I tried to post this on the bug reporting site but no one was responding so I'm putting it here. I can't even play NS2 until I find a solution.

Recently when I try playing, the game freezes on the main menu. Even when joining directly to a server it will freeze on the loading screen. The only way to end the process is to alt+f4. I can't use the task manager because it is hidden behind the frozen game. I tried reinstalling.
This problem only started recently. This is my first time trying to play in the last month.

SOLUTION FOUND.

i had the same issue when i subscribed to all maps on steam workshop. maybe you can unsubscribe there? community->workshop->ns2->click on the the blue "check" in every map that has a grey "check" below them (the blue one should turn into a gray x when hovering the mouse over it).

Could it be, that you firewall pops up in the background?
You could try to start the game in window mode to see other windows popping up.

Set the task manager to always in front, then get it to freeze. It may at least give you a better idea of what's going on.

I had the same problem a week ago or so. By chance I looked in the Mods menu and noticed that the game downloaded NS2_Goliath and crashed when the installation reached 100%. If you have suscribed to that map, unsuscribe it and the game should run again.

    List specs, please..
    Then the log (%appdata%/naturalselection2/)

You verified integrity of cache through steam, as well, correct?

Setting my task manager to always be on top revealed a debug window that I was unable to see before.

    log.txt

Downloading of "Ns2 co_faceoff remake" completed. Installing...

someone suggested to unsubscribe to a map that is causing problems, looks like this faceoff map is doing it. Unfortunately I have no idea how to do that.

I did verify integrity and no change.

    No firewall popups.

    Here are my comp specs.
