In my experiance multiple mappers on one map always leads to disaster.

Too many cooks etc.

Agreed. And there is always the fact that two people are never going to envision the same thing for the final product... even if dealing with a single area. And then if you've got two different people designing totally seperate parts of the map, nothing is going to match up. They stop properly communicating and letting the other know what exactly he is doing... People get mad, monitors fly, all is lost.

Though there is absolutely nothing holding anyone back from giving it a shot. If you can pull it off, it'd be a great learning experience in communitcation, patience, communitcation, ego-lowering, communication, letting go of the personal "ownership" of a map, communication, patience, communication, etc...

It'd also be a real good way to improve your communication skills.

Don't forget, de_torn was done by Crinity and his brother, Madcross. I think Mad might have done more of the architectural and planning side, while Crin did more of the building side, but I'm pretty sure they both actively worked on it (and obviously, it turned out terrific).

Sure, definately.

But are they living togther still? (Don't know their ages..)

Working together on something like this side by side with someone... who lives or works in the same place as you... is going to allow for far greater communication and overal cohesiveness. Over the internet is a different story. It's very possible, but from what I've experienced... does not flow very smoothly.

Huzzah!

NS_Enant is being made by me and NemesisZero over the internet! Its almost finsihed, just adding the final areas and then we have to get the r_speeds lowered a tad and somemfinal things sorted and we should be done!

Its a great way of becoming real great friends with someone as long as you can do it but if for some reason something goes wrong I think you're friendship will probably right over :/

Fortunatly, this hasn't happened to me yet...

It´s a very good experience working in a team, its nowadays one of the most important skills. You will surely learn something about mapping, work together, communication....
This must not be something hard for people because we do it because we like at the moment we were uncomfortable we could relax some days or weeks till.
I´m planing some mappers but i´m thinking in a mapper team not for map with worldcraft only i mean differente people in different works:
Groups coordinator of all to work fine, live in an tropical beach, round of beatufil womans, and waste time sleeping, eating and going out for a drink: Me
Map designer: Map "paper" desing, history and architecture.
Texture artist: Provide mapper with textures.
Modeler: For some items for the map.
Map builder 1: Hard work in worlcraft (may be only first level architecture),basic design.
Map builder 2: Work with map builder 1 together to specify map zones and its purpose, can build small details (prefabs) and works with entities.
Sound artist: Yes, an Orchest-man for make enviroment sounds.
Web developer: For take all info together to the www.

Communication:IRC, MSN, e-mails
Language: English (another proposal will be welcome)
Meetings:Once a week all together.
Primary Objetive: Make maps !!,
Secondary objectives: Provide map stuff for any mod that needs it. Provide help for mappers outside the team.

Final compile could be by netvis or mapster we can arrange it.
This may be a start, please reply this i´m waiting to hear yours ideas.

I'm thinking about the team management/co-ordination features that could be added to NS Worlds authoring system.

'Networking' of mappers, texture artists, model makers, sound engineers etc. is something that could easily be in the future for NS World, prehaps in the form of a skills/services offered page.

i think this is actually a GREAT idea. You can say that it will not work because people have different visions on things right, but in NS the dev team will have different opinions right? As long as there is one leader who decides everything, then its cool (flayra in the ns team, although he is evil satanicly controlled by mole, but that does not count for now)...
This leader has the task to make major decisions, and make sure everybody is happy. If there is a great conflict, the team could OR vote, OR let the leader make a final decision.
Then the outcome of this vote/decision is final, and all partys will agree...

I do not have leet mapping skills, i have not leet model skills, i have no leet coding skills, but i can sometimes really critisize and can come up with some good ideas. If you need a playtester/'outside' advisor on ideas, you can count me in. I can also make websites...

i think that team work is good and you learn things you didnt even know they existed. In mapping, there should be one who designs the map, balance sides, etc... and the other one maps and just gives some ideas, but the most important of team working is the trusting. You must trust in your team mate or if not that wont work properly.

Ive done some maps with a friend of mine, he draws and tells me his idea (the conflict zones, etc... ) then we try to balance the teams, and when the drawing is done (after some modifications) i start mapping.

Other thing is when 2 skilled mappers work at the same map. Obviously, there will be some ideas the other one doesnt like, but thats team works guys!!!. trust in your friend and dont be so big head.

Designing an entire game together over the internet is a lot different then a single level. Sure, multiple people working on one level happens all the time in the professional side of this... but the point I'm stressing here is over the internet.

It's been proven very difficult... even when dealing with full games or mods, actually. Why do you think 95% of HL's mods will never be finished? Lack of communication and coordination due to the fact that it's being done over the internet. The NS team is doing a wonderful job at this as far as I'm concerned... but it does take a very professional and involved stance to do so.

That said... Again, I bet if you guys give this a shot, It will be a great experience. Whether you finish anything or not, a lot will be learned.
