Evolve visual glitch

My mate has purchased NS2 recently and whenever he evolves the big orange ball remains on his screen. See <a href="https://getsatisfaction.com/unknownworlds/topics/aliens_evolve_bug" target="_blank">https://getsatisfaction.com/unknownworlds/t...iens_evolve_bug</a>

We have tried a fair bit of trial-and-error such as different gfx drivers, windows updates, playing with the in-game settings and resolution, disable virus buster (lol) and we haven't had any luck.

So far we have found it happens when evolving to upgrades such as carapace etc. Think he evolved to gorge and it didn't happen. As far as we know nothing else is wrong with the game on either side.

No problems with any other games or any other part of ns2 (that we are aware of).

We have submitted a bug report but was wondering if anyone else experiences this and can offer any solutions?

specs: i5 2500k, gtx570, etc etc will give more once i leave work if required

    You can try verifying install on steam. It will check all your files and revert them to default, update, or replace any missing or modified files.

    steam library > NS2 properties > local files > verify integrity of game cache

    Sounds like missing externals of some kind. Is the menu still flash dependent or did they got rid of it?

    Flash is gone AFAIK, I think it is still used on computer console models in game? Easy way to test is to use r_flash false in the console :)

    What if you press the 'b' key (evolution key). That looks like the evolution ball. Maybe hitting b will reset it?

    Hate to say it but try deleting the game and reinstalling?

    Need the client log when this bug occurs.
    Please press the ~ key and then hit f12 to take a screenshot right when it happens.
    Or RIGHT after quitting the game, (dont run it again) check in your %appdata%/roaming/natural selection 2/ folder for log.txt and post it

    Don't you have errors before that, like when you load the game or when you join the server?

    Otherwise deleting everything and reinstalling might be a good idea.

    Just as something quick to try:

    go to the lua folder in NS2 in steam and delete these files: GUIAlienBuyMenu.lua, GUIManager.lua, Alien_Client.lua and Player.lua (or to be safe just move them into another folder or rename them to .old)
    Then verify the game cache and it should detect these files are no longer there and redownload them with the latest copies stored up on Steam. Seems like the script errors are being thrown by these files.

    Worth a shot and I hope it helps. You can also try going to %AppData%/Natural Selection 2 and removing the contents and try launching the game again. Should repopulate everything on launch.

    I don't think it's a corrupt file causing it. It happens like once per ten rounds. Shouldn't it <i>always</i> happen when there's a corrupt file?

    Bought the game today and ran into this bug every time I played as the Aliens.

    Verified the game cache and played two games as alien on one server and didn't get the bug. Not sure if it fixed it or if it was just a coincidence. I'm hoping it was the former.

    If it was corrupt yes, but it is possible on the off chance that someone might have had a copy of the file from a previous build which could cause something like this. Steam for whatever reason could have just skipped that file or given them a previous copy. Unlikely but plausible.

    Played a lot of games as Alien since verifying the game cache in Steam and it seems to have fixed the bug for me.

    I'd suggest trying it if you have the bug - post the result here so people can see if it works or not.

    That's not the cause; I've never installed the combat mod and I got the bug too.

    Was just pointed to the pre-order & beta today.
    Given the amount of fun I had in NS1, it was a no-brainer.

    First alien game, the ball after like the 2nd or 3rd time evolving. Very annoying. (still had a ton of fun though xD)

    So, for me this was a clean download, fresh from steam.

    Thanks everyone. We were able to reproduce the bug (click the evolve button while holding down the keyboard button to bring up the evolve menu). It will be fixed for 216.

    As a work around for 215, don't hold down the Evolve/Buy button. Just tap it once, the menu will remain open.
