Australian Options?

MocMoc Join Date: 2012-08-07 Member: 154887Members
Hey all,
First off I'm brand new to this game and don't know hell of allot about it.
I've yet to buy this game with just one reservation which I'm hoping could get sorted out here.

Are there any Australian servers for this game in it's current state?

I'd love to play this game it's just with the no refund policy, it's hard to make the decision.

Oh and just a side note.
What are the team sizes?
8v8 (guess) or....

Thanks for any help,
Moc

I think the sound dev is in Australia, so is Hugh of ns2hd. There probably is some Australasian servers. Team sizes can be anything, but competitive scrims are 6v6. Most servers hold 18 players.

Edit: The game is awesome. Just do it, it is so worth it. If you haven't already watch some videos. <a href="http://www.ns2hd.com/" target="_blank">http://www.ns2hd.com/</a>

There are two Aussie servers I'm aware of, both of them are pretty active most nights.

You can check <a href="http://hypernovadesign.co.uk/nanogrid/" target="_blank">Nanogrid</a> for Aussie servers (5 as I've spotted)!

Yeah Nano grid just received a new optimisation rundown by Insane or so I've heard, there are indeed ~5 Aussie servers. And you can of course join us on EU server with 350ms for some laughs :P

Monash server's are your best bet.
  • MocMoc Join Date: 2012-08-07 Member: 154887Members
Yeah, I've found the Monash servers.
I also found that there are some Internode servers too.
I've had good experience with Internode. So I'll try to help out them and support better servers for NS2.

<!--coloro:pink--><span style="color:pink"><!--/coloro-->Last time I checked (a few weeks ago) there were only a couple Aussie servers and they seemed to be broken/laggy. I've been so heartbroken since the Aus Pure NS2 servers closed down. T_T

Glad to hear things are back to normal again! Just jumped on a server. Was empty but it ran well. Looking forward to prime-time tonight!

PS: Welcome to the madness, new guy! :D<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->

In case you didn't know Kallistrate the Aus-Pure Servers are now hosted at Monash University - They are one and the same.

Big thanks to Endar, Ishamael and Khyron for getting them back up they are great servers. They have a few ticks with players crashing from time to time. But I hear they are working on it.

    Also Welcome Moc.

    That's awesome news.
I just want this game so badly. I think I may just buy it now.
Any one hear use a dedicated voip programs.
Would love to play some games with people who can teach what the hell I should be doing.

TBH mate, just use ingame voip. It's very clear and most people are very helpful.
  • VaelkyriVaelkyri Join Date: 2012-08-08 Member: 154982Members
The monash servers are your best best, just do a ping filter and they'll be at the top.

Just be aware there is some issue atm where they crash the game client on a regular basis :/ I have NFI why, only experience it on them, no issues other then lag on US servers.

I can provide some information on the above crashing, but no solution unfortunately. It's actually nothing to do with instability of the code or the server, or any custom mods. The crashing is the most serious symptom of what appear to be network issues.

The network link is failing somewhere, and it will cause some people to timeout, and the remainders to crash because of the lack of communication.I guess the code isn't extremely robust in handling server timeouts, not that its a big issue.

But yea, any crashing is often caused by networking issues, especially when you find out the whole team/server has crashed.

Don't forget Ishamael! Without him Monash would not exist! (except as an exceptional Melbourne university.)

Thought I would post up letting you all know that all 3 Games.On.Net servers are back up and operational.
I have yet to play a game on them though, I hope to soon.

Side Note: They are only 12 slot servers :(<!--fontc--></span><!--/fontc-->

well from my experience the games.on.net aren't quality ns2 servers, games too powerful for their hardware, even at 12 players.
  • MocMoc Join Date: 2012-08-07 Member: 154887Members
Well that's what I hope to fix. When I get a chance to play on the server's if they are still in bad condition, I'll see if i can get some one to fix them up. Hell Game.On.Net have enough server's that are NEVER used just sitting there.

They can't just use "some server". That's the entire issue with NS2. You cannot use standard issue hardware. They would have to buy and maintain a very specific piece of hardware to run NS2 (i.e. a 4.4GHz+ i5/i7).

That is really odd. I get frequent crashes on Monash, but always instantaneous - usually some game event happens - I die, someone else dies, whatever - then the NS2 bug report box pops up instantly.

Some kind of deadly malformed packet?

A lot of people are saying it happens when they use a phase gate, or when someone else uses the phase gate. I've seen mass crashes when a admin forces all teams to go random. I definitely don't crash as often when I'm on the alien team. I can't help but feel there's a clue in watching the map when someone phases - you see their icon move at very high speed in a direct line to the destination gate, as opposed to just moving instantly from the source to the destination. I think the same mechanism is in play when beacons are activated, when you respawn and when you leave the ready room.

Having a lot of things 'load' is a very common event prior to a crash. This includes things like phasegating, opening buy menus, moving commander view via minimap, mass moving of players onto teams, resetting rounds etc.

Choke, periods of high actions/network traffic is a good indicator of your current risk of crashing in my experience.

I wish Monash servers crashed me. However in this build instead of crashing, the screen freezes (still able to bring up console)for 3~mins followed by 2~mins of 999ping. It goes further then that and actually cuts out my internet connection for those few minutes.

Yeah that sucks. I saw you sitting there with 999 ping for a while.
I'm lucky and have only crashed once.

You might be able to get away with a dedicated high powered Xeon (like a E3-1270/E5-1620 or higher) for just 12 players. Those turbo in the high 3Ghz range, such that it should be able to handle lower playercount NS2 servers.

Sounds like an issue with your router "choking" from too many packets. See <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=117254" target="_blank">this thread</a> for more information.
