<div class="IPBDescription">Giving Way Points</div>Having played lots of RTS games and more NS1/2 combined than any other game I've played in my life combined... I've noticed something about Commanding that needs to be changed. Its an easy change too.

Waypoints in NS2 don't work the way they should.
In the time I've clicked the marines I need to do a task I need them to do, I could just have easily told them over the microphone in less time.
The commanding UI needs some serious work in order to make it feel solid and fluid but one thing I seriously like and I think needs to be better utilized is the emergency notifications.
Press Shift+Mouse 1 on a location to notify marines on the minimap and through the walls of an important event.
Why not color code these and have it be the primary means to give orders?

Red for attack
Blue for Defend
Green for Other

Or something like that.
And the commander could simply give out the specifics of the order over of the mic.
Also the commander needs to be able to use more than one of these notifications.

Here is a visual representation

As it is right now, clicking and managing non-AI marines and giving them orders is not efficient and feels a bit clunky.
I feel the proposed idea streamlines the approach and the current implementation of waypoints can still be useful for AI units such as MACs and ARCs and Whips and etc.

It would also be nice to have a "patrol" order for AI units.

And obviously the VGS system needs to work better.
Not enough people have mics and typing during the heat of battle is horribly difficult.

With the recent patch, I feel there are quite a few redundant features that have made it in due to the lack of communications.
A Red Hive/Commchair to show a clear objective.
A progress bar to show welding and building progress.
Hive/Commchair Health bar display, when under attack.

Wouldn't the streamlined waypoint system help with Hive showing Hive locations? Or emergency situations that require enemies or allies to attack or retreat?
And isn't the progress bar completely unnecessary?

Anyway, I just thought I'd share my two cents and wonder if other ppl would agree.

Setting a static objective for all to see would be a very good addition to what we currently have! It's a more coarse objective, and the current ones can be more individual/fine orders.

Example: in close-spawns the rt between the bases could be set to defend, while the new hive set to attack, and at the same time tell 1-2 marines to go the long way to recap RTs.

    expanding on the idea.

maybe allow to select how many players at the alert point required and displayed on the alert/minimap. (so the whole team doesnt move there)
maybe allow facility for player to accept the order and the player icon/colour changes on the minimap. (so players can see who has responded to the order and see their location from alert point) if person dies on the way alert, re alerts so another person can accept and make it to the alert.

    now for something totally different.

something i thought of today as i nice idea for commander that has a microphone.
an option for micing so that only certain certain players on the map can hear the commanders voice so you can send them specific/detailed commands without confusing others on the map. (behind you guys! - everyone on the map looks behind them. lol thats happened a few times)
not sure how this could be implemented. either the commander hovers mouse on top of players when he speaks and so based on radius relative to mouse. (commander would need to keep mouse moving over players if players are moving over the map)
or group select / click on the player units so they become highlighted. or just based on room and voice strength decreases further away players if from room.

am i the only one who likes the new tagging system for parasite? not sure if i played as a skulk though lol.
its also useful for marines as it alerts other marine players that there is a skulk nearby and to be careful without needed to be explicitly communicated by anyone.
maybe the green colour can fade over time so players know if the parasite tagging is new or old (to help determine if immediate threat is nearby or not)
also does parasite disapear over time or does it stay until death/removed by armour station.

of course im a very new player and dont play these types of games very often. (rts)

still getting a lost in maps...map on this build is easier to see..i still sometimes dont notice my location a first..but its better this time around...
also, should vents be different colour?
i definitely need more practice, but i wonder if a semi transparent overlay of the full map can be displayed on the screen without pressing c. of course this can be optional in settings. not sure if will help out the good players to become even better though and defeat purpose to help the nubies.

    sorry too much text.
