lua files to get it to work (which isn't as bad as it sounds because lua is pretty straightforward and you can use Decoda to quickly search and edit the files).

Is there currently any tutorials on how to mod such files?

Here's the 3DSmax model importing guide. I think this works with anything that can export collada?
    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/news/2011/7/ns2_custom_model_importing_guide" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/news/2011...importing_guide</a>

Importing/Exporting custom textures is easy if you grab the Nvidia dds photoshop plugin. You can then edit and/or overwrite any existing texture.

    WE NEED MODELLERS!!!!!111!!!!!

Lol, I mean, we have tons of coders on the forums, I have a couple of mods which will be full conversions, and yet there appears to be no moddellers among the NS2 crowd.

If you are able to model and willing to model, you will be inundated with LOTS of requests from these forums.

PLease put my name at the top of the list if you do decide to make models for NS2, I need hundreds!!

Hehe! That one guide might be a bit outdated, I've had to use a combination of both that one and the one on the wiki to get my models in game to work correctly., if anyone has issues or what not, I will probably fix up the wiki to make it more clearer on what needs to be done, a few things I am not sure if it is accurate or not, it is late though so check later

I am still practicing/learning modeling etc, but NS2 is pretty easy and nifty to start out with once you can get your models in game

Modelling is my primary focus and textures very much secondary.
I do come with a dsiclaimer that I am still learning how to model and I do use Blender as opposed to 3dMax, although from what my experience has been with blender and what i have read from the interwebnets, it's a damn good program for an open source.

But I would like to start somewhere and NS2 seems the best place!

Not sure if you can use blender, unless export then import into max without losing any detail? (not sure) or any other program besides 3ds max 09 because of the ColladaMax.dle plugin that you need and was customized by Max himself and was created to be used by 3dsmax09. I tried it using blender, maybe you can get it to work, I couldn't build my models/load them successfully modelviewer/builder because of that

There must be a way to export into a readable format from blender surely. I can get a hold of an older 3d max version but still....

Sadly Unknown Worlds have been looking for a tools developer for a very long time.

Their tools are unfinished, dated and very buggy. Nobody has applied for Tools Programmer for over a year now, so things like the cinematic editor are still a pain to use and you cannot use any other program than 3DS Max 2009 to edit the models. There is just noone who has the time to take care of the tools.
  • PhenakistPhenakist Join Date: 2012-08-07 Member: 154948Members
ah...that's a rather disappointing answer! As long as 2009 works well enough I could train to use that for NS2 I guess, although why 2009 and not any other edition of 3dmax??
  • LuitjensLuitjens Join Date: 2010-07-26 Member: 73034Members, NS2 Playtester, Squad Five Blue, Reinforced - Shadow, Subnautica Playtester
Not sure exactly but the colladamax.dle only works for 09, but Max said an earlier version of the max itself may actually work with its own collada export, you will have to test and find out as I only use 09.

Good news is that I can get a copy of 3dMax 09 edition no less which is awesome for NS2 modding if anyone is requiring a modeller.
